I know Sublime and Rage Against the Machine were already mentioned, but it’s worth noting again. Most overrated “bands” EVER.
And Korn too. I just really hate wigger metal.

Unfortunately, you probably need to read some works by Heidegger or other existentialists to get the meaning of most of it.
The problem with this analysis is that not even Heidegger understands Heidegger.

Most of those lyrics aren’t really that complex at all. Freudian psychology was big in the 60’s, so the Oedipus Complex was a prevalent topic of discussion at the time. Hence the Mother I want to fuck you part. This part was originally just an improvised line that Morrison (far, far gone on acid) added during a performance and it stuck. The “blue bus” is either a reference to the blue buses that draftees were taken to basic training in or barbituates, being under the influence of which was referred to as “the blue bus”, “riding the blue bus”, and also “riding the snake”.
Once this info is known, the song is much easier to interpret. It’s about the end of something, love, life, an era in one’s life, etc. Morrison was known to use purposefully vague wording and phrases so that people could give several meanings to the lyrics and so that the lyrics could reach some universal level.
The song was originally just another sad love song, but because the Doors were playing the Whisky when they wrote the song, they had to lengthen it considerably in order to fill out their two-sets-a-night obligations. So Morrison added the Oedipal stuff, the drug references, the allegorical comparisons of moving west to riding a snake and so on. But the important thing to remember about Morrison and his lyrics is that, while he had an insanely high, genius-level IQ and clearly was able to translate this to his lyrics, he did a SHITLOAD of acid as well and many of their songs, especially earlier ones, developed live. So there are a lot of lyrics that are just the result of a mad genius spewing whatever stream-of-conscious, acid-fueled rhetoric may have popped into his head at the time.
Bieber…
Who the fuck buys this guys shit to fuel his media storm? really… heard in class today, some chick told me that he’s releasing a nail polish line? I just stared at her from across the desk with utter disgust. Got up and went to go eat. Just blew my mind into pure rhino shit!
Oh and LIL WAYNE!? i mean c’mon he cant even rap, has a terrible voice and relies on technology in studios to get his voice to even level! Music now days… least there’s always metal!!! (hell yeah!!)
The Beasty Boys.
Fuck the stupid white people that buy their music, so that it continues to pollute the air and my ears.

This is about a car accedent he saw as a kid that apparently stuck with him his whole life. It was apparently pretty horrific and he got a good look at some mangled dead native americans. He later claimed that somehow the spirit(s) of the indians imprinted on him. That’s kind of how I think of him now. Sort of this mystic indian shamen poet of rock. I don’t know if that is my favorite lyric, but it is what I always associate with him.
Yeah and he let it out on stage judging by his dancing, by the way ‘Live at the Hollywood Bowl’ is great if you havn’t seen and ‘The Doors’ movie with Val Kilmer is very good, I gotta see that again.
To people listing Bob Dylan, yeah he’s hardly a great vocalist and uses minimal musicality on his original stuff but all the covers of his songs prove he is one of the greatest writers of all time and under-rated if anythin IMO.
All along the watch tower - Hendrix
Knockin on heavens door - GnR’s
Mr Tambourine man - The Byrds
A hard rains gonna fall - Roxy music
A few that spring to mind.

I’d say all the cover versions indicate that there were a lot of way better musicians who heard Dylan’s music and said “hey, that song’s alright, but I can play it way better. Here’s how it SHOULD sound.” Bob Dylan is way overrated and the only reason most people even think of him as a “great” is because Rolling Stone has an article in every other issue extolling the virtues of a music collection with tons of Dylan in it.
Agreed, Dylan is not a great vocalist or musician, as I said previous, but as far as writing goes he cannot be over rated judging by the amount of hits he and other, better musicians have had with his work. Maybe he gets hyped up in the US and so considered over rated but I dont think he gets a great deal of exposure in the UK these days.
Dustin, Pink Floyd sucked tremendous ass even when I was getting high! Fuck that shit.
To me, both Biggie and Tupac were overrated. They both had some entertaining songs, but overall, annoying background noise.
Nas is another that is overrated to me. Same with 50. He is not all that, really.
Pearl Jam goes on my list.
I had to give it some thought, but I’ll have to agree that U2 needs to be on the list as well. Only 4-5 songs appeal to me.
For you UK kats, Robbie-FUCKING-Williams. He’s had a couple of decent songs, but he is not good. Not in the least. He was strange when he was with that band, and just got stranger since.
Lenny Kravitz is awesome. I don’t like American Woman, though. Irritating song.
For the hip-hop heads:
Young Jeezy, Mims, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne (at times), OJ da’ Juiceman, Trina, and a host of others fall into this category. There is NOTHING good that comes from them. They haven’t changed the face of anything. They haven’t done anything. I’ll add Scarface to this list as well. I’ll have to add more later.

Yup an IQ of 146 combined with a healthy appetite for drink and drugs thrown into a highly political era is gonna make for some ‘interesting’ material.

I quite like the beasty boys. Their music is just stupid and fun.
I wonder at any given Beasty Boys gig, how many people are there ironically? You know, the same way people go to see “The Room”.
Anyway, since they aren’t rated in the first place, they can’t be overrated.
Same goes for U2 who for a LONG time have been getting reviews like “moralistic, punch-rock drivel”.
If we were basing this thread on just “album sales not proportional to musical talent” then it would be packed to the brim with Akon, Britney Spears, N-Dubz, and Akon. Not The Doors (brilliant), Prince (insanely talented), The Beatles (brilliant) and Tupac (he was friends with Mike Tyson).

Oh man, out here in the States, everyone is on Dylan’s sack.
bob dylan is a great vocalist. Range, versatility, phrasing, inflection. You have to listen to more than just tambourine man to know that though. Rough voice, yes but really a technically good singer.
Not a great musician? Hes a multi-instrumentalist and he plays guitar and harmonica simultaneously. I really don’t understand these claims.
Obviously you dont have to like his stuff but I hereby declare your arguments to be spurious.

I believe that was during the period where he quit smoking for a couple of years.
Yeah, I’ve always loved that song since I was a kid.

It isn’t?? you do know he rapped over an 80’s song by bruce hornsby??? That cat was able to rap but he is overrated. abrupt death always gives musicians extreme legendary popularity. Kurt cobain,Jimmy Hendrix, Selena, Micheal Jackson(not overrated). I guess Thats just the way it is.
Lady GaGa and Bieber hands down. Maybe I’ll try to get a recording deal…
