alexus, isn’t it past your bedtime?
literally or metaphorically?
Literally. I saw 3:03pm pacific time as the time of the post and thought it must be pretty late (or maybe very early) for you. I thought when I posted that of its potential for misinterpretation. You are always welcome here any time.
Interesting discussion on back angle. I’ve been watching a lot of snatch videos recently where the back angles were very horizontal, so much so that I’ve been trying to get more horizontal. Glad I read your answer. I won’t bother trying to change it then.
Brett, I think someone with a disproportionately strong back could get away with a more horizontal back angle.
More silly thoughts on back angle. First, I realized that one previous statement I made – that more work is done in the lower stage of the first pull when the back is more vertical – is mostly nonsense. Getting the bar to the knees requires the same work no matter how you get it there. The only difference would be work done on body parts, which is probably marginally higher for a more vertical back than with a more horizontal back.
However, I did think of another advantage to a less horizontal back – it allows for lower hips when the second pull position is reached. With a more vertical back with the bar at the knees, the hips must be lower. Hips lower at that point makes it likely the hips will be lower at the start of the second pull. So knees must be more bent, giving you more leg drive on the second pull.
Carl, How do you rate snatch grip deadlifts as an exercise for improving the snatch?. I’m trying to do them as explosively as I can, exactly as if I was trying to snatch them, although obviously because of the weight I can only get them to my waist. What’s your opinion please?
It was 10.30am (GMT +10 hours). Can be a bit sensitive sometimes lol - sorry about that. Bit lost on the back angle thing, truth be told, but does feel better to not be so horizontal, I think. Still working on hip drive…
Brett, I do them and think I get a lot of good out of them. However, strength is my weak point as opposed to power. In any case, if you are doing them to help with snatch, its important to do them as much like a snatch as possible. Go light enough so that you can hit the same positions that you want to hit in the 1st pull of a snatch. At least for me, I think that’s more important than doing them explosively. On the other hand, doing them explosively is a good thing too.
Alexus, the fault is mine. My ignorance and carelessness caused a problem. I thought Oz was closer to GMT +6 and even so, didn’t stop to do the math. On the back angle thing, look at DaCharmingAlbino’s latest snatch drill video. In my mind this is close to perfect back angle. Any more vertical and he would have to get his shoulders behind instead of over or in front of the bar. Then look at PBAndy’s snatches. His snatches look pretty good, but as he is aware, his rear raises too fast in relation to his shoulders and his back ends up too horizontal.
Kind of a blah week in training.

Snatch: 50x2, 60x2, 70x1, 80x1, (86x1)5, 91x0,1,0,0,0,1,1,1,0,1, 94x0,1, 90x0,0 weight was going high enough, but something was off, missed most in front, but one behind.
Snatch with pause at knee: 60x1, 70x2, 75x0,1, 80x0,1,1, 85x0,1,1,0,0,0 all misses in front. Can’t get the damn video off the camera to see what I was doing wrong.
Now for my weekly reward–go down to town and throw.
you don’t have to apologize - i can be supersensitive sometimes. figured i was being but thought it would be better to err that way rather than the other. i’ll take a look at the snatch vids, thanks for that. sorry you had a crappy training week. hope your throwing went better.
Lifting is look fine. I wanted to stop in and say you were 100% right about my DL’s at the meet. I was so amp up that I wasn’t worried about them at all and they just flew up.
Thanks Joe. Good job at the meet. I’m glad it went as I thought it would.
Ok Alexus, I’ll quit worrying about it. Throwing went very well, thanks.
Throwing 2/12/2011
6kg shot: 5 stands, 5 half spins, 37 full throws. Need to keep over and really crank the right foot better on the stands and half spins. Do better at this on the full throws, but need to quit over rotating out of the back, and really pop my hips and get my chest up at the end. Best of just under 48’.
LWFD: 11 two turn throws. Do better at these when I slow down and relax. Best of 52’1", two inches from a pr.
WOB: 4 with 36 lb weight, 2 with 39lb weight, 5 with 42 lb weight. Two of these cleared the 12ft branch by a good margin, might have gone over at 13’. Fist time the spin felt ok with 42 lbs.
Sprints, 30mx8, 100mx1, 15.95s on the 100, so till damn slow, but got the last 30m in at 4.46, my best in a long time.
Throwing looks about as technically difficult as Oly Lifting. And fun, too.
Ever throw one of those things into the windshield of a car in the adjoining parking lot?
throws are looking awesome carl.
Outstanding throwing. Looks like you’re getting good at the spin on the wob. Still haven’t got around to that. Shirtless in Febuary. Sweet.
you get a hair cut or something?
Throws looked outstanding. I need to get back to the sprinting and seld sprinting.
Can I copy your shot put spin for throwing the open stone, or do you throw the stone a little differently?
Alexus, throwing, or at least some of the throws are every bit as technical as o-lifting. I’d say hammer (t&f style) is the most difficult thing I’ve ever tried to do athletically. Haircut? I have a feeling that if I understood that it would be funny.
Not yet Snapper. I did put one out in the street once though. Quit throwing hammer there after that.
Thanks John, a work in progress, but its coming along nicely. And feel free to copy the spin. I use a spin for open stone, but don’t drive off the left foot out of the back as hard as for shot. Maybe some cleats would help with that.
Thanks Harry. My WOB for distance (they go almost as far as HWFD) is coming along. The keys for getting it to work so far have been a relatively horizontal cast and lead a lot with the right shoulder and leg. I think if I can keep my weight back over my right leg after the turn and get the leg bent more I’ll start to see better results.
Thanks Joe. Sprinting is good.
