It looks like the war is coming, so I would like to make this thread a link depository for military and tactical analysis of the subject. Please leave the political bickering for elsewhere in the forum.

In my view, Iran poses a military threat that will be far harder to deal with than Iraq.

Its about time we got down to business and cut the head off the snake. When done with those animals, its on to NK.
And this time let’s fight with no mercy…leave the whole place a pasture land with a few nomads running pigs.

Oh hell yes I can’t wait for NK’s turn. I’m gonna be the next Chesty Puller!
The day will come when Headhunters family will be trouble, He may be alive or deceased.
Right now we know for certain that the administration is currently doing all they can to push forth the idea to the public of Iran Supplying weapons to elite iraqi forces.
“I’m going to do something about it,” Bush pledged, displaying apparent irritation at being repeatedly asked about mixed administration signals on who was behind the weaponry.
“To say it is provoking Iran is just a wrong way to characterize the commander in chief’s decision to do what is necessary to protect our soldiers in harm’s way,” Bush said.
But he said U.S. troops are counting on lawmakers to provide them the funds they need to win.
In sum, the Bush Administration seems to have concluded that Iran is guilty until proven innocent and continues to maintain that the Persian Gulf belongs to Americans - not to Persians - setting the stage for a potential military strike.
First phase will involve the sinking of the navy in port and as much of the airforce as they can on the ground. This will happen after an Iranian provocation real or implied. A naval embargo will ensue that will blockade oil exports and imports of refined fuel.
At this stage I think they will destory the airforce and then maintain air superiority. Any massed armor or infantry will be hit and destroyed
I’d look for special forces to stir up resistance.
At this point they will be offered terms and conditions. I don’t think we ever invade with ground troops. The regime falls because they can’t protect the population.

As to Iran as a threat and reasonable suspicion regarding their ongoing support of terrorism and attacks on the U.S. for the last 30 years please reference the books by Robert Baer: SEE NO EVIL, and SLEEPING WITH THE DEVIL

Agreed. The threat posed by Iran militarily is bad enough to give even the most aggressive of Hawks pause. Combine this with the vast oil reserves they are sitting on and their terrorism apparatus…the most experienced and possibly most funded in the world…and what we have is a disaster in the making that will have us looking back at Iraq with fond nostalgia…

So the thing to do is ignore them and hope they don’t attack us? Newsflash: they’re doing it NOW.

Sounds like the strategy from the First Gulf War.
I think ground troops will still be needed, because the people that are still the most organized are the super Islamic types, so they will retain power in one way or another, just like they have gained it in Iraq.
I think the government would fall like Hedo says, but then controlling the population would be even more difficult then Iraq, and it would fucking bleed this country dry.

Stop acting like a damn fool. We can’t handle this war that we’re in- we can’t move to another one.
It’s like failing at 250 on the bench, but just loading the bar with 500 for the hell of it …if you couldn’t handle the first one, why would you go for the second?
We can’t fight the world HH. I’m surprised you have so little wisdom or realism for being as old as you are.
Wherever we go next I hope it’ll be a conventional war with lots of tank and air battles and amphibious landings. The U.S. would easily win such a war. I’m not looking forward to fighting another guerilla war. That’s why I’d much rather fight North Korea than Iran.
And also I heard a lot of young Iranians don’t like their government and have a favorable view of America but if we go to war with them we will probably just unite them against us.
Teran will be parking lot. Israel is likely to jump in on the boat as well and eliminate hezbollah at the same time. At its current state the Iranian people hate their current leader and a special forces effort to overthrow Iran from within is in the most likely possibility. As for specific military strategy its pretty smiple.
Concentrated airstrikes eliminate navy and large military bases.
Coast will be blockaded
Special Forces will work with current resistance in Iran to secure Teran and stage a coup.

Right, well what we should/better be doing is putting as much effort into developing realistic intelligence, especially humint, inside the regime and using the nonviolent parts of politics to put as much international pressure on them as possible to get some kind of resolution in this matter. This task is made sooo much more difficult now that we have stuck ourselves to that tarbaby next door.
The populace in Iran may have problems with their government but then so did the Iraqis…
Diplomacy?the art of saying “Nice doggie” until you can find a stick…

Well-spoken. I DO get carried away sometimes.
I think that keeping order in the world is simply not in our future. Doing so requires something like a Prussian state, that devotes 80% of its resources to military.
The Chinese will not be as nice as we are. The rest of the world might regret not accepting US hegemony.
