Maple Syrup Strength (littlesleeper)

Rest day today, so I decided to finally make a couple strongman implements.

Materials:
1.9"OD x .188 wall thickness - 24’ length
6x 1 7/8 Split ring collars
Chain, Gate Hinges, Bolts/Nuts, Snap Hooks
Turned into:
7’ Axle
7’ Chain Yoke with Loading Pins
2x 5’ Farmers Walk Implements (Still need to buy 4x 1.9" Pipe Hangers for the 3/8" threaded rod I have and buy my actual handles)
I also have a large canvas bag now, so I’ll be filling that with sand or gravel - Planning to start around 150lbs.

That is awesome!!! I’m sure there are things on the farm I could use to build me so implements.

Thanks! I’m sure there is…it seems most farms have a decent collection of scrap metal kicking around!

I thought about doing some carries with the tractor weights :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: and for the record I can spell and make sentences but my freakin phone doesn’t like me!!!

You’re in a judgement free zone here! My typing skills can vary from relatively intellectual, to straight up child-like…all depends on laziness/how rushed I am/if I’m tired/if I’m hungry/if I’m multi-tasking etc. :writing_hand:

Well the program hopper in me is at it again. Brian (Alpha) just released a video on programming for strongman so I’ll be less following a specific program, more gearing my workouts around Brian’s tips. Sunday I did the following:

STRENGTH - Heavy
Deadlift [PR 565]
135 x 3
225 x 3
315 x 3
405 x 3
455 x 1
505 x 1
555 x 1 ← A bit of a grind
505 x 1
455 x 3
455 x 3

Great round of deadlifts, with some decent volume at a decent weight.

ASSISTANCE -Medium
RDL with Axle
115 x 12
165 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10
185 x 10

Hamstring Curls
40 x 10
40 x 10
40 x 10

Glute/Ham Raises
5
5

STRONGMAN - Light
Axle Continental Clean and Press
75 x 2
125 x 2
145 x 2
145 x 2

So these could have been a little lighter and I should have done a few more reps/set (3-5 for speed), but my shoulder is still bothering me so two per set I felt like was enough to get some technique going.
This was my first time EVER touching a strongman axle (homemade), and EVER attempting a continental clean and press, so there is definitely going to be a learning curve with this one. 145lbs felt heavy on the transition…the OHP wasn’t an issue.

175 x 2
175 x 2
This is another first timer for me here. These felt good, other than the nagging pain in my right shoulder.
I feel like these are going to really force the core stability and should translate well to my OHP.

Supersetting these started taking a toll on my right shoulder, so I put these to rest and saved the pain for my strongman exercise.

STRONGMAN - Medium
Hydrant Pickup? (Intended to mimic the movement of stones for now - I really need to weight the hydrant)

See video, this seemed to tax the lower back and the lungs nicely.

Overall, felt like I put in some good work today. I can’t wait until this shoulder is pain free again.
During my workout I was performing band shoulder dislocates and band pullaparts between sets as well.

Here is a little video, so everyone can see what I was talking about with the hydrant pickups!

Awesome!!! I was going to ask if you were posting videos anymore. I enjoy seeing what you come up with

Ya, between me not being efficient at editing video footage and my computer/internet taking 30+mins to upload a 2min video I don’t tend to post videos much! But they definitely add a bit to the dry text of a workout log.

Whew, those three sets of 325 x 10 was no walk in the park for me. That had the entire body working to move that weight. Definitely need to work on this higher rep work as it seems to be a weakness. I’m glad this programming will address this!

This work only took ~40mins. I went outside to do some tire flipping. I flipped it a couple times and realized I had no ideo what any of my strongman stuff weighed. So I came inside grabbed my scale and empty sandbag and went back out. Here are the weights of the random implements I have back there:
Fire hydrant: 155lbs
Tractor Tire: 185lbs (I really need to try and get my hands on a larger one)
Large culligan water container: 34lbs
4" Slosh Pipe (10’long): 45lbs
Empty Keg (I plan on filling this as needed for different weeks/events): 28lbs
Small Sandbag (I have been using as load for tire sled): 82lbs
Large military sandbag (filled using extra topsoil I had from excavating for my back deck): 185lbs

I guess my strongman was carrying each of these items to the scale, filling the sandbag and carrying it around my backyard. Overall it was a good active evening, and I know I’ll be feeling those squats tomorrow!

That’s soooo awesome!!! Oh and we have a huge tractor tire on the farm… I’m pretty sure shipping might cost a lot though :nerd:
Now stop making a boring log like mine and post some videos or pictures of your playground!

Lol, my backyard looks more like a junkyard!

Seriously though you look really great in the video you posted a while back with the fire hydrant! Your one of the best I’ve seen on here. (not trying to be weird just honest)
I also like your choice of music… I’ve heard people post weird slow stuff and I can’t believe that’s what gets them going.

Haha, thanks my music taste is all over the map. I will listen to almost anything, but yes while working out it needs to be up beat to keep the intensity up!
What I listen to depends if it my wife’s iPod or mine plugged into the sound system when I step into the weight room!

Went outside to build the remainder of my farmers was handles and apparently my drill press did not want to drill holes through my 1" steel pipe handles. So, now I need some additional hardware before these are complete.
Did not end up doing any other strongman work today. Tomorrow I plan on doing some tire flips and sled drags.
