Alright, it’s official. I just sent in my registration for the 2009 USAPL Raw Nationals. They are being held on July 25-27 in Charlottesville, VA.

Awesome, just enough time to run Smolov 1 more time!
I really think you are going to be coming into your own by then (of course I think you are doing that right now).

That’s really not even funny. That’s like kicking someone’s dog or something. Smolov 1 more time…
No, I need to focus on my Bench and DL for a little while leading up to the meet. I’ll probably basterdize Sheiko for a little while, haven’t really decided yet.

Just run Smolov for Squat, Bench and Deadlift all at once. Or if that’s too much then just run the Jr. Smolov for Deadlifts.

Probably more like lighting someone’s dog on fire. I was thinking a person probably couldn’t run Smolov more often than once every year or two. But you I believe are a super hero.

To do Smolov once a year or even two you’d have to have the memory of a fish!
I think once in a lifetime, maybe twice would be enough. I don’t know if I could do it being the injury bug that I am.

Is usapl the fed that the westside guys lift in? Or the one that Coan lifted in? I get them confused.
I actually try not to keep up with who competes where, and the politics that go into it, so out of complete ignorance, this is the best I can do.
Ed Coan competed in USAPL/IPF then switched to USPF.
Westside competed in APF/WPO and the switched to the IPA.
I don’t know what happened, if I did know, I forgot. I’m sure there are some good stories, but I’m the wrong one to ask.
However, USAPL and WPO are on the opposite end of the spectrum.
USAPL is Single Ply or Raw, does not allow briefs or a Mono Rack, and is drug tested.
Whereas WPO was Multiply, allowed briefs, canvas/poly/whatever, used a Mono Rack and did not drug test.[/quote]
If I’ve seen the video’s of WPO then they seem very liberal to me. I’m not trying to start a huge controversy and don’t think your thread attracts those types, but some of the folks who allow mono racks seem to allow a lot of strange things…imo. To each his own, but I’ve seen videos with hands on lifters, hands on weights when spotting and what seemed to me like high lifts, and no pauses and benches and such.
I personally would rather have much stricter rules. Just my opinion and I do respect the strength of all those guys who lift in the more loose feds…just not for me.

Yep, enough said. They are crazy strong, and putting 1000lbs on you back on in your hands is a feat in itself. Each fed has it’s own rules, and judging standards, and if you don’t like the one you are in, then there are plenty more to choose from.
USAPL is strict, but pretty consistent, so you know what to expect.
Good news is that I finished the workout, and I actually felt strong.
Bad news is that I haven’t been fighting allergies for the past 2+ weeks. It turns out that I’ve had a lower respiratory infection and am now on antibiotics. I have been waking up once or twice an hour all night every night this week coughing and hacking. Officially, I am not supposed to lift for the next week to 10 days. Unofficially, I will be lifting for the next week to 10 days.
It’s a shitty plan, and I’d tell anyone reading this that you are stupid to train while this sick, and that you get what you deserve. With that said, I am too damned close to finishing this cycle to stop now. My plan is to sleep as much as possible, take my meds, and finish strong. I will only Squat and foam roll next week, no accessory work. I’m not looking for sympathy or a pat on the back. I’m just telling it like it is.
I was feeling sorry for myself during the second set and made it look worse than it was.
Nice job brotha! Man I would say great job for not being a pansy and fighting through the infection…but you now you will have even LESS of an excuse if you are not killing in your training when you are 100%!
You are completely destroying your chance to make shitty excuses for why you can’t train and make PR’s!
Yeah…I would say great job and keep doing the inspirational job you do…
But now I just shake my head at you in shame for taking the road less traveled…
Keep it up…Dummy
BTW i will be hitting you up about the PL meet really soon, I am going to need so advice!
Wow! I have been following your thread, and I must say, “great job”. You have turned your squat into possibly your best lift. There is no way that I could squat that frequently with that volume and intensity. Do you intend to follow these types of russian cycles as your base training from this point forward?

Oh, I’m pretty sure I can come up with some shitty excuses if I try.
I’d be glad to help you with the PL meet. Feel free to ask any questions along the way.
I just decided one day that I was ready to compete, so I decided to go an watch a meet. I contacted the meed director and told him I’d like to come down and observe. The next day I called him back and told him I wanted to come down and compete, and the rest is history.

Thanks Stl Ram. I would have said the same thing about the volume and frequency before trying Sheiko, but I tolerated it very well, which is why I decided to give Smolov a try.
Smolov is a very unbalanced program, and it would be difficult to follow something like this year round, because your other lifts would suffer. I’m sure I will do it again in the future, but maybe only the Base, since it’s only 3 weeks plus a testing week, and I think I like the structure of the Base a little better.
As far as Squat being my best lift, I think you may be right. However, I’m hoping that the added strength will have some carryover to my DL. I will be focusing on that leading up to the meet, and maintaining my Squat. It’s funny, my Bench was always my best lift, probably because even when I lost focus on lifting for a few years, I never missed a Chest day (like the rest of America). And now it’s become my nemisis. Maybe someday I will figure that lift out as well.
