Modern Monetary Theory: A Primer

I don’t know yet. No plans have been made yet, they just know they’re going to that country in the summer of '24. Someone said they are going to try to avoid only visiting touristy sites.

Good to know. Was this expensive? Similar to US prices or no?

Hey, it makes for a fun story.

I’m the other kind of Indian but I’m sure being American will quickly be obvious.

I like that idea. My girlfriend went on some missions trips to El Salvador when she was in high school and wants our kids to do stuff like that, for basically the same reason you’d want your son to go to India. I work with a lot of Mexicans and hearing their stories always remind me how cushy my life really is.

I have zero specifics about the trip and probably won’t for a while still, but I appreciate the detailed response.

Sure thing … makes me happy you’re taking advantage of the opportunity to visit a completely foreign land like India. It’ll be an interesting and enriching experience I’m sure.

Tangentially related - if your school has an outdoor recreation club/service you can usually go on neat trips for next to nothing. A bunch of my friends went and I was going to go on a yurt camping and ice climbing trip, but tore my MCL in Judo two weeks before.

I also recommend looking into NOLS (national outdoor leadership school) for interesting adventure. You can get student loans to cover the trip (think like a summer in Alaskan mountains or fixing trails in the Rockies). No easier time to go than college.

I let my dad talk me out of spending a summer in Alaska learning outdoor skills because it would have been another 5 grand in school loans. Looking back and the debt I ended up with I should have gone as it wouldn’t have made much difference to my repayment

Small South Dakota towns don’t have these, haha. Actually, they don’t have much of anything…

I’ll definitely look into this. It sounds pretty cool.

I kinda messed this up by having a kid as a sophomore, haha, but can still sometimes make things work. My girlfriend is very cool regarding things like this.

Definitely makes it harder. Family first

So they thought it was a good thing to vote to let their jobs go overseas or Mexico, because of their shortsightedness and greed?

Any proof of what you say?

Were these the union leaders or the rank and file?

No. They just didn’t think the industry was going anywhere. Like, how could it? It is giant steel mills that span miles! I remember these guys sitting around my kitchen table saying it, telling my dad he was full of shit, because he was telling them “For every dollar you make you better save fifty cents, cuz you’re going to need it.”.

But what they didn’t realize was that by striking for more money and better benefits, they had far surpassed the point at which it could be produced elsewhere for less (comparative advantage).

These were the guys that were the really typical story of high school drop outs who started out at $17-$20/hr. Thats in 1970’s dollars, plus benefits, etc.

Unskilled labor can always be replaced for cheaper or by automation.

No one is ever irreplaceable in a job, but one can make it a lot harder to do so.

Translation: I can’t admit the truth because it’s so scary.

Worked traditional jobs all my life. So this is obviously false.

What I’ve been saying is that we can do better and that this system is rigged.

Bartending =/= creating real hard goods.
You trade currency. That is quite literally gambling for a living.

Every system is rigged because every system aims to produce a certain outcome.

Oh, I forgot bartending was the only line of work I’ve ever done. Thanks for letting me know. Trading currencies would be gambling if you did it, because you’re ignorant.

And what outcome is this system rigged to produce? Concentration of money and power into the hands of a few. Awesome system we got here.

Name a society/system in history where this hasn’t been true

It’s gambling when anyone does it. It’s just dressed up as following data and hoping a trend does/doesn’t continue depending on how you bet.

Have you ever created a hard good?

So this makes it good? So why should we bother to change it?

So do they not follow and collect data? So it’s the same as playing the lottery?

I’ve done road construction and plenty of other things.

Man, I would love for you to go into a bar and tell the bartender that they are a societal waste as their service isn’t producing any hard goods. Then I’d like to see you get another drink.

Gawd, what an insufferable jerkoff you are.

This is putting words in my mouth.
But, IMO alcohol causes a ton of problems that burden society. It also contributes heavily to the obesity pandemic. I am not for prohibition, but let’s not pretend alcohol isn’t problematic.

No, what I am saying is humans are and always have been greedy as fuck.

Pot meet kettle.

It was YOU who emphasized hard goods. As if that was it.

Like garbage Frankenfoods.

So just accept it, instead of trying to mitigate this issue for the betterment of society as a whole? Wow, what a T-man.

And just like these foods alcohol consumption is a choice. The only difference is nobody gets to fucked up to drive after imbibing food. That’s where the line is - when one’s decisions can have potentially fatal impacts on someone else. Shit food only impacts the individual consuming it. Drunk drivers kill people regularly.

First, this phrase has no meaning as you are the only one I have ever heard use it. Secondly, you keep insulting me because you have no real argument. It’s called an ad hominem attack and is a logical fallacy - look it up and educate yourself. No way you would speak to someone this way in real life. If you do, then all the shit you bitched about like getting fired from serving alcohol to country club snobs makes perfect fucking sense.

Humans are greedy by nature and if you want the government to do everything for you that is the ultimate in laziness and greed (give me free shit simply because I exist).

The clown will never give a direct answer to any question asked

Yeah, kinda like those greedy corporations that make billions in profit and want more.

Where do you think people get the idea of asking their doctor for a specific medication? Advertising. And I believe the U.S. is one of the only countries who allow pharma companies to advertise their garbage drugs directly to consumers. If it wasn’t for the advertising then the sales of meds would fall. Less profit. Oh you say, the doctors would prescribe it any way. Then, why do pharma companies spend so much on advertising? Cause it doesn’t work. Just like prostitute politicians accept bribes(campaign contributions), they can just say no. It’s a choice. What does the evidence tell you? So keep your head in the sand and pretend advertising and other decisions aren’t made to make more profits no matter the cost. Because some people escape and they don’t get everyone, it’s simply a choice.

Directly this is true. If someone contracts a disease because of this garbage food, do you think that person is the only one affected? What about the family, the cost in “healthcare” to name a few?

If I “insult” you, it’s because you believe so much in your incredibly weak arguments. You don’t examine what it is you are saying and come across as a brainwashed dumbass.

And this is coming from the clown who if he doesn’t like your answer he pretends that you don’t answer.

You believe in the democratic process yes? Let’s take a poll here:
Who is the brainwashed dumbass: me or castolli?
