Maple Syrup Strength (littlesleeper)

Thanks Sven! Oddly enough, I’ve had a few occurrences of what I thought was going to be a hernia over the course of my lifting career. More of an obvious, quick pain during a lift followed by a burning/tingling sensation. But they never seemed to develop into anything worth looking into.
This seemingly just popped up. My hip flexor bothered me for a couple days after travelling, then a deadlift workout was the last workout before the swelling occurred, but there was no obvious point where I realized I had hurt/injured something.
Hopefully we will find out more with the ultrasound. I also booked in some blood work to cover my bases, as it has been a couple of years since my last one.

Leaving this here for my own reference, plan on trying out these movements to help my hip pain.

Yesterday I went through the 3 moves in the above video during two small sessions, and I could actually feel muscle soreness in my glute medius this morning. That third movement really lit up my glute med. I’m not sure that it actually helped with the pain after day 1, but I wasn’t expecting an instant fix.

DAY 2 (+50lbs)
10 Swings, Dip 2 reps
15 Swings, Dip 4 reps
25 Swings, Dip 6 reps
50 Swings

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5/Total
5m40s 12m30s 20m15s 30m 39m25s

This was a tough one. Our oldest is very sick right now, and not sleeping very well. My wife and I are both coming down with it now as well. Her symptoms started yesterday and are much worse today, my symptoms are just starting today so I made sure to get a workout in today, in case I feel like she does tomorrow.

My hips don’t love the swings, but if I find the right foot width and toe angle it doesn’t hurt too much, but the least painful foot placement seems to change each set!

Daily hip work continues. More banded distraction and soft tissue work in the area. Maybe seeing some small improvements?

DAY 4 CYCLE 2 (100lbs)
10 Swings, Goblet Squat 1 rep
15 Swings, Goblet Squat 2 reps
25 Swings, Goblet Squat 3 reps
50 Swings

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5/Total
4m41s 11m10s 18m10s 26m50s 41m15s

If I use my glutes as the primary movers for the swings, my left hip has some grinding/popping sounds followed by discomfort. So I shift the work to my lower back, no pain, but boy what a pump.

A lovely interruption by my 3 year extended my last round of work. “Daddy, what doing?” He wanted to join in my workout, so I set him up a little mat where he did a few pushups on push handles, 3lb DB OHP, 3lb goblet squats, and red mini band rows. One round of that and he left the weight room, “Daddy, come play with me.”

My wife, two kids and I all seem to have the same cold/flu. Fever coming and going, bad cough, and stuffed/runny nose. FitBit tells me I got a little over 4hrs of interrupted sleep last night which has seemed like the average for the past few days. A lot of sad coughing kids throughout the night keeping Mom and Dad up as well. I’m glad I was finally able to sneak in a workout today.

So the doctor diagnosed me with Lyme disease and communicated that this list of issues I’ve been experiencing is very likely linked to it. I’m on a 21-day cycle of antibiotics which will hopefully clear this up for me.

On another note, CT’s “Metcon for Muscle” program has me intrigued…

I know liking a post that says “I got lyme disease” seems uncool, but I have to celebrate the beautiful psychosis that follows up “I got lyme disease” with “so anyway, this really challenging program has my interest”.

You are definitely on my kickball team for the apocalypse dude.

Haha, thanks Pwn. That is a huge compliment coming from you!

I actually was oddly happy to hear I had Lyme disease (as long as it doesn’t do any permanent damage). This means: Likely no hernia and I didn’t just “get old” overnight and start randomly experiencing so many aches and pains!

Not so glad for that, but…

Very glad for this!

Yikes! Good luck, man. I’m sure it’s better to at least know what’s going on (as you actually said below; I’m Captain Obvious today).

Same! I haven’t done a CT program in a long while, but always got a ton out of them. This one is so far different than what I’ve been doing that I think it would be really valuable.

@SvenG - Much appreciated, I’m taking this ailment to be the lesser of the evils!

@TrainForPain - Thanks! After I get through the remainder of these KB workouts, I may give the posted 2 weeks a test run. I’m not sure if he is going to publicly post the remaining weeks or if they will just be for the folks who purchased supps. Either way, I’ll get a good idea of that style of workouts. I actually had the Surge kit in my cart, but the old coupon code from Colucci doesn’t work anymore. Shipping for the supps ends up being $100CAD.

Also, congrats to many of my T Nation “friends” (can I call you friends?) for becoming Member Coaches and/or moderators! I’m happy you didn’t get too big to come to visit my log, lol.

I was a little absent from this workout. During a few sets of swings I drifted off in my train of thought and when I came back to the number I was counting I was 10+ swings over the number prescribed for the set. These workouts are far from easy, but are a little boring/repetitive, and do not require a level of focus like many other programs/exercises out there do, IMO.

DAY 5 CYCLE 2 (+35lbs on chinups)
10 Swings, Chin-up 1 rep
15 Swings, Chin-up 2 reps
25 Swings, Chin-up 3 reps
50 Swings

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5/Total
5m50s 12m40s 20m10s 29m15s 37m20s

I’m going to increase my workout frequency to get through this program more quickly.

I do have an out-of-town wedding and a week-long vacation planned for later this month, so some wrenches are already being thrown. I may even take a KB with me to the cottage we are going to and do a modified version of the KB workouts.

Sorry to hear you weren’t great, but really good to see you have a diagnosis and a treatment plan. Can’t wait to see you back to your best. After all if you aren’t jacked and strong as a bull who else am I going to try to chase down.

I’m not one to get too worked up about the possible side effects (my wife gets plenty worried for the both of us), but reading some of the Lyme disease symptoms did make me stop and think “Hmm, this is actually kind of serious”. We have so many ticks around here, and I have pulled 20+ out of my skin over the years. So I suppose I became a little numb to the possibility of them actually giving me Lyme disease.

:+1:

Haha, well every time I pop in your log I see someone who I need to try and chase down!

Only thing I am ahead of you on is age… LOL Seriously though, get well mate.

A few extended rounds by having to run up and soothe our son back to sleep. Poor little man has a cold which has been waking him up more frequently during his naps.

The presses felt heavy today. I guess still not a terrible day of pressing for me, as in a lot of my other pressing workouts I wouldn’t be hitting 195lbs for 30 total reps.

DAY 1 CYCLE 3 (Press 195lbs)
10 Swings, Press 1 rep
15 Swings, Press 2 reps
25 Swings, Press 3 reps
50 Swings

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5/Total

DAY 2 CYCLE 3 (+50lbs for dips)
5 Rounds of:
10 Swings, Dip 2 reps
15 Swings, Dip 4 reps
25 Swings, Dip 6 reps
50 Swings

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5/Total
5m30s 11m10s 16m30s 23m10s 28m50s

Made decent time on my first round, and had no reason to stop and take a breath…so I decided instead to put the pedal down. I crushed my last week’s time by over 10 minutes on this workout. No hip pain, lungs did not limit my effort, and I just felt good during it. Believe it or not, this is a big workout win for me as it has been a while since I’ve had a workout I can feel a little proud about.

My work capacity/cardio has been feeling much better, noticeable outside of the weight room as well. I just find myself running places more often now because I can, lol. I’m not talking long distances, but over to my Dad’s house (~100yards) or to the chicken coop (~40yds). It feels good to be able to hold a conversation after some minor physical exertion. I’m kettlebell swinging the powerlifter right out of my body, haha.

I had my end of the year lob-ball tournament yesterday. We lost our first game with the winning run on base and won our next two to win the ‘B’ championship.

The humidity has dropped and the temps have been going down to 15C at nights which has been a nice relief and break for the A/C.

A fun/busy day with the kids today but I am going to try and fit in a workout later today. My sister-in-law is staying at our place for a few days and sleeping in our basement. The basement bedroom is still unfinished (no drywall, just studs - scheduled to be finished in the next month or so) and is right next to my also unfinished weight room. This makes early morning or late night workouts awkward as I would be 10’ from where she is sleeping while working out, lol. She isn’t on the “I have kids” sleep schedule.

I wasn’t feeling great coming into this one (underslept and a few adult beverages last night). Ended up with a PR on my time to complete the workout. Managed to sneak in some meal prep today as well, pics to follow.

DAY 4 CYCLE 3 (100lbs)
5 Rounds of:
10 Swings, Goblet Squat 1 rep
15 Swings, Goblet Squat 2 reps
25 Swings, Goblet Squat 3 reps
50 Swings

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4 Round 5/Total
4m 9m 14m45s 22m 26m55s

The lower back pump was quite intense during this workout. The goblet squats add to the lower back pump between rounds of swings. A good workout overall, much better than anticipated.
