Mattjp's Training Log

This sounds really exciting. Massive gainz to be had if it is the right group with a good vibe.

Yeah that’s my hope. It’s on the pricey side for ā€œa gym membershipā€ but pretty cheap for a pretty small (3 students, 1 trainer) coaching thing.

Up to 235.8 today for some bizarre reason.

Went to a new gym today that has a decent amount of strongman kit, but weirdly shit farmer’s handles. One set has a pick height of literally around five inches and a rolling handle and the other has grenade-style handles. Only occurred to me after that I could have strapped up the grenade ones but I wound up skipping farmer’s because I want to train farmer’s walks, not grip.

That said, the second exercise in BBM was a farmer’s hold so I just went straight to that.

BBM W1W1D3

Farmer’s Hold
35kg (80lbs) approx each hand w/fat handles for ~35s

Sandbag Load
Pick & extend:
1x 30kg (70lbs)
1x 40kg (90lbs)
1x 50kg (110lbs)
1x 60kg (135lbs)
1x 70kg (160lbs)
Load onto ~5ft platform:
9x60kg (135lbs)
Wanted 10 but the eighth nearly killed me and the ninth was sloppy as hell.

Keg Carry
Two rounds: 25kg (55lbs) for ~150m (500ft)
Heaviest keg they had without messing about and pouring sand.

Viking Press
Not in today’s programming but I’ve never got to play with one before and I want to try as many strongmanny things as I can when I’ve the opportunity.

Did 8x strict reps up to a plate each side then push pressed a few more sets. No idea what actual weight that translates to.

How tall are you ?

6’3" or 189cm depending on your metricitude. Actually have no idea what you use for heights in Aus.

We use both mate. Kids tend to use CM but I’m older and from UK anyway so good old feet works for me.

Bit of a nightmare week since the last entry here. Car died, internet failed to arrive in the new gaff (work from home so not ideal) and various other disasters.

All in hand though and bright side is I got to go to that little gym run by the strongman lad. We didn’t do a ton, just some light drills of basic movements - though he did destroy me with lunges and battle ropes. Going to speak to him about making it regular and hopefully he can show me the figurative ropes on log and stones and general training. Fingers crossed.

Today I was at the future in-laws’ after buying a new car. Ate very little but slept really well and decided I was going to hit some PRs. So I did.

Training

Deadlift
8x60kg (135lbs)
5x100kg (225lbs)
3x120kg (275lbs)
2x140kg (315lbs) (I think this is a DOH beltless PR)
1x155kg (340lbs) (belt and straps on)
1x170kg (375lbs)
1x180kg (405lbs)
1x190kg (430lbs) (PR)
3x6x140kg (315lbs)

Press
8x20kg (45lbs)
5x40kg (90lbs)
3x50kg (110lbs)
3x55kg (120lbs)
2x60kg (135lbs) (PR double)
1x65kg (145lbs) (PR)
3x8x40kg (90lbs)
Superset these backoff sets with chinup triples, which I’m finding pretty fucking hard at 105kg/232lb I must say.

Lat Pulldown
3x12 at some weight or another

@cdmac24 cheers, I’ll try to hit some more to keep you interested haha

@simo74 thanks mate. Think I’m well knocking on the door of 200kg if 190kg is coming up at RPE9ish on an underfed day.

@Koestrizer vielen dank. Where is your strict press/push press at these days? I know you’ve a fairly mighty push press on you, just wondering how much you get out of leg drive vs strict.

I get a huge amount out of my leg drive.
My best push press to date is 2 sets of 3 reps with 120 kg. Haven’t maxed out in a while or done a anything lower volume.

I don’t train the strict press tbh, so I can’t give you an accurate number. I doubt that is higher than 80-85 kg.

Unpacked the scale last night but forgot to weigh in today. Feel about as fat as always though.

Woke up at like 3am today which was pretty annoying, but I was asleep before 10pm so I wasn’t as sleep-starved as it sounds. Sugar-free Monster sorted me out.

Workout

Front Squat
10x20kg (45lbs)
5x40kg (90lbs)
5x50kg (110lbs)
3x60kg (135lbs)
3x70kg (160lbs) (belt on)
1x80kg (180lbs)
1x92.5kg (205lbs) (PR)
1x100kg (225lbs) (PR again, just for you @duketheslaya)
3x4x80kg (180lbs) (hard as balls)

Push Press
8x20kg (45lbs)
5x40kg (90lbs)
3x50kg (110lbs)
3x60kg (135lbs)
1x70kg (160lbs)
1x75kg (170lbs) (gym PR)
1x80kg (180lbs) (only ever hit this in comp, which is pretty awesome)
3x5x65kg (145lbs)

Assistance
3x10 incline DB bench @ 20kg (45lbs)
25x Kroc Rows each arm @ 32.5kg (75lbs) (bit dizzy after these)
3x15 tricep pushdowns
15/10/10 rest-paused incline DB curls
3x12 lying leg curls

Went in today for the first actual training. One of the lads was doing log and we were all throwing in on farmers walks. Chatting too much to get tons done but should get more volume in once social obligations are done in the first session or two.

Will go for at least a few weeks but given it’s a 30m trip each way in the middle of a working day it might prove impractical to go daily when there’s an adequate commercial gym literally a five minute walk from home.

Training

Warmup
30-odd bodyweight lunges
Roughly 100m (300ft) farmer’s walk with 2x25kg (55lb) dumbbells

Farmer’s Walk
10 rounds as fast as possible. No chalk or belt.
60kg (135lbs) over 20ish metres (60ft) with drop and turn

Axle Deadlift
Double overhand, no chalk or belt.
2x8x60kg (135lbs)
2x8x80kg (180lbs)
5x5x100kg (135lbs) (mixed grip here)
Then three more rounds of the farmer’s walks.

Hammer Curls
Poundstone style for 100 total reps. Arms smoked after.

Tuesday, 20 August

Had an interview at group training time so decided to check out the gym around the corner from my house. I figured at the least they’d have some DBs and machines and I could just get a little pump on.

There’s two types of gyms, right? If you see a gym called ā€œYour Fitnessā€ or ā€œToning 4 Uā€ and their logo is a petite woman squatting with a 10kg fixed barbell or doing boxercise with pink 1kg DBs you figure it’s not the sort of place you’re going to find world record deadlifters training.

On the other hand if there’s a gym called ā€œPrimal Barbellā€ and the logo is a gorilla beating a child to death with an Atlas Stone then you figure it’s probably a good place to get stronger.

This gym is the former, and it’s on top of a shopping centre no less, so I figured it’ll be a good place for AM cardio or whatnot. Anyway it turns out they have multiple racks, a deadlift platform, dumbbells up to 75kg (165lbs) and even a fucking prowler.

Never again shall I judge a gym by its cover. This is a very cool result to find a place like this a five-minute walk away.

Training

Strict Barbell Press
10x20kg (45lbs)
8x30kg (70lbs)
5x40kg (90lbs)
5x45kg (100lbs)
5x50kg (110lbs)
5x55kg (120lbs) (PR I think; certainly a new 5RM)
3x5x50kg (110lbs)

T-Bar Row
8xbar
8xbar + 10kg (25lbs)
8xbar + 20kg
8xbar + 30kg
8xbar + 40kg

Close-Grip Bench
2x12, 1x10 @ 50kg (110lbs)

Lat Pulldown
3x12 at what the machine says is 45kg (100lbs)

Hammer Curl
3x10 @ 10kg (25lbs)

Tricep Pushdown
3x20 @ some weight (probably like 25kg/55lbs max)
