Matt Hughes Autobiography

I used to think he was a descent guy. No really. He always has that fake humble look on his face. I hope he retires.

or better yet, loses to Serra

I want to see Matt Serra beat him like a red headed step child.

SOme suggest this is normal for farm boys. This is not. They are not slit open in order to hear them scream. I grew up in the rural midwest, worked alot on farms, and many of my friends worked on farms.

Teaming up to beat up your dad is sociopathic.

Over the next few years this guy may put Mike Tyson to shame. He is not as well known to the general public as Mike Tyson so it may not make much of a splash. Its very conceivable he will commit a violent crime and not get away with it - or be the next pro-athlete to kill his wife and kid. Hopefully it won’t be linked to steroid use on his part.

The guy is sick and I think its obvious he and his family are probably going to self destruct - kindergarten son will go down with assault charges at some point, Mike will kill someone then kill himself, son will go on a 10 year drug and alcohol bender and blame his father etc.

Or another possibility is he will win a Nobel prize.

of the two possibilities I think the self-destruct path is the one he will choose.

There is a huge difference between MMA fighters and traditional martial artists. You look at Tsutomu Oshimas Shotokan Karate group, and something like 35% of his black belts hae doctorates. I am sure you will not find one MMA fighter with a doctorate level education. I am sure drug use and alcoholism is outstandingly different between the two groups.

I love watching UFC etc - but I certainly would not wish being the blue collar borderline personality sociopath that is common to UFC fighters on my son. I would much rather my son be something other than the type who fights UFC.

I think its a cultural difference. You get guys like Sakuraba,Fedor,or hell…Kid Yamamato. East Asian and Russian, they know the score. They have to be polite because they know that one day theyre going to be beat and if they arent humble about it,then its a bitch.

Basically they may be fighters but they know and understand that its just a game, that its nothing to dies over. They have a lto of respect and pride to maintain and honor. Now you get streetfighters like Tank or Krazy Horse that fought their way to the top, they cant grasp the whole concept.

I don’t know if this guy has a mirror or not but that is not red hair. I have red hair and it doesn’t look anything like his.

Just in case you guys forgot how the last fight turned out here is HD footage of the fight.

The part that bothers me most is his talk about other fighters in the book. And the guys he rips on the most are ones not in his weight class and guys he will never have to fight, which is pretty cowardly. Especially the parts about Randy Couture, where he passes off rumors and gym talk as fact and basically calls Randy a piece of garbage as a human being.

OTOH I’d rather have my son submit someone than accidently kill him whilst trying to survive or win a fight. Relson Gracie Jujitsu is the way to go IMO.

Fucking awesome.

I understand that Hughes likes to be a dick and obviously gets off on it a bit, but there is a line that you can cross where you just can’t respect them anymore. I think he is getting dangerously close to that line.

Go over to amazon.com and read the reviews. No one really mentions the disturbing behaviour outlined at the beginning of this thread. Has anyone here read the book?

Yes I have, and the original outline definetely focused on the negative and took things out of context. Regardless, this is not a good book, and was very poorly written. I had hoped that reading would shed some light on what drives one of the most dominant combat athletes of all time, instead it is an event driven recounting of what a dick he was until he accepted Jesus into his life, and then he talks about what a dick everyone else is now that he is a Christian.

Some of the off hand stories are funny, like the recounting of Lee Murray knocking Tito out in England, but nothing really new.

I’ve read it, and I’d say the summary in the OP is pretty accurate, but written with an agenda. The “sexual assault” mentioned is a good example of the negative tone. Regardless, the summary is enough to save you the cover price. Don’t buy this garbage.

Matt comes off as an even more arrogant toolbox than he does in UFC interviews. Win or loss, anyone that Matt has ever fought or wrestled against has been a can, except for one senior wrestler that beat his ass as a freshmen. At least according to him.

We all knew Hughes is, was, and always has been a dick, but the first post in this thread was literally unbelievable. Thanks for sharing.
