Money. Taboo?

Hell, I wouldn’t mind sharing if I was employed. If I can tell folks about my being broke, I can easily tell them when I’ve actually got some money.

I’m assuming most of the younger folks like myself feel the same way. You old farts and your strange social convention confuse the hell outta us.

Damn you, Neuromancer!!!

OK, my money MAY be counterfeit, but my “supplements” are the real deal, my friend :^)

6 inches (erect).
115 to 125 IQ (silly tests - nothing offical).
5’6" tall (add a few inches if I stand on my tippy toes).

I did it so you can feel better about yourself.

People who are confident in themselves have no reason to lie.

I’m in university, so I’m not working full-time right now. I do work part-time doing .NET programming though. To be honest I’m very proud of the amount of money I make for my age. My hourly rate is $70, but I find it impossible to make accurate quotes. It’s also hard to balance setting a price too high and not getting the job at all, or setting the price too low and missing out on money. On one job I ended up making more around $20/hour, because I drastically underestimated the time. But on the opposite extreme, I made $1200 last weekend in about 6 hours work. When you can re-use your old code, you are golden.

Actually right now I am very unmotivated to do school work and came really close to dropping out this semester. I basically hate everything I’m learning, and I would do programming full time in an instant if I could get a non-freelance job without a degree.

You sound like someone with very little life experience. The more you have, the more people want to take it from you, especially if you flaunt it. In a competitive sense, if you work at a job getting paid differently than someone else in a similar position, you don’t think that will cause some animosity if you openly discuss it?

Of course this wouldn’t be a concern at all to someone who doesn’t actually have shit.

I am wondering why that needs to be explained at all or if you think the world is such a rosy place that you can walk around exclaiming your wonderful yearly income to anyone who will listen and never experience any negatives as a result.

The fact that you related this to “age” speaks volumes about how in the dark you really are.

I personally never thought that way. But then, I was never clueless enough to think people with more experience who happen to be even mildly successful are somehow doing it wrong when they speak on their actions.

I don’t make much money but I own my own nice ‘middle class’ home, have two kids and an '99 Dodge Caravan. I have no debts.

I prefer my current low stress, low paying job to my previous much higher stress, great cash job. It was a conscious decision to go this route and I find I’m a much happier person for it.

I’m much more comfortable with a fairly frugal lifestyle and the time to enjoy it. My priorities have changed as I’ve aged. Everyone will choose a different path for themselves and it may or may not require cash.

If I do, at some point require an infusion of money, I’m considering being a part time assassin. I hear that pays well.

Glad to see you’ve done your market research. In today’s tough economic assassin climate,it’s imperative to have the correct skill set in order to edge out the competition in the hunt for those lucrative contracts.

There are no negatives in our current situation. None of us here at T-Mag are going to take your job, or dislike you because you make more money than us.

If you’re sitting in a room full of dentists, that’s one thing, but if you’re with your friends or family or someone not in your profession, there’s no reason to be so guarded. What are they going to take from you?

People don’t tell others what they make because they are either ashamed of how little it is, or feel superior and pity those who make less than they do. It’s your compunction, not mine. If you were so concerned about causing animosity you wouldn’t say half the things you do here, X.

Some people are so worried about protecting their little scrap of land that they forget it’s not always under attack.

One can try to justify why money is such an issue, but it’s often not more than a silly social more, like in this situation.

Gotchya!

It really doesn’t matter what you make. What matters is your debt to income ratio. Some poor fuck making 30,000 per/year can be better off than you if they don’t have any rent or cc payments.[/quote]

Very true. I earn probably 10 percent of what I used to living in London but my quality of life is better because everything is so much cheaper.

In London I lived in a rented apartment and travelled by public transport.

Here in Mexico I have bought an apartment, have some land in one of the best estates in the city on which I am planning to build a house next year and I have a car and an SUV.
