Watched the first The Hills Have Eyes again last night on spike, my roomate told me that it was rated one of the worst horror movies of all time but I always thought that it was a pretty cool movie. The father fighting the huge mutant in that nuclear prop house was epic.
The pacifist with glasses ends up having to kill all those mutants with a fucking axe to save his baby, I don’t know how anyone can not get into that plot.
I usually avoid films with irritating titles named after a person, and I’m not a Clooney fan, but DAMN that film was good! Clooney was excellent, and the ending was such sweet revenge.
roybot wrote: Feast - low budget horror/ comedy with a simple premise: a group of strangers are thrown together when they are forced to take shelter in a bar from a pack of bloodthirsty creatures. Owes a debt to Evil Dead 2 and From Dusk Till Dawn. Worth watching if that’s your thing, but be warned - it’s inferior to both.
Felon- excellent prison drama focusing on Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff), a regular guy who gets locked up for killing an intruder outside his home. Alone, and struggling to cope with the politics of prison life, he seeks help from his cell-mate and prison celebrity John Smith (Val Kilmer).
Together, they forge an unlikely friendship, but the corrupt wardens pose an even bigger threat than the prisoners.
Dorff is good in the lead role, but this is Kilmer’s movie - it’s one of his best-ever performances. He should’ve received an Oscar nomination at least. Can’t recommend this enough.
Totally agree on Felon. This movie totally caught me by surprise. Val Kilmer seems to have been demoted to direct-to-DVD status (even though I’ve always been a big fan of his) and I’ve never been a fan of Dorff, so I wasn’t expecting much. I ended up really liking the movie. The funny thing is that someone else tried to recommend it to me recently as well for being a good flick to watch.
Funny, I was planning on renting Splinter this weekend. It also has Jill Wagner, who you may remember from the short-lived Blade TV show.
I’ve avoided Blade: The Series ever since I read that Michael Jai White auditioned for the role, but they still decided to hire Sticky Fingaz…
Jill Wagner is quite the hotty and turns in a decent performance, which is always good.
Splinter is definitely worth a look. It scores extra points for a nod to Evil Dead 2 and the decision to go with physical effects over CGI.
Thanks for the Splinter recommendation. I watched it last night. You were right, it definitely owed a lot to The Thing and it certainly had its Evil Dead 2 moments. Overall, I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to someone looking for a ‘older fashioned’ horror flick.

Yeah, his career does seem to have taken a nosedive in the last few years. I suppose some poor choices and a reputation for being difficult to work with haven’t helped.
Don’t know whether the rumors of his on-set rants are true, but at least he hasn’t got a ‘Balegate’ on his resume. That would be pretty embarrassing.

No problem. I’m glad you liked it. Maybe ‘relieved’ would be a more appropriate word: my taste in movies can sometimes be a bit iffy. But I thought this was a solid movie that didn’t get the publicity it deserved.
I wouldn’t go as far as sexy, but facehuggers are very useful for facepalming someone when your hands are occupied piloting a spaceship. That move is also known as as a ‘spacepalm’.

It was a nice Halloween rental. Plus, with it only being 82 minutes, it’s not like it runs excessively long and you feel like you wasted a lot of time watching it. Plus, it’s one of those types of films where you never really get a good look at the creature, so it allows you to leave more to your imagination.
It’s funny you mentioned Feast earlier. I’m one of those weird people that enjoyed the whole series. I think I might even liked the second one the best. There were just too many moments that had me laughing hysterically. The third one was a bit of a letdown though.

I hadn’t realized there were sequels. I’ll have to track 'em down. I did enjoy the first one, but I try not to be too enthusiastic about what I recommend. I once managed to offend a bus full of men by daring to suggest we watch Bubba Ho-Tep on the on-board DVD player.
Mind you, my dick was hanging out at the time (that last part was made up, btw).

Yeah, there were two sequels. The second takes place in a different town a bit later with a different cast (with the exception of Honey Pie), where the third is a direct sequel to the second (it literally starts from the final scene in Feast II). The third I think is barely an hour long as well.
Definitely not for everyone, but I thought the second one had some pretty great moments of hilarity.
While on the topic of scary movies, I finally watched Rosemary’s Baby on Halloween as well. I know this is supposed to be a classic horror film, but it did absolutely nothing for me. I didn’t find it remotely scary, or even all that interesting. It was just weird to me. Perhaps this is one of those movies where just too much time has passed and it no longer has the impact that it did when it was first out. Then again, with the exception of The Exorcist, religious-themed horror films have never really done anything for me.
About the only thing redeeming about it is to see that Mia Farrow was pretty cute when she was younger and her nude scenes.
