I’m glad you were proactive and got tested because from what I’ve read such screening is not routine, although it seems that it absolutely should be.

@ Mouldsie - I agree that sublingualy, B12 might not be very effective, but then again whatever isn’t is otherwise sent to the intestines, where I haven’t read anything about absorption issues being common. This website doesn’t differentiate between effectiveness of oral, injectable, or inhaled forms: Metformin and Risk For Vitamin B12 Deficiency - DSM although it does indicate that vegetarians and the elderly might need additional B12, indicating that those groups could have absorption issues (well vegetarians obviously just don’t get enough in their diets).
Sir, VA is Veteran’s Administraton. I am a Veteran, and receive treatment at a VAMC, Veterans’ Administration Medical Center. Back when I enlisted we were assured that if we ever needed Medical attention the VAMC would be there for us. Let me onbly say, I earned it.

I am on vacation, and do not have figures available to me, but the low mcg’s of B12 was very small amount. As Diabetics we are very concerned with nerve damage from the gloucose. The lack of proper amounts of B12 can resuot in nerve damage all on it’s own. So people like you and I have got to be keenly aware of our situations. All All of this body building is supposed to be about good health & strength. Back when this all started it was Olympic lift contests. After the contests there got to be a beauty contest that developed into the Mr whatever contests. You are correct to be into the good health and strength part of life. This is especially important to diabetics, and those who wish to make sure that do not get this dreaded desease.

Thanks BulletProofTiger for the link. I am bit concerned now.

Does anyone have a link or suggestion on the daily recommended dosage of VitB12? Thank you.

Thanks Philip for your kind explanation. My personal trainer has some skills in mineral imbalances (don’t know if you’d call B12 a mineral) and will ask him how I can get it tested. My guess is a blood test is needed. Just FYI - I managed to get my fasted glucose test down to between 5 to 6 mmol/L (or around 99 mg/dl). I just quit eating carbs like bread, rice and pasta and kept up with meat, fish, eggs, nuts, berries, cheese. It’s been this level for the last 2 months. I’ll have a H1Ac test coming up in about 1 to 2 months. I’ll check with my doctor on B12 that time too.

Thanks for bringing up this issue Philip, atleast we know now what to do

Like I may have mentioned, Dr Whitaker wrote about this in June. I gave the info to my diabetic counselor who asked the lab to test me for B12. If not for Whitaker this never would have come up. As I mentioned I am on vacation. If you have an e mail address in 2 weeks I will try to send you a copy of Whitaker and his references. I will be out for about 2 weeks.

The reason why B12 is injected in > 50 yo caucasian men is due to the loss of intrinsic factor and the stomach pH increasing. Its a genetic trait usually confined to the caucasian race and men in particular. If you aren’t in that population and have a functioning GI tract, taking B12 via injection is a waste of money, needles, and pain.

Additionally, sublingual B12 would be infinitely beter than injections for those who fit the criteria above, but I doubt very seriously much is being absorbed sublingually. Cyanocobalamin is a huge molecule…not conducive to passing through that sublingual barrier. It will be absorbed well when it eventually is swallowed though.
Great explanation Modok. Agree completely.

Thanks all of you for your help. From working hard at doing things right, weights, aerobics and diet, diet & diet, I scared the hell out of me this AM! For the first time in 10 years my blood sugar was down to 101. If I can do it, anybody can.
