The arm wrestler John Brzenk is a great example of long term strength, as mentioned above.

If you have been lifting for decades, big gains might only come if you neglected an area for years. I have been able to gain size in my shoulders and yoke in my 40s, but largely because I never did specific exercises for them.

If you start lifting in your 40s or 60s, it may be harder to gain muscle than if one started earlier, but it can certainly be done.
