I almost didn’t Squat today. My warmups felt fine, but on my first working set I felt something in my right knee. It felt like something was out of place. I kept trying to readjust my stance, and even tried to stomp out the pain. I decided to finish the first set and see what happened. Everything felt fine on the next three sets, so I’m glad I didn’t quit. It was a strange sensation, can’t really explain it.
I’m sure I have some inflammation building in my joints. I haven’t been taking any fish oil for a while, so I am going to add that back into my diet. In the mean time, ice and Advil will be my best friend.
I Squatted high bar today, to give my left elbow a chance to heal up. It felt fine until I got up to 265 in Bench, and again at 295. I think I will save Benching for my off days, and not push it, just focus on the Squat.

Would a 4 in. cambered bar help?
That’s a good idea, I’ve thought about it…I have a Safety Squat Bar if I need it, but my max is probably 50lbs less, so I’d have to readjust the numbers. I’ll take it one day at a time for now.

Yeah I saw the SSB in the background. The 4 in. cambered bar probably wouldn’t do much to your max at all and would probably be easier on the elbow. Might be something to think about in the future. Have you tried elbow sleeves when squatting?

I’m actually wearing sleeves in the video, the only time I don’t wear them is in a meet. This isn’t a tendinitis thing going on like I’ve had in the past. It feels like a ton of pressure inside the joint, and once it’s aggravated it feels very weak.

Damn, well sure hope you can get to the bottom of it soon
Dare I say that today felt easy. I have moved to a high bar position to let my elbow heal up. It feels like there’s some decent swelling in the joing when it’s fully flexed, but otherwise there is no pain.
420 felt like nothing coming out of the racks, and that is usually a good sign. I rushed the last set a little because I was feeling so good, so the last couple reps were more challenging than the rest of the workout. Elbow felt good throughout the session, and my low back pain is gone. I just felt a good fatigue by the end, no sharp pains. My knee felt 100% today.
I did some light pulldowns afterwards, I felt these a little in my left elbow when the bar touched my chest, so I just stopped about 2" short on all the reps and they felt good.
I will probably do some high board presses tomorrow to see if those feel ok.
Great Squatting today. These should have been harder than they were.

My elbow felt fine with the Manpon Press. This is about the same as a 4 board, but it compresses down closer to a 3 board when the bar is resting on it. These weren’t too hard, I’m just trying not to lose anything while my elbow heals up.
I’ll probably drop down to a 3 board next time, then a 2 board…

I definitely like the Sheiko programming, but I also may need to figure a way to get some 95% lifts in there without screwing up the cycle. I’ll probably shoot Dave Bates an e-mail and see what his thoughts are.

Hey modi, good stuff in your log as always.
Was wondering if you had found any info on incorporating some heavier lifts into Sheiko. My training will be coming back to Sheiko in the near future, and I’m very interested in working in some near max reps without borking the whole program.

I’ve thought about that as well. I had planned on contacting Dave Bates again(he wrote the 13 week beginner cycle) before starting my next Sheiko Cycle. You may want to check out BMF Sports and post the same question over there. Dave and Eric Talmant both answer questions regarding Sheiko. Someone may have alread asked that.

Good to see you were not too “impaired” to get that workout in

Thanks man. I’m still being pretty cautious. Nothing hurt at all today, but I’m making Squats top priority. I have a feeling that if 5x7 tomorrow or 3x10 on Friday are difficult, I’ll drop down to a low bar position, and find out very quickly how my elbow is doing. I can deal with the pain on Squats, since it’s just pain. But when it comest to Benching, it’s the pain and weakness that prevents me from doing it.

Blah, blah, blah. Ice, Advil, Man Up.
I have a issue with my left arm and the pain radiates down to my elbow. If I carry too much weight too low, it is VERY uncomfortable. I have left after performing squats many sessions lately, but my next meet isn’t till October and I just need to hit 165kg to be “ok” with that. Mid 170’s would be better, but my priority is my squat right now, so my bench will suffer.
And what’s up with that defending of crossfit? Lmao.

I just like to stir the pot every once in a while. My real strength is in getting threads to go off topic, but every once in a while I try to throw up something relevant.
03/19/09 - Smolov Squat Base Meso Cycle Week 2 Day 3
A) Squat (low bar)
barx10
135x8
225x5
315x3
365x1
405x1 450x5x7 (PR +5lbs) or (PR +20lbs for set/rep)
I don’t think the glute bridges were a good idea yesterday. I was really working on getting a solid glute contraction, but my low back had some fatigue going into it today.
I warmed up with a high bar position. 405 felt a little heavy coming out of the racks. I started the first set of 450 with a high bar position, but let it roll down to a somewhat low bar half way through the set. I did the rest with a low bar position because I’m stronger that way. I felt my elbow a little on the last two sets, but nothing unbearable.
My 5RM was 445x5 going into today, so I broke that by 5lbs, and then hit an extra 6 sets with it. This is 20lbs over last week.
Felt good, but next time I’ll go into it with a fresh low back.
03/20/09 - Smolov Squat Base Meso Cycle Week 2 Day 4
A) Squat
barx10
135x8
225x5
315x3
365x1
425x1 475x3x10 (85% +20lbs) (PR +10lbs) (PR +20lbs for set/rep)
My previous 3RM was 465x3, so I hit a 10lb PR today, plus an additional 9 sets. This was 20lbs heavier than last week.
However, I was definitely feeling the effects of yestedays 450x5x7. I am pretty beat up today. My low back was still tired, my right groin didn’t want to loosen up, and my left elbow hurt from the last warmup all the way through the last set.
This was a test of will power today. Not so much the weight of the Squats, but the build up of fatigue and fighting the nagging injuries.
