I’ve now seen it!
Some SPOILERY stuff, so beware!
I SAID SPOILERY STUFF COMING UP!
First: Do not envy me for having seen it…I’ve seen it so now must envy you that have yet to.
That may be a little strong but the movie was very good.
It started a little slow, in that the first 45 minutes is the assembling of the team, but there’s such great interactions between all the characters (and in so many combinations) that it’s still great to watch.
Who needs to see a comedy movie when action movies like this provide so many times where you laugh so hard you get a bit of a headache? I mean there’s parts where you laugh because of something so cool if you know what I mean. (I don’t want to ruin anything but Hulk provides at least three of these incredible laughs in the movie)
Also the Hulk looked great. I like the way he looks more like the Ang Lee version as we all know, but you get to see his face a bit more in this movie and it’s very well done. They also power him back up to the Ang Lee movie level as I think he didn’t seem to be as strong in the Ed Norton movie.
I also think that they DIDN’T show all the stuff in the trailer! Nice! Most all of the trailer stuff is from the big final battle in Manhattan. There were lots of great scenes before that, though the movie doesn’t really have a huge action scene except for the huge one at the end. Not that there isn’t action, but it consists of Iron Man VS Thor and Hulk VS Thor and if you wanted to see Mjolnir strike Cap’s shield you get it and if you want to see Hulk try to pick up Mjolnir you get that too.
The end battle scene is great in that it seems well-orchestrated and not just a huge Goddamned mess like the end of Transformers (ALL of them!) and it goes on the for the appropriate amount of time…not insanely mind-numbingly drawn out and not over in 5 minutes. Just great ( and I base all final battles against Superman II’s which I saw in the theater at age 8.
It’s even nice that they don’t make you wait till the end of the entire credits to give you the post-credits scene…you just need to wait till they list the main characters.
I never read the Avengers comic book growing up but my buddy that came with me did and he said it was very true to the comics in many ways.
One thing is that for some people it may be awkward to see Iron Man in a movie with Norse gods and a big green guy and all that but they crack the right jokes to let you settle in and accept it all. I don’t want to give jokes away as they’re so good.
I think Black Widow got a tad too much screen time. Sure she’s pretty, but her and Hawkeye, in my opinion, should have been told to stay on the flying fortress during the big battle, what I mean is I got a bit of that feeling like in the Transformers when Sam is running around with buildings collapsing everywhere and they don’t get hurt.So you feel like they could have given a minute or two more to Captain America or Hulk in the final battle and not Hawkeye ( I really don’t even know who he is…I think from just being a geek like I am that he wears a purple owl mask in the comics) or Black Widow. The general public do not know who they are either. Though they of course know Scarlett Johanssen.
