What everyone else said. Great video! Looked really smooth and had some sort of zen feel to it.
Thanks Harry. You’ve already done more than most would have believed possible. Who knows what else you’ll be able to work your way to. I was pretty pleased with the LWFD too. Everything went right on that throw.
Jack, I play those videos for my gangbanger students sometimes. Especially when they get a little impertinent. It seems to calm them down a bit and teach them a little respect for an old man. They tend to wait until they are out of my class to have their fights. Thanks for the compliments.
Thanks Skip. I never thought of it that way. I do get very deep into the visualization before I approach the bar.
And now, one of my favorite musicians, the vocalist is Mike Patton if you don’t recognize him. This shows a little bit of his range.
Excellent lift - and that was your 21st clean and jerk of that session( if I counted correctly) - looked like there was more left in the tank!
Thanks NewWorldMan. I might be good for 110 right now if I got to it more directly. Here’s the scheme I’m currently using on C&J:
warmups
X for 5 singles
(X+5) for 2 singles
(X+7.5) for 2 singles
(X+10) for 2 singles
(X+12.5) for 2 singles
(X+15) for 2 singles, although if I have no misses by this point, I go up by 1-2.5 for my final attempt.
If I miss an attempt, I repeat the same weight until I get two successes. After two misses (total for the session) I’m supposed to stop, although I often break this rule. If I get through this with no more than one miss, X increases by 1-1.5 for the next week.
I do this once a week with power cleans and hang cleans done another day. It has given slow but steady and stable increases. By stable increases, I mean that I rarely have a day where I miss lifts until one of the last two weights.
Carl, that is some serious work. and a beautiful c&j I might add.
What is your current goal for the c&j? you were saying that you might be good for 110kg, but do you have a solid poundage goal with a date?
Thats damn fine lifting Carl, slow and steady is the way to go.
Thanks John, Joe. No fixed goal on the C&J. I’m hoping to get back to a competitive level by the end of March. National Masters is the first week of April. Michael Harada, same age and weightclass as me, just put in a 225kg total to win the American Masters. He would have been at 229 if he made his final attempts. If I can at least give him a decent competition, I’ll go. That gives me 4.5 months to add 25+ kgs to my total.
Trianing 11/17/2010
Power Cleans: 60x5, 70x5, (75x5)3
High Hang Cleans: (75x3)3
5/3/1 C6 W2 Military:
52x3
55x3
58x6
67x0 Still can’t get this after 3 weeks!!!
Dips:(BW+5)x6,6,6
Lat Pull Downs: 160lbsx10,10,10 Up this to 170 next week. When I get 180x10,10,10 I’ll switch to pullups.
Just found out my time for lifting tomorrow is cut in half, so I did snatches today. No pop at the end of the pull, which I’ll blame on 4 consecutive days of o-lifts. Anyway here’s what I did:
Snatch 50x2, 60x2, 70x1, (77.5x1)5, 82.5x0,1,1,1,1,1, 85x0,1,1,1,1,0,0,1, 87.5x1,0,1, 90x0,0
On most of my misses (all were in front), I noticed a strange counterclockwise twisting. My right foot would be forward, my left way back. On the good lifts there was little or no twist. WTF!
What is your snatch PR?
Are you going to post some vids of your snatches soon?
I am going to start doing some snatches again as a warm up when my elbows are fully healed. Any tips on how to pull myself under the bar? I seem to pull the bar overhead and THEN drop into a squat. Just can’t get the hang of it.
Right now my PR is the 92.5 I got last Friday. I’ve been up to 110 2 years ago and 117.5 about 8 years ago. I do video the snatches from time to time. It was supposed to be today but the camera was out of power. I guess next Friday.
On pulling under the bar, eliminate arm involvement until the knees and hips have extended. Once your get full extension, immediately pull yourself under the bar as hard as possible. The timing on this is the critical point. It happens a lot sooner than you might feel. The timing on the extension is important too. It happens a lot later than you might feel. It kind of wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, GO!! The waits are all pulling the weight from the floor to your hips the GO is explosively extending knees and hips and then immediately pulling under. I hope that makes sense.

A perfect description. I still can’t do it.
Training 11/19/2010
5/3/1 Snatch Deadlifts
101x3
107x3
113x7
126x1, (101x5)3
Leg Lifts 12,12,13
As weak as I felt yesterday, that’s how strong I felt today. Everything was easy.
Great work. I still have no idea what you do, but it looks damned impressive.
I would say that there are too many explosive/jerky movements for someone my age…but I am younger than you. So I will just go with “I am too fat to do it.” Yes, I know that the Oly lifters can be really big. Leave me to my delusions, please. I am content to just watch and be in awe.
i tried to do snatch-grip deadlifts once. I couldn’t do it with 100kg. very humbling experience. Now I pretend that they don’t exist.
John, I actually kinda like them. Its one day I do deadlifts when the weight is not crushing.
Training 11/22/2010
Clean and Jerk: 60x2, 70x2, 80x1, 90x1, (95x1)5, (97.5x1)2, (100x1)2, (102.5x1)2, 105x0,1,0 There were the two allowed misses, first miss, pushed the jerk out front, second–perfect, third, pulled the clean too far back and ended up on my ass. Never made it to 107.5.
5/3/1 C6 W3 Bench:
65x5
74x3
83x2
88x1, (70x5)3 Not bad, still improving by ~2kg every 3 weeks.
DB rows: (75x10)3 Cheating a bit on these, pulling my shoulder up at the bottom and back down at the top. Will stay at this weight next week and try to make them better.

holy dumbbell rows batman! 75 kg for sets of 10!
but your dumbbells must be in pounds, yes? just the bumper plates in KG…
Yes dog, sadly enough, db rows are in pounds.
That last video is simply amazing. I have so much respect for Oly lifters. The choreography (for lack of a better word) of the lifts is so beautiful to me.
I’d like to get back to doing cleans. Maybe even from the floor. But I’m terribly scared with my shoulder. Guess I could start with a broomstick?
Thanks Snapper. Broomstick sounds good until the shoulder can hit the right positions solidly. There’s nothing to loose.
Training 11/23/2010
Power Snatch: 50x5, 60x5, (64x5)4
High Hang Snatch: (64x3)4
5/3/1 C66 W3 Squats:
86x5
98x3
109x6
118x1, 125x1
Front Squats: (92x5)3
Back Raises: BW+20kgx9,9,9
The snatches were easy but tiring, the squats were hard, but strong.
