Ok, now that my “vision quest” is done (dropping 35lbs in 6 weeks to compete at Cruiser weight instead of super heavy) I’ll give a recap.

As for cutting the weight, I ended up cutting 9lbs on Friday before weigh-in. The first 6 were relatively easy, but the last 3 was complete hell. The way I did it was with a rotation of 10 minutes in the sauna, followed by 5 minutes on the bike, followed by a 2 minute rest, all wearing a rubber sweat suit. By the end I??d switched it to 5, 5 & 5. I started at noon and it took until 4 to get all of the weight off. The last hour was absolutely miserable. Sitting in the sauna was by far the worst part. One minute seemed like an hour and it was playing weird tricks on my mind. I literally thought I was going to lose it at the end. Almost as bad as the cut was the drive to weigh in and waiting in line. It??s a weird feeling, being that dehydrated. My vision was cloudy, my mouth was felt like it was filled with sand and I was weak as can be. I ended up weighing in at 199.1 and downed a bottle of Vitamin Water before I even got dressed. I??m glad I went through it, at least once, but I think I??ll make sure I??m within 4 or 5 lbs next time.

On to competition day. I??d signed up to compete in Master??s and Adults Gi and No-Gi, but I ended up only competing in Master??s No-Gi, because 1) 4 matches in less than an hour really wears you out, 2) I think I was still feeling some effects of the cut and 3) I strained my neck in my second match and it was really starting to tighten up.

Match 1: There were an odd number of people in my division and by luck of the draw I ended up having to win my way into the brackets. I ended up winning controlling most of the match and winning on points, 8-2.

Match 2: This was a fun one. The guy was obviously a wrestler, which I??m not, so I pulled to open guard and pulled of a nice butterfly guard sweep and ended up in mount. I almost had an arm triangle locked in, but he slipped his elbow down when I was trying to slide to side mount. So then I started to attack the arms and ended up submitting him with an Americana.

Match 3: This guy was HUGE. This is the match where I learned the difference between a lean 199 and one with 15 extra pounds of fat (me). This guy was an absolute beast and I think I was beat mentally before we even started. Long story short, I pulled guard, but wasn??t able to out technique his strength. I think I was definitely the more skilled grappler and looking back I had some opportunities that I didn??t take advantage of. He ended up guillotine choking me with about 30 seconds left in the match. I HATE TAPPING!

Match 4: Here I??m playing for 3rd place. This was the first guy that wasn??t stronger than me (something to think about) and we had a pretty technical match. We went back and forth for a while and I ended up sinking in a papa choke about 3 minutes in.

All in all it was an excellent day. I felt my technique was the best in my division but I was overpowered at times. I either need to drop weight classes or replace the last of my fat with muscle. I??ll definitely need to think about my program over the next couple months.

Congrats! Nothing to be ashamed of, there.

Take a bit of time off, evaluate where you want to go next in your training (you’ve already given some options) and come up with a gameplan.

If you need any advice from us, don’t hesitate to ask.

What a great story! And you tell it well.
I’m all fired up! Thanks!

Today,
10x150 cock push ups

Hello, I’d like in on this, please! I think it’ll push me…so…today’s krav classes:

first hour: endless jumping squats & pushups, hammerfist drills, then kicking & shooting in for knees, ending with choke defense from behind.

second hour: prepping for test - defenses against straight punch, then back kicks (spinning & regular), then just a bit of ground work - flipping your attacker while he has you mounted & choked.

I think I can safely say I’d never try to defend myself with a spinning back kick - I tend to get dizzy. But I adore groundfighting.[/quote]

Thanks for posting, Miss Parker. Can you give us some details on your MA background and if you have any plans to do any competitions?

Man, what a weird schedule.

I didn’t train Friday, then Saturday I was at this BW exercise seminar, which was kind of fun, but I mostly assisted everyone else.

**EDIT: Oh, I forgot, since it was a strong man gym, I got schooled in tire flippin’ and log-bar liftin’ by Josh Henkin, who was hanging out. I did my best to lift a granite stone and did a few farmer’s walks. That was pretty awesome. When I get the pics I’ll post them if I look cute enough.

Sunday I was supposed to have a BJJ lesson with this girl but, meh, it imploded. My coach took me out to Monster Park and I did this awesome grappling-specific conditioning workout:

  1. 3 chin-ups

super set with:

  1. 6 Hindu Push-ups

5 rounds in 10 min.

Bulgarian training bag circuit (39# bag)

  1. Good Morning Stretch x 10

  2. Around-the-Worlds 5 right/5 left

  3. Flat-foot Russian Squat x 20

  4. Bag throw 5 left/5 right

3 rounds

  1. 180 walking lunges (with the Bulgarian bag on the shoulders) over to the monkey bars
    (9 min)

  2. 5 trips across the monkey bars

I’ve been doing krav for one year & before that I did karate for almost 3 years. We don’t do competitions in krav, and anyway, I’m 42 years old, so its a bit late to get started there, I think. While doing karate I trained for just a few months in BJJ with a guy who trains under Relson Gracie, who I was able to do a little seminar with. Loved him. At the time I wasn’t able to afford both schools, so I stuck with karate, but I never got over my love for grappling. I never did anything at all athletic, ever, before karate.

I was a stereotypical flabby out-of-shape suburban housewife until I discovered the joys of training until I want to cry, pass out, or puke. I don’t know what’s gotten into me, or where this will lead, but I know I’m happy.

15 chins!

Walk of the penitent

^cool photos.

Strength Workout
Warm-up: 5 min. jump rope
1A. Machine Chest Press, 5x5
1B. Weighted chins, 5x5
2. Front Squat, 5x5
3. Good Mornings, 5x5
4A. Bicep Curl, 5x5
4B. Rope Pressdown, 5x5

Finished with 10 min. of stretching.

Last night:

more hammerfists
punch defenses w/ counters
punch combinations
roundhouse kicks w/ partner absorbing (taking the blow to toughen the legs)
vertical front kicks, shooting in for knees

improvement: last week while kneeing this Israeli kid I had a weak hold on his head, so he decided to teach me a lesson by shooting up & slamming me in the cheekbone with the back of his head. Lesson learned. Last night for knees I had a freaking death grip on my partners head. She was shrieking like a banshee, hee hee.
Thanks, kid!

Hi Miss Parker,

You know 42 isn’t too late to get started in BJJ, since you have the option of tapping, you can avoid a lot of the injuries that come with most martial arts, especially the striking sports, and have a long career, it’s not too late at all. If you love grappling and ground fighting, you should totally go for it.

In fact, it will keep you young, because of all the rolling on the spine, it keeps it supple, and that’s one of the secrets of youthful vitality.

Heck, Helio still rolls (with the girls) and he’s 95.

Thanks, Downwardog. I’m preparing now to take my level 3 test in krav in a few weeks (I actually felt my stomach lurch when I typed that) & we do more groundfighting once you reach level 3. I can definitely see myself training with my old BJJ teacher, Phil Cardella, in the future. I’ve maintained a friendship with one of the students there & its a great school. I really appreciate your kind words.

Nice training pictures. I??d love to add some outdoor ??strongman?? type training. I need to find some people who do that in my area.

I decided to go to a 4 day split for the next month.

Day One ?? Pull
Day two ?? Push
Day three ?? full body unilateral
Day four ?? full body bodyweight circuit

Today was day one:
Deadlift ?? 5x3
Chin-up ?? 4xfailure
Power Clean ?? 3x6
Nose Pull ?? 2x15
BBell Curl ?? 3x8-10

I posted this in my thread but I’m posting it here, too:

Last night I went to BJJ at Carley Gracie’s. Carley let me flip him

It feels so wrong to throw or choke your venerable professor. What a gift these guys give their students to get them over their inhibitions.

We went over a lot of throws, and from this day forward, if anyone ever comes up from behind and bear hugs me, they will end up flat on their back with a broken ankle, knee, or both.

The second half of the class was sparring. This was my first time doing a round-robin style, where I had to fight every guy in the class. Oh, I was nervous.

It was so interesting how every guy had a different feel. One was so dense, with a high proportion of lean body mass, like my coach, and that is a very intimidating feeling. I got very scared while wrestling, I suppose it recreates the experience I had of being pummeled as a child, and totally out of control. It’s times like this that I ask myself what the hell am I doing here, this is real BJJ and this isn’t fun, it’s awful and frightening. But it’s good, because I’m forced to stay calm, and that’s what it’s all about, using your wits in a difficult situation. I’m glad I have my mouth guard, because I bite into it, and have to breathe through the nose, which keeps the nervous system more relaxed, and I can hear myself breathing, and it has a soothing effect on me.

The next guy was like wrestling a bear! Not a giant grizzly, but a brown bear, one that looks friendly enough but can kill you in about a second. I mean, don’t for a second think he’s a pet or you’re in a Disney movie, you know? I tapped twice in two minutes. I wondered out loud, “what should I do?” He answered, “you should tap.”

Downwardog, you ARE a valiant teen fighter! What a fun (scary sweaty fun) session.

I’m on my way out of town for a few days, so I just hit the weights today for a quickie:

chinups
deadlifts
overhead squats (only my second time, very difficult for me)
dumbell squats
pushups (regular & triceps)
calf lift thingys

^ Miss Parker, you’re not alone. OH Squats are difficult for a lot of people, myself included.

Conditioning Workout
2 rounds Jump Rope
8 rounds Shadowboxing – really focused on my technique and tried to throw punches at full speed instead of half-assing them.
3 rounds Bodyweight circuit
-20 squats
-20 med. ball push-ups
-20 crunches

Hey, Miss Parker, I’m only good at OH squats using a broom handle!

So good for you. Nice program.

Here’s yesterday’s workout:

Wednesday’s strength workout:

  1. handstand holds x 3
    super set

  2. chin-ups x 3

3 rounds

  1. push-ups x 10
    super set

  2. BW Rows x 10
    3 rounds

  3. Sumo DL 135# x 4
    super set

  4. Glute-Ham Raise x 10
    3 rounds

ab circuit

25 min walk up hills

I felt heavy and slow and not very motivated. Maybe it was the heat, it’s very hot here. I was also out of BCAAs and that may have made a difference. I made a deal with myself to only do the basic program and not go for any PR and that was an adequate workout. I still ended up progressing in both weight and reps on the DL

Due to some fiasco at work, I ended up making two more trips up and down those bloody hills. I was dead by night fall.

DJ says he’s not posting anymore. What do you guys want to do with this thread?
