Med School Interviews

Hey,

I’m asking because I know that there are a lot of docs/med students on this site. I just got notified that my first (and only, only applied to one) med school interview will be in a month. Naturally, I’m a little concerned having been rather invested in pursuing this for a few years.

What I’m trying to say is that I want to prepare as best as possible so I don’t have to go through another year of this bullshit. I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of any decent interview prep materials, be it websites, books I can torrent, etc. Anything you found helpful. Tips are also always welcome.

It’s a Canadian school, if that makes a difference.

Thanks and happy lifting

forums.studentdoctor.net is a goldmine. Good luck!

Aren’t Canadian schools even tougher than US allopathic schools becuase they have less seats?

What helped me was:
-buy the latest version of MSAR book
-SDN forums and articles, but take some of the posters with a grain of salt and theyre often fellow applicants
-common interview stuff. Read your essays and application over, practice, find the questions ahead of time, market yourself specifically to the schools’ mission statements, ask insightful questions rather than the generic “where do your residents place”

Also don’t be afraid to talk about your artsy passions like lifting, as they’re educators and dig that stuff. With any sensitive questions be diplomatic but take a stance firmly

Which med school is it if you don’t mind me asking? A couple have really crazy interviews / application processes. McMaster is one such school. I did my undergrad there and it’s an amazing school but, their med school is pretty envelope-pushing. University of Toronto, McGill, Queens and Western Ontario are all a little more of your typical conservative approach schools.

If you did undergrad research, now it cold. Ask insightful questions that show you’re truly interested in that school. Things like if the student environment is more competitive or collaborative etc. Also be able to tell them why that exact school is better than any other school for you.

gradcafe is a pretty good website as well.

Excellent info here. Highly recommended.

Before you go to med school spend some time in a hospital and read Samuel Shem’s The House of God.

Before you go into any interview, youtube search “ted talks power pose.”

University of Alberta. Only school I’ll go to because I don’t want to be away from my son.

And thanks so much for all the help! I will definitely check up on those!
