I don’t really know much about economics but why can’t American car manufacturers just not hire union workers?

They have a contract with the union that forces them to hire union workers.[/quote]

Which is exactly why Michigan needs right to work laws. This would put an end to unions strongarming new hires into joining the union. Right now folks have to join the union when they are hired, no choice. Which is, IMHO, bullshit.

As it stands right now, if I didn’t want to be an IAFF member, that’s my choice. However, here’s the kicker; even if I’m not a union member of my department, my department’s local still can deduct their dues from my check. I have no say in the matter.

Nice huh. Here’s to the unions looking out for the little guy, whether you want them to or not.

Everyone wants to complain about unions but doesn’t realize how shity of a work environment it would be with out them.

Every right and or benefit currently held by a factory worker, etc, is due to the unions. Most unions only charge between 1% and 1hour of your paycheck.

Unions wouldn’t need to exist if tighter corporate regulations existed. Many workers would never get a pay raise or medical insurance without the unions to represent them. Consider this payment for working in a free enterprise society.

Unions were crucial to improving worker rights and pay. Unfortunately unions are big business with all the inherent problems, greed and corruption of big business.

Unions are generally unnecessary today and can hurt a business and its workers.

Many people have good jobs, good benefits and good pay without being in a union.

My company pays well, has FREE healthcare (no payroll deduction) and is non union.

Worker morale is far higher than the unionized places I have worked.

LIFTICVS,

Should unions be able to force workers to join? Should it not be a free choice made by the new hiree?

That being said, I realize unions were born out of necessity. However, they’re in danger of morphing into what they once fought.
