Mike Rowe & A Conservative Scholarship

Mike Rowe, formerly of Dirty Jobs, appeared on TheBlaze TVâ??s â??Wilkow!â?? Thursday night to discuss his exciting new scholarship program, the mikeroweWORKS Scholarship Fund. The goal is to get high school seniors ready to enter the workforce with the skills they need to land the jobs that are available in the U.S. â?? the key word being available.

â??The jobs right now that we have available, people donâ??t seem to want â?? and it makes no sense because weâ??re lending money we donâ??t have to kids who canâ??t pay it back to train them for jobs that no longer exist,â?? Rowe told TheBlaze TVâ??s Andrew Wilkow.

Each mikeroweWORKS scholarship is worth $15,000 on average â?? a nice chunk of change. However, any high school senior interested in the program must first take the â??S.W.E.A.T. Pledgeâ?? (Skills and Work Ethic Arenâ??t Taboo) and make a case as to why they are deserving of the scholarship in the form of a video.

â??If youâ??re not willing to sign it, this particular pile of free money is probably not for you,â?? Rowe said.

Over the next few months, mikeroweWORKS will partner with some of the very best trade and technical Schools in the country, starting with the Mid-West Technical Institute (MTI).

1. I believe that I have won the greatest lottery of all time. I am alive. I walk the Earth. I live in America. Above all things, I am grateful.

2. I believe that I am entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing more. I also understand that â??happinessâ?? and the â??pursuit of happinessâ?? are not the same thing.

3. I believe there is no such thing as a â??bad job.â?? I believe that all jobs are opportunities, and itâ??s up to me to make the best of them.

4. I do not â??follow my passion.â?? I bring it with me. I believe that any job can be done with passion and enthusiasm.

5. I deplore debt, and do all I can to avoid it. I would rather live in a tent and eat beans than borrow money to pay for a lifestyle I canâ??t afford.

6. I believe that my safety is my responsibility. I understand that being in â??complianceâ?? does not necessarily mean Iâ??m out of danger.

7. I believe the best way to distinguish myself at work is to show up early, stay late, and cheerfully volunteer for every crappy task there is.

8. I believe the most annoying sounds in the world are whining and complaining. I will never make them. If I am unhappy in my work, I will either find a new job, or find a way to be happy.

9. I believe that my education is my responsibility, and absolutely critical to my success. I am resolved to learn as much as I can from whatever source is available to me. I will never stop learning, and understand that library cards are free.

10. I believe that I am a product of my choices â?? not my circumstances. I will never blame anyone for my shortcomings or the challenges I face. And I will never accept the credit for something I didnâ??t do.

11. I understand the world is not fair, and Iâ??m OK with that. I do not resent the success of others.

12. I believe that all people are created equal. I also believe that all people make choices. Some choose to be lazy. Some choose to sleep in. I choose to work my butt off.

On my honor, I hereby affirm the above statements to be an accurate summation of my personal worldview. I promise to live by them.

Above is a pledge that scholarship recipients have to sign.

If I was in high school I would sign it.

I might complain about how this country is run, but I am happy I have a job, and I work my ass off every day.

I like Mike, we went to the same college actually, he’s a symbol of the working man. I hope more scholarships like this pop up. I think getting $10K for an Art History degree is beyond stupid.

Why is that beyond stupid what a student who wins a scholarship chooses to major in?

Because there are very few to zero jobs available in fields like Art History.

I don’t care what they major in, but I find it laughable when graduates complain, often about student debt, when their major is basket weaving.

So you went from getting 10K for an Art History degree is stupid to not caring what people major in…which is it? We have too many people in majors with a lack of jobs right now, but that is no reason to oppose people’s choice in what they choose to get a higher education in. 0 jobs in Art History is simply not true. We don’t need no one to major in history anymore than we need everyone to major in it. If jobs aren’t there it is on students AND advisors to talk about the low demand in a major and explain potential issues with student debt and a lack of a job.

If a kid gets a scholarship I am not against that kid using it in any major they want to and I think it’s a bit strange you seem to be. Who exactly do you think should make that decision? I think parents and kids going to college should decide it.

I love the sound of Mike Rowe’s scholarship for what it’s worth.

Because college is like an investment.

You invest in junk bonds and they turn out not paying the interest, well looks like you’re a dumbass that should have thought about the risk before hand.

Same with picking a major. Want to follow your passions? Great, enjoy. STFU about it when you are a barista at Starbucks with a 100k degree in art history if that ends up the case thought.

There is nothing inconsistent with what I wrote. I think it’s really stupid to spend money on an Art History degree even if you get a $10K scholarship (last I check even state schools are more than that). I also don’t care if someone is dumb enough to do this. They are free to put themselves in debt for what will ultimately earn them a night time manager position at McDonald’s. I don’t really care.

I don’t oppose people’s choice in major, I think their choice in major (if it isn’t practical) is stupid.

[quote]H factor wrote:

He isn’t saying anyone should make the choice for them, he is saying that would be a dumb choice.

Completely agree, but why would ANYONE be against a kid who wins a scholarship getting to pick what major they choose to study? What a bizarre stance to take.

Their are people in America with Art History degrees who make a ton of money. Their are people who majored in engineering who are working at McDonald’s.

The demand for someone with an Art History degree is likely not high at this point and likely never has been very high. We could say the same thing about a lot of History degrees. So NO ONE should be allowed to major in History? Plenty of people who have majored in history MAKE A LOT OF MONEY. Some don’t. Some aren’t using the degree. Some are. Americans change jobs all the time. We don’t need everyone majoring in history anymore than we need everyone majoring in ANYTHING. You don’t want anyone in America to study history?! You think anyone in America who gets a history degree is setup to work in Starbucks or McDonald’s?

A lot of anger towards letting someone study what they want to study in college.

I think you are purposefully being dense or baiting me.

I am not angry. I do not care what people major in. I am not nor have I said they should not be allowed to get a degree in anything they want.

Jesus, you probably don’t remember this, but about a month ago I point out how you always take things TO THE EXTREME. This is a perfect example of that.

[quote]H factor wrote:

I think the anger is not in them getting a degree. The anger is them bitching and moaning for a government bail out of their $100k student loans that they can not pay for because they can not find a job in their field of study.

Students shouldn’t have 100k in student loans to begin with and students should understand the demand for their degree before going into it. I would never argue someone who couldn’t find a job with their degree should get a government bailout of anything. We DO have unemployed engineers though. It’s not nearly that simple.

My brother is in education. When he went into school he was told he would never have to look for a job because we had such a teacher shortage. He has a job, but he frequently comments about how a few hundred people now apply for one teacher opening. Markets change all the time. Being an expert in a field of history could easily lead to a very lucrative job. It’s not something that every one should do, but what major could we say that about to begin with?

If students can’t find jobs in fields then they should not go into them in the first place or realize the diminished ability of them to easily find a job right after graduation in the field of their choice.

I read it as this:

I think getting 10K (receiving a scholarship) for an Art History degree is beyond stupid. As in why would anyone who got a scholarship (amount is trivial to be honest) be allowed to go into Art History.
