Jits,
Thanks for posting.

How do you find the energy to roll 3 times AND lift on Mondays and Wednesdays? I am reading that correctly, right?

Do you do any submission grappling tourneys?

Djwlfpack.

Monday, tuesday and Wednesday actually.
The two sessions from 10-15 are on a technical basis, so we dont spar at all.
Usually we drill one or two things at each session, making sure it sticks.

So the energy expenditure really isn’t that high.
The third session and the following s&c workout to tax alot though, but I guess my work capacity is good because I really don’t get all that worn out.

Other than that I just eat healthy and get alot of quality sleep.

yes I have been compeeting a bit, I am actually preparing for at Bjj Cup in february at the moment.

My current routine is usually like this:

Sunday:
A.M: Upper body pressing (bench press, military, ect.)
P.M: Probably nothing, maybe some mobility work if I’m bored
Monday:
A.M. Conditioning (Running usually)
P.M.: Boxing
Tuesday:
A.M.: Lower body pressing (squats, front squats) +power clean and presses
P.M.: Boxing
Wensday:
A.M.: Conditioning
P.M.: Boxing, grip work
Thursday:
A.M.: Lower body pulling (dealifts) + shrugs + “Core” work (minimal)
P.M.: Boxing
Friday:
A.M.: Conditioning
P.M. Boxing
Saturday:
P.M. Upper body pull (chinups, pullups, rows)
OPTIONAL: Mobility work and/or active recovery

It seems like a lot of volume, but I seem to be recovering decently right now.

A little late getting to this party, but good job and great attitude!

Monday, Nov 2.

MT:
Great class, which was kind of ironic 'cause I wasn’t feeling jazzed like I usually am. It was one of those days where I struggled to get out the door on time only to get bogged down in a ton of stupid traffic. On days like that it’s easy to start asking myself why I’m doing this?

Anyhow, we spent about 15 minutes drilling slips and counters, then put it to practice sparring. Changed partners every round and everyone had to spar one round with one of the school’s more experienced fighters. Every time someone came out of the ring they’d say stuff like, 'Watch out, he’s not pulling his punches and his knees are brutal." Hm. He mostly let me play defense. Fine, but my goal is that some day he won’t get a choice. (Hey, I can dream!)

I actually got a nice compliment, too. I was getting ready to leave when one of the more advanced guys (who seldom spars with me, but did today) said I’ve improved a lot. I thought maybe he was just being “nice” so I asked him what he thought I was doing better. He said, “Everything!” Wow!

Then he went on to say he wasn’t giving me any slack and I caught him fair and square more than once. Man, that made MY day and kinda made up for all the other stupid mistakes I made! (And the crummy commute!)

Thing is, I’ve sort of been feeling like I’m getting a little better, but I’m still such a rookie that I think I gauge my progress based on how class feels on any given day. I don’t really think that’s a good way to measure progress, but I fall into the trap just the same. So on days when I’m a total moron I feel like I haven’t improved at all and on days when I’m on top of my game I feel like I’m actually getting somewhere. Nice to have some validation for a change.

Tuesday, Nov 4th

BJJ:
Worked on side mount defense and escapes … specifically, rolling to the diagonal, curling into a semi-fetal position and guarding the neck/head. Covered the head-grabbers, arm-grabbers, back-takers and the roll-overs. A lot of this stuff is subtle, but it makes a big difference in your options and outcomes.

Wed, Nov 5th

MT:
Partnered up and practiced taking and deflecting punches to the head and body. Then worked (more) on slips, counters and kicks. Did several rounds of sparring with different partners to try to put things into practice.

BJJ:
Worked on some frigging arm bar that I’m not in a million years anywhere near ready to use. Way over my skill level and pretty much everyone else’s, too. That annoyed me. Rolled a bit. Got really stuck and my partner wouldn’t tap or back off in spite of my saying (several times) “Hey, this isn’t working. Let’s start over from the top.” So I was forced to hurt her. That sucked. shrug

I’m seeing a huge difference in how my Tues/Friday/Sat. class is taught (95% technique and rolling is offered after class if you want to hang around) and how the Wed class is taught. The Wed. class lesson is random … never know what it’s going to be or where it fits into the bigger picture. The main focus seems to be on rolling, but most of the students are white belts, which begs the question why? I dunno. I don’t see me getting much out of it right now, but I stay for the class because it follows the Muay Thai class and I’m there anyway. We’ll see.

Friday, Nov 7th.

BJJ:
Butterfly guard. Worked on four different ways to sweep. Again, looked at the more subtle adjustments and counters to help deal with head-grabbers and blockers.

Sat, Nov 8th:

BJJ:
Crap. Really sore back today. REALLy sore. That should learn me not to try to use brute strength during sweeps! Took my time getting up and about and decided to hit today’s BJJ class anyhow. Figured I could always just audit if I couldn’t participate. Turns out I was 85% better after moving around for a few hours, so I did take part in class, which was mostly a review of the last week’s lessons. Awesome!

This is just my MA log. For lifting/cardio, etc, see my training log on the Over 35 Forum.

Good job on your MT improvements, Cappy! That must have felt really good to hear.

And it may sound weird to say it, but you did the right thing hurting that girl. That is why we tap, so we don’t get hurt. Maybe next time she’ll use more sense.

Yanno, it was. And I’m not one who seeks compliments or praise. But it did make me think, and has helped me lighten up (a little) on myself.

Yeah. What should (maybe) cause me to pause is that I don’t have any issue with having gone there. Here’s the thing: She was causing (me) a certain amount of discomfort and frustration. I tried (several times) to rectify the situation, but to no avail, so I bumped it to the next level. I didn’t/don’t feel the least bit of remorse about that.

Cappy

Good, because you were right.

So, anyhoo, I was so cranky today I expected people to ask me when I was releasing the flying monkeys. My friend Jeff reminded me I haven’t worked out since, what, monday? Aha…

I skipped krav this week to take care of my husband, who was down with a bug, & missed again today because I had to work. So, off to the gym with me tonight, for my first workout on the free weights since my shoulder healed (I’ve been working the cable machines, easing into it per my PT)

I am much weaker now!

So, I did:

pull ups & chin ups (could only do 2 each!)
squats
overhead squats
deadlifts
Romanian deadlifts
overhead press (are you supposed to say overhead?)
dips
rows
mountainclimbers on a Swiss ball

I’m human again, thank heaven.

Okay, lets try this again…

Tonight I started with 45 minutes of bag class, which is a cardio class of all heavy bag work with lots of fatigue drills mixed in. Its an hour long ass whipping, but I skipped out 15 minutes early to jump into the level 2/3 class that was just beginning.

We worked combinations on the focus mitts ending with round kicks, and then combos that started with bob & weave. After that it was on to side kicks & spinning side kicks. My partner warned me that he wasn’t flexible enough to kick high, and proved it by almost taking out my knee with a side kick, so I made him kick the heavy bag after that instead of me. I am bossy.

His spinning side kicks were so high, however, that I had to remind him not to kick me in the face. So he’s pretty new & lacks control, but he took to those spinning kicks like a fish to water.

Well, Djwlfpack was asking me who is this Gorgeous Bastard guy I’m always training with, so here’s a picture of us with Miss C, my partner during private lessons with GB. I am the fashion police.

Kenpo
Time: 60 min.
Notes: Worked on a couple of different takedowns and then ran through different strikes you can throw once you get your opponent down. Fun class, but light on conditioning again. I’m thinking I may need to just go ahead and do cardio earlier in the day.

well currently I’m leaning more towards Muay Thai with my training right now.I only lift heavy 2 days a week(full body, compound lifts) because I also do MMA condtioning classes throughout the week:

Mon:roadwork/conditioning(morning),Muay Thai(evening)

Tues:running(morning),lift(evening)…
hottub/sauna

Wed:roadwork/conditioning(morning),Muay Thai(evening)

Thur:sprint conditioning

Fri:light conditioning(morning),Muay Thai(evening)

Sat: lift…sauna,

Sun: REST

currently 6’3"…285lbs…Goal of 260lbs.[/quote]

Muay Thai, is more my strength ,

I compete at 205 though.

Monday, tuesday evening Muay thai and BJJ classes conditioning, technique and sparring strategy.

Friday evening Muay Thai full sparring, MMA full sparring.

Thurs morning purely power lifts.
Monday-Wednesday morning, speed and facilitative lifts.
Thursday and Saturday mornings technique conditioning drills, 3 9min rounds 1 minute break.

Sunday nothing,

But I haven’t been able to do this for 8 months, I had a bicep cut off the bone reattached, a shifted atlas to fall catscan for a license so during the time to realign my spine I had my knee scoped which turned into reconstruction.

I am cleared to start back the 17th, very excited, I will post how the reintroduction to training goes.

I would really like to jump back full steam, but I guess that isn’t the best idea.

Yikes apbt55! Be careful!

Judo tonight
90 min.
30 min. warmup.
Then we did about 20 min. of grip fighting.
From there we went in to follow up throws from the grip fighting for the rest of class.

I haven’t posted here in a while…thanks,apt55 ;). My training has changed just a tad. I’m going to school fulltime right now…and I’m married. Stress is my biggest enemy…lol. I’ve been battling sinus infections for the past couple weeks as well:

Mon:shadowboxing,jump rope,strength training(all done in afternoon)

Tues:core strength/HIIT(morning),Muay Thai(evening)…

Wed:shadowboxing and body weight conditioning

Thur:shadowboxing,strength training(morning),Muay Thai(evening)

Fri:core strength/HIIT(morning),No-Gi(open mat)

Sat: Muay Thai sparring…and finish with either more rolling or heavy bag “Intervals”

Sun: REST

Still using the sauna on occasion…and lots of flexibility work,A.R.T.,foamroller,etc. Been having lots of discomfort in my lower back…found out its due to my left hip being a quarter of an inch higher than my right. I just have a slight discomfort as of now…nothing that hinders training. All of the A.R.T./foam roller work has alleviated most of the discomfort.

Anyways,I’m only lifting twice a week. Mondays consisting of fullbody compound lifts…and couple accessory/isolation lifts…with 3x6 scheme. Thursday consists of just deadlifts and push press with 5x3 scheme. I perform weighted core strength twice a week…and non-weighted core work with bodyweight conditioning and with warming up. Neck strength is done on my strength training days…we also finish every Muay Thai class with clench work.

Considering just preparing for actual MMA fights since straight amateur muay thai is hard to come by…we shall see. Focusing on conditioning and dropping weight before the spring.

Kenpo
Time: 70 min.
Notes: I liked this class. More conditioning than the last couple of classes. We worked a lot of kicks today, which was both good and bad. Good because I need the practice and bad because my hip flexibility sucks right now. We did some roundhouse, hook kicks and finished with some leg kicks.

Muay Thai class tonight:

Spent most of class instructing newer students.
Worked clinch and elbow techniques with my instructor…class was interrupted by a kid needing medical attention for his 3 year old sister next door…she wasn’t breathing…all was well eventually.

Worked 5 rounds of hard heavy bag training and stretching after that situation. My instructor is trying to work out something with Saekson Janjira to get in on their smokers…which will be fucking awesome IMO. I hope it comes together.

I’m also excited about our military students competing in Ft.Hood Combatives Tournament this weekend. I know they will do awesome things.

BJJ 90 min.
Went and trained at a friends BJJ studio.
Warmup was strong man medley for 30 min.

After that we worked on trainsition from the half guard,
and if they post out during the transition.

Then we rolled for about 30 min.

I had the chance to work on a move that I saw in a flavio canto video last night as well. It was really sweet, I fell into the pin, and I quickly remembered the move. I bridged, grab the guys belt and flipped him. I was shocked at how easy the effort was.

Had a private lesson last night with the owner of the school, working on teaching. He had me talk through headlock from the side, one of our more complicated level 1 techniques. I was only allowed to describe it verbally, using no gestures of any kind. They are very particular about how techniques are presented.

Not only must I be able to perform each technique to perfection against a larger & stronger opponent, but they don’t want any verbal shortcuts. So its not “move in like this”, its “move in at a 45 degree angle”. I like this pickyness, its helping me grow. Then he attacked me, slowly and continuously. Even though it was slow, by the end of it my head was swimming. But it was good, though, he said I was improving in “leaps and bounds”. Hurray!

2nd hour was level 3/4: ridge hand strikes, inside & outside slap kicks, side kicks, spinning side kicks, & defense against gun to the head, front & side attack. For the gun portion I worked with a cop. I always prefer to do gun and knife with cops or soldiers, as they are freaking anal about technique, will really fight to retain the weapon, and always have good advice. I’m not great at weapons, I’m afraid. I still get “shot” fairly often.

First hour there were lots of first timers in class, so we worked basics. I worked with Crazy L, a female lifelong athlete who kicks so freaking hard she lifts me off the ground when I hold the bag for her. She’s cool. I’m reading an amazing book called On Combat by Lt. Col Dave Grossman. In it he writes, “In combat we don’t rise to the occasion, we sink to the level of our training”.

My teachers are always saying some version of this, but the way he presents it, it made a huge impression on me. So, Crazy L was defending against my 2 handed choke, throwing a couple of knees & just standing there like “okay, your turn”. I made her instead attack me much harder & continue to attack until I fell to the ground. We had so much fun. This book is having a huge effect on how I train, its awesome.

Speaking of fun, 2nd hour was krav groundfighting! Full disclosure: I suck at defending against side mount! Dreadful. Escaping rear naked choke & being mounted are pretty good though. Then we rolled. I couldn’t be happier. Hope y’all are having a great day!

You rock, Parker!

Thanks, Dan the Man!
