That’s probably because of unspecific training at that point. You were used to high reps and became efficient at them.
Pretty much, yeah. I find similar things with squats, etc. Once the weight is light enough that you don’t have to think too much about your set up, it’s a whole different ball game.
I agree. For me I specifically notice this on bench and ohp. I can rep weights pretty close to my max and then there just comes a cut off.
agreed, in the OHP a 2.5kg jump feels more like 10kg

Work laptop is being funny about these forums, hence the lack of updates.
Nothing major to report before today; had a few days off from Wed-Sun and then hit a quick full-body deload-y session on Monday. Touch Rugby cancelled yesterday owing to frozen pitch, so picking things back up weightroom-wise today.
Weight has improved and I’ve been 234-235 so far this week. Waistline down again as well.

Monday, 2 March
Switching things up as I’ve just under four weeks before the wedding, which means a last-ditch push to trim down the waistline further.
Speaking of, 235.2 today.
Running Young Wendler for one cycle as I drop calories. Also get to add in some steady state cardio 3-4 times a week there which will be a good base building for a planned increase in conditioning after Easter in preparation for rugby.
Training
Squat
8x20kg (44lbs/empty bar)
8x20kg (44lbs/empty bar)
5x60kg (132lbs/1 plate)

3x110kg (242lbs)
3x120kg (264lbs)
7x130kg (286lbs) (ties a PR)
Definitely had the strength for another, but I got pitched forward and panic-racked it.

5x40kg (88lbs)
3x55kg (121lbs)
3x62.5kg (138lbs)

Tuesday, 3 March
Down to a 2020 low of 233.8 today.
Training
Incline Treadmill March
10/15 incline
5.5km/h
20 minutes
Been doing these for a couple of weeks to get the heart rate up and condition my calves and ankles for running.
Over the coming weeks I’d like to get faster over a longer distance. They’re pretty tough, more mentally than anything else.
YouTube helps a bit…
Wednesday, 4 March
Dropped down again to 231.8 today. Had a beer last night though so that’s cheating.
Training
Indoor Cycling
15km
34:12
Allegedly 272 calories burned.
Should be playing Touch Rugby tonight if weather permits.
Thursday, 5 March
Weighed in at 232.0 today. Still pretty on-track for being well into the 220s by the end of the month; Six Nations games being cancelled is a huge boost to my waistline as well.
Deadlifts today, for I think maybe the fourth time in the past six or seven months? TM definitely too high for it, but fuck it for one cycle I’ll stubbornly keep it as-is.
Training
Med Ball Slams/Box Jumps
Because if I’m doing 5/3/1, I should do 5/3/1.
Five rounds:
3x12kg (27lb) med ball slams
3x24" (61cm) box jumps (might have been 30"/75cm I can’t remember now)
Power Clean
3x55kg (110lb)
3x62.5kg (137lb/one plate and change)
3x70kg (154lb)
Zero technique here. Should really learn these properly.
Deadlift
3x125kg (275lb) (felt heavy…)
3x145kg (319lb/just over 3 plates) (felt heavier)
5x160kg (352lb) (Meh. My PR at this weight is 7 reps, so not awful)
1a. Strict Dumbbell Row
20x35kg (77lb)
17x35kg (77lb)
1b. Dumbbell Bench Press
10x25kg (55lb)
8x32.5kg (70lb) (PR)
Bulgarian Split Squat
10x20kg (44lbs, AKA a 10kg/22lb plate in each hand)
8x20kg (44lbs)
Barbell Curls
20x25kg (55lbs)
15x25kg (55lbs)
15x25kg (55lbs)
If having a beer is cheating, I am in the deepest of shit.
Good work!
Friday, 6 March
Weighed in at 231.9 despite being out for dinner yesterday. Had had a super-low-cal lunch in preparation.
Training
Incline Treadmill March
10/15 incline
5km/h
40 minutes
Allegedly 400 calories burned
What’s the difference between a march and a walk? Is marching just walking with a better PR agent?
Saturday, 7 March
Weight spiked up a bit to 233.6 but still trending in the right direction.
Training
Press
3x40kg (88lbs)
3x45kg (100lbs)
9x52.5kg (115lbs)
Not bad considering I’ve not done it in a while.

3x60kg (132lbs/1 plate)
3x65kg (143lbs)
3x70kg (154lbs)
3x75kg (165lbs)
3x80kg (176lbs)
3x85kg (187lbs)
Chinup
3xBW
3x5kg (11lbs)
3x10kg (22lbs) (joint PR - and I was 15-20lbs lighter last time)
Incline Dumbbell Bench
12x25kg (55lbs) (PR)
12x25kg (55lbs)
10x25kg (55lbs)
Neck Harness/Raise
Three sets:
Harness: 25x5kg (11lbs)
Raise: 20x5kg (11lbs)
Monday, 16 March
Whatever weird glitch was stopping these forums loading on my work laptop seems to have abated, at least for today.
Since last logging I have:
- Maintained weight
- Not caught coronavirus, or at least have been asymptomatic
- Not hit any bench PRs, but matched a couple again
- Did a 20-rep close-grip bench set at 50kg/110lbs for some reason
- Thought about trying to convince the missus to let me set up a mini home gym in the office
- Hit a 140kg/308lb SSB PR
- Managed a couple of chinups +15kg/35lbs
- Started running again
- Just finished an incredibly slow 5K
Congrats on the SSB PR. And on not having the plague.
Oh, almost forgot to add:
- Spent most free time slightly stressing about how I’m meant to be going overseas to get married in two weeks during the midst of a pandemic.
Will you guys be serving… Corona?
I was coming in here to say well done on the progress man, but priorities first.
Hope it pans out for you man.
@dagill2 if my wife-to-be asks then you are right, I definitely don’t prioritise my bench press over my relationship. No sir.
We’re actually quite lucky in that we’re not doing a “proper” wedding, which at this stage would have already had to be cancelled and probably lost us a lot of money. We’re going off ourselves, then having a dinner the following week with immediate family, then having a reception party thing a couple of weeks after.
The actual wedding itself is just the pair of us, so that might end up not being in danger. The planned hotel/restaurant after, who knows? The family dinner might go ahead sans grandparents, but we might just postpone it. The reception will likely be postponed too.
Fortunately everything is moveable and we won’t wind up losing much (or any) money, but it’s quite annoying. Grand scheme of things, though, it’s only a wedding and it’s silly to be too upset about anything changing when thousands of people have died.
@mr.v3lv3t we will actually be choosing beers and I think it would be pretty fucking funny to make that the main one. Except I would prefer Peroni.
DO NOT SAY THAT to any woman.
If you’re travelling overseas it could be difficult depending on destination. Some (mine included) has closed the borders.
Anyway I hope you’ll get a great wedding, postpone the dinner and reception, combine it by then and throw a huge after corona/wedding party to celebrate life.
