Mas Macros Podcast Episode LIbrary

Great episode, guys. From my perspective, this was the best podcast so far…which is saying something because the others were all great too. I’m glad Arash’s schedule allowed him to join again…many of his metaphors and analogies are extremely insightful – it’s not that he has an opinion that I haven’t heard before (or one that differs from yours), he just explains some things in a manner I previously hadn’t considered. The trio is definitely a complete package.

Summary: Great podcast episode.

The latest. Getting some great feedback on this one so far (and I’m sure plenty of negatives on the way as well -lol)

Thought this one was good as always guys. Got me through a butally brutal HIIT session.

I thought the Muscle Protein Synthesis talk was interesting. I suspect there is some other “missing piece” to that puzzle that isnt known yet. As you guys have noted, bro-splits work… so it cant JUST be the simulation of MPS that causes growth. Perhaps there is some recovery mechanism unrelated to MPS taking place in the days following MPS drops off.

I mean, if MPS drops off after 48-72 hours, and that is the only mechanism to initiate growth, than full body splits would be measurably 2-3x as productive from a muscle building stand point, assuming both were using a relatively similar set of exercises to hit the muscles the same. Obviously thats not the case, and it might even be the reverse to some degree… so it seems pretty clear that MPS isn’t the whole story.

More to the point of the podcast… I think the tide is turning a bit in terms of the “labcoats” online being taken seriously. It seems like the “cream rising to the top” are the coaches who both know the science, but can explain it or implement it simply, and have walked-the-walk. Our very own CT here would be a good example. Very impressive physique, down-to-earth advice, but when pressed or is needed can science the shit out of something.

Thank you! Was it followed by a brutal meal?

That’s what I think, as we have spoken about before.

Besides, and and as I and others have said over and over again, they work, and they’re not just for genetically gifted and geared people.

Yeah, even Scott Abel has a new YT video in which he discusses “evidenced based trainers”, which I want to check out. I THINK he likely mentioned the value of experience and actually being a competitor and working with dozens of high level competitors since the late 80’s, all before these smart alecks came on the scene, many of whom didn’t do a damn thing with their physique, either for just looking jacked or actually stepping on a stage. I have deleted my last YT because I believe my behavior in it was inappropriate but I am getting increasingly steamed over this. It’s not that ultimately bodybuilding is such a damn important endeavors in the grand scheme of things. Though it can be relatively inexpensive as a natural competitor. I mean, how expensive is oatmeal, rice, tuna, chicken, some veggies, and fruits, nuts and so on or a 30 to 40 buck gym membership for a middle class dude? BUT… for those like you and I who’ve done it at least once and experience the insanity of it all, I think these smart alecks should step off a bit. They can fuck around and move info from point A to point B and wiseass on forums and theorize all they want. The fact is they were never really about this whole hardcore thing, and I say that within the context of the pastime, nothing more and certainly nothing more than serious life stuff.

Can you imagine where BBing would be if these guys were the physiques in the magazines back in the day, spouting off about this-study and a that-study etc…

It would have been DOA, and yet back then there were no studies. All you had was your physique and the methods you used to attain it. So its quite asinine to assert that they don’t work well (optimally is a different story, which I think is where so much of the hype comes from. “Sure your program works… But could you DOUBLE YOUR GAINZ!! with this one weird trick?”)

Honestly I’m no greek God myself (I placed 6’th out of 15 in my show, so lets call me right about average in terms of BBers), which is largely why I have kind of retreated from giving advice out unless I see someone asking about something I have done personally, or I see them asking about something that is clearly wrong or dangerous.

Hope to have episode #16 up in a couple of days. Recorded last night at the home of the incomparable Ron Noreman. With Arash back from the Prep (Dead?), it was an awesome night of stories, arguments (uh,… discussions -lol), and sushi. Difficult to stay on topic at times because we had already been going for a couple of hours before we ever hit Record

This is a good one: “Retirement and Comebacks”

Do you guys have an episode where you detail your training history? Things like beginnings, competitive history, training style and evolution through the years?

Maybe its been up there but I cant remember. Arash in particular would be fun (for me… I know you and Stu well enough from the boards over the years)

Edit: actually this latest one has a fair amount of this info

This is the sort of shape Ron used to get in. He’s a long time family friend and a close friend of my uncle’s since 1976. And he was Kai Green’s actual nutritionist.

Mas Macros #17: The legal and ethical implications of steroid use

Legal expert, and former competitive bodybuilder and actor Rick Collins joins us as we discuss the legal and ethical ramifications of performance enhancing drug use in sports and bodybuilding, in the U.S. and in other Countries.

This was a really fascinating topic that we tried to not get into personal opinions about while we were talking!

I am in agreement with this. Thanks and keep it up!

I dont get it… I listened to this podcast and steroids are still illegal. What gives?

I actually think this will be the case essentially forever. I mean, what politician is going to say “We should legalize steroids” as part of their pitch to the public? I kind of wish we had a slightly different system so people werent so preoccupied with getting reelected. Someone might actually be willing to do something bold

Oh man, between humans greed for money and greed for power, we really do shoot ourselves in the foot!

I confess, I don’t know who the dude is that is holding the shirt.

Rick Collins, probably currently best known for his legal work in the bodybuilding world. He always has a two page spread and Q&A in Muscular Development. Great podcast!

Don’t forget that he was also The Toxic Avenger and a few other Troma film characters back in the day

He was interviewed on here a long time ago.

He’s the legal adviser to the IFBB and was featured in the documentary Bigger Faster Stronger.

Since the Olympia is coming up, here’s a relevant topic.
