They are going to have a horrendous time selling that house when the time comes.
I think this arrangement can work, but just because it can doesn’t mean it should. Both parents need to move on with their lives. That can be done and the burden on the children can be minimized, it doesn’t have to be either/or.

This arrangement will never work. If you created a species who are incapable of emotion maybe, but this will not end well.
