Great to see you back and keep the videos coming, I’m watching them a lot and learning lots from them.
Thanks.

Thanks Brett. I’m glad you find the videos useful.
Training 4/26/2011
Knee Paused Snatch: 50x3, 55x3, 60x3, 65x3, 70x3, 75x3, 80x2/3, 83x1/3, 83x1//3
Think I should be staying with 80 for multiple sets on these, that’s where things start to break down. On the missed reps, I had trouble getting the center of mass to stay back towards my heels.
5/3/1 C3 W1 Squats
94x5
101x5
107x5 These were harder today than they should have been.
RDLs: (90x6)3
How far back on your heels do you aim for your weight to be? As far back as you can without falling over backwards or not quite as far back as that? Think I’m having some trouble getting it moving back from the floor… I have been lifting more weight, but not terribly convinced that I’m getting any better ![]()
I’m not really sure, since this idea is fairly new to me. I get the idea that its almost impossible to get it too far back. In practice, I’ve been able to get it back far enough that I would fall over under static conditions once. I ended up jumping back slightly in the catch, but overhead was very stable and getting under was very quick.
Finally got the HG videos ready.
My wife was working the camera. She got there after hammer and HWFD, and had to leave before WOB, so there’s no video of those events.
Light Weight for Distance
Braemar Stone
Open Stone
Caber
Great vids Carl. Thanks for posting them
Awesome vids, Carl. That first caber toss looked pretty close to straight on?
For someone who couldn’t be bothered to get there on time, and had better things to do so couldn’t stay (just kidding of course), your wife sounded pretty into it!
Very cool highland vids.
thanks.
Damn Carl, that caber toss was outstanding.
Thanks Wilson, you are quite welcome.
Punnyguy, they gave me a 10:30 on that one. It looked more like 11 or 11:30 to me, but it seems like I always overestimate my scores on these. Yes, my wife is very enthusiastic when I can get her to show up.
Thanks Kevin.
Thanks Joe, but its a little deceptive. That thing was a pencil, 18’ long but only 65 lbs.
Training 4/29/2011
Clean and Jerk: (all power cleans, still trying to let the knee recover.)
60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 85x1, 90x1, 95x1, (101x1)5
Snatch Grip Deadlifts: (90x5)3
nice to see the footage from the games. i didn’t know what kinds of events there were. when you do clean grip deadlifts or first pulls or whatever is the idea to get the weight to move using your legs without it rolling back into your shins (like a deadlift would)? i’m used to deadlifting starting with the bar against my shins (Ripptoe style) but when the weight gets heavier with the clean ones the bar wants to roll back into my shins before leaving the ground. not sure if i should just let it or put the weight down until i’m strong enough to get it moving without rolling back.
hope your knee feels better soon.
loved the games videos, congrats on turning the pole.
Thanks alexus. There are three events that I didn’t get video of, hammer, weight over bar, and sheaf toss. I’ll try to get some footage of those at the next games in late June.
I’m not sure what to say about the dead lifts. As you have probably seen, I usually roll the back back a bit before the weight leaves the platform. Ideally this doesn’t happen, and like you, I’m uncertain what to do about it–ignore it, try to stop it, or change the setup so that it doesn’t happen. Right now I’m ignoring it and just trying to get the bar path better.
Thanks John. It might have been a pencil but I did turn it. A competition first.
well, you have turned more cabers in competition than I have…
ah, no i didn’t realize that happened for you. i thought it might have been just me. i guess if it doesn’t roll back then it has more room to come back once it leaves the floor (maybe it is the difference between it swinging back as soon as it leaves vs not swinging back until a bit later)? but i don’t know. the swinging thing doesn’t make much sense to me, yet, but more sense than it used to. since it didn’t make sense to me at all before. sigh. getting there, i suppose.
Carl, what are your thoughts on doing snatch high pulls?.
Now that I’m getting close to trying to drop under what is my current best for a power snatch (it’s obviously higher now, but I’m trying not to do them anymore) I seem to be having confidence issues, doubting my ability to get under a weight I haven’t snatched higher than chest height before.
Can doing high pulls be justified to convince myself that I can physically get the bar high enough or do I just need to ‘man up’ and get brave and try getting under it? Thanks.
I’ve been MIA for a while Carl. Just went back over your thread. Outstanding games. Really interested in the way you did the open stone, I’ve never been able to get the full rotation. Congrats on turning the caber. Once you get past that first time it like lifting a mental block and they start coming regularly.

This you will love.
Alexus, the quickest way for both you and me to improve our lifts is to get bigger squats. All the agonizing about technique is relatively minor, at least at this point, for both of us. I know that will never happen with either of us. Agonizing about technique is the fun part. So keep it up, enjoy it, and try to pay enough attention to getting stronger.
Brett, snatch high pulls will probably not help much for learning how to get under a lift. Improving shoulder mobility, drop snatches, ohs, lifts from the hang or blocks, and continuously attempting heavier weights will.
Thanks Harry. I did open stone with a half spin. I might stick with that even when my hamstring allows full spins because its more consistent, and so far on grass, gives almost as good results as full spins do.
Been lifting and throwing the past two weeks as normal, but have been too busy to post. Today’s snatches, 11 singles at 89 are in the video. My knee is slowly improving, the hamstring is still keeping me from getting a full hamstring stretch on the pulls, and is holding back squats and deadlifts a little, but otherwise is ok.

yeah, i know you are right. about my squats anyway. having trouble standing up snatches.
nice snatches. glad you aren’t too(oo) injured, but sorry to hear you have some discomforts.
