Modi's Raw Powerlifting Log

Since I’m competing on Friday, we are going to stick around all weekend, eat and drink a lot, and try to catch some of the Pro Strongman events on Saturday.

Some of the BIG names competing:

Mikhail Koklyaev
Travis Ortmayer
Dave Ostlund
Phil Phister
Derek Poundstone
Zydrunas Savickas
Brian Siders
Mark Felix

Saturday’s events include The Circus Dumbell which will be 228lbs this year, up from 202lbs last year. The Manhood Stones (452lbs and 533lbs), as many reps as possible in 60 seconds over a 49" high bar. Any rep with 533lbs will beat all reps with 452lbs. And the Timber Carry (farmer’s walk) will be 1003lbs (up from 875lbs last year) up a 32 foot inclined ramp as fast as possible.

Good luck, Modi. Hit it hard and enjoy the weekend.

Cant wait to hear the results man, good luck!

Thanks guys, I’ll give it everything I have on Friday.

The meet didn’t go as well as planned. The judging was pretty strict for some. My bench just didn’t have any pop off the chest. DL felt pretty good.

Squat:
524 miss on depth
524 pass
562 miss on depth

Bench:
364 pass
386 miss
386 miss

Deadlift:
584 pass
628 pass (PR +5lbs)
633 miss

Total:
1516lbs

Video:

Sorry to see that it didn’t go as planned. The PR pull was a damn good fight. I hope you were able to enjoy the experience, and see some cool stuff while you were there.

Yeah, it was a good time. The whole thing is a freak show/circus/zoo all combined in one. 18,000 athletes and 200,000 spectators is a sight to behold. I’ve never seen so many people trying to fight for free supplements at an expo before.

I got to see the Pro Strongman, and the DL events on Saturday. Ate and drank at some great places. Just wasn’t my weekend.

Here’s me trying to get away with a high squat…Can’t sneak anything by them judges.

It didnt go as planned, but to come back from an injury like you did, and compete with only a few months training is pretty damn impressive in my book.

Do you think you could have made the 562 squat if you were able to hit depth? It didnt look to hard, I certainly think you could have done it.

Considering your injury and the stomach bug, snagging the DL PR is pretty nice. What’s the plan for the future?

It was great meeting you, Modi. You will do better next time and like BlackLabel and MorphingMatt said you did well coming off of an injury. I hope to see you in Denver for Raw Nationals.

I’m not sure what that means.

Thanks. I’m going to keep working on mobility to stay as injury free as possible, get a lot stronger before the next meet, maybe explore some other federations.

Definitely good meeting you as well. I’m not sure I’ll be there for Nationals. I have a friend that I’m going to try to break into PL’ing, so I might look for a local/state meet to get him into the sport.

I think I’ll probably have to switch back to high bar Squats for the future, and if I can get 100% injury free, I’ll probably give Smolov another run with the high bar position, and really work on burying my Squats.

Good luck with your training and hopefully our paths will cross again some time in the not so distant future.

Thanks, you too. I’m sure they will.

03/09/10 - Bench

A) Bench Press
…225x5
275x8x5

B) Rope Pushdown
80x10x3

Just getting back into it.

03/13/03 - Shoulders

A) Seated Shoulder Press
barx12
95x10
135x8
185x8x4

B1) Upright Rows w/EZ Bar
+50x12
+90x12x3

B2) Side Delt Plate Raise
25x10
25x10x3

C) Front Delt Plate Raise
45x20x3

I didn’t see anyone at the Arnold pressing big weights with small shoulders.

Looking back at my training log, I realized just how many shoulder workouts I missed during the last training cycle. My schedule has been a lot busier with travel and appointments, and somehow I kept making an excuse for missing this training day.

I know how important my shoudlers are to my pressing, so I am going to make them a priority. Even if I’m traveling, I’ll find a way to add shoulders into another training day.

Upright rows usually wreak havoc on my right shoulder, so I did them with an EZ bar and kept it light, and only pulled to my sternum. I have to monitor these closely. I really wish I had a set of DB’s in my basement. I feel like I would benefit from some DB shoulder work as well.

Modi,

I just want to say that you got robbed with those squats… especially the 562… Sorry, man, that sucks.

As to breakign in a new lifter, there are a bunch of meets in New England in other feds this year. I know the APA has 2 in MA, 2 in ME, 3 in VT and at least 2 in CT all this year, and a large majority of the lifters compete raw and is very novice friendly (I know because I competed in my first two with them in the last 6 months).

Thanks, that’s good to know. I’ll look into it.
