Friendly thoughts from a guy who lifts way, way less than you:
All my dudes get sick when they lift too heavy. You’re missing lots of ME lifts and you’re getting sick.
Instead of making that last jump 50 pounds and missing, jump 20 pounds and make the lift. Ideally make the last lift with a little left over for next time. Think of it more like a meet. Big misses do nothing. Small jumps to 3rds you can make add to your total.
Grab those Inzer Power Pants. Even if you just wear them on your toughest DE days, or when you use the most wide/extreme stances. If your groin/hips are where the problems are most likely to Pop up, protect them.
I have the same issue if I have a typical weekend lol. What I’ve been doing recently is like 3x10 of back squats at 225with like 60 second rest on Sunday. These seems to be enough and quick enough to get my body “awake” for Monday’s lower session.
I’ve been told by many recent parents that your sick days are no longer your sick days, lol. So I figured I would tough it out! I’m a big baby when I get a “man-cold”, but I put my big boy pants on yesterday and made it through alright.
Great explanation! My setup was exactly how you explained it. I wasn’t rolled forward though, I would say that my chest was quite open still (top hand on my hip). I could see how the TFL could engage and take some work, so I’ll try your technique next time. I was definitely feeling the glutes work too which was good, but always looking for tips for improved efficiency.
Haha, I have 6 sick days. I mean I could abuse our benefits and start tapping into my “Short Term Sickness Plan” which is a larger number of days at a specific % of our wage. But then I’m on an attendance management protocol, doctors notes required, etc., etc..
I would say that it would be ~1-2" above parallel, which seems to be a very awkward height for me to get any real strength applied to the bar. I typically use a 14" box height which is ~1-2" below parallel and I honestly feel stronger shooting up out of the hole, than I did yesterday at this height (this could also be because I am fighting a cold, legs were still sore, etc.).
I agree. I need to check my ego at the door. BUT I LOVE MAX EFFORT WORK. It doesn’t FEEL difficult to me (but I know it takes its toll), as the reps are so low and I’m barely breaking a sweat. DE work feels like I’m digging a lot deeper than the ME work, but I’ve been in the game long enough to know that isn’t the case (CNS, blah blah).
Do you happen to have a pair of them (for a review)? I was also asking around (at least I remember asking Flip) about what pants he uses and he uses the Rehband Warm Pants, so I was thinking about getting a pair of those as well. I’m not sure if they serve different purposes or not though. Inzer may be more actual support, while the Rehband would be more like a knee sleeve, just for warmth? You know if I’m ordering some Power Pants from Inzer, I’ll be scooping up a shirt too…uh oh. Geared lifting here we come…
Yes, and my weekends have been pretty “typical” for the past few weeks unfortunately which really do take their toll on recovery. My coach gives me a hard time every Monday.
Him: “So you drunken little bastard, did you get drunk again this weekend?”
Me: “Not too bad, I think I had 8 tallboys on Saturday night but was home by midnight.”
Him: “You think? What were you too f@#$ing drunk to remember? You know every drunken night will set you back a week in recovery.”
Me: “Well, …uhm…sorry?”
I do need to get better on my weekends, and I appreciate the lecture I get from him.
I think you’re right about the Inzer(supportive) vs Rehband(warming).
I’d totally recommend the Power Pants. They’re cheap, like half the price of the blue guys and they last forever. Mine are like 15 years old.
If you squeeze into a tight pair, pull them all the way up and crank your belt down over them they will add pounds to the squat. They are kinda like bionic groin and glutes. Or you can leave them “low” not pulled up and under your belt to get less pop.
Now I’m 20 pounds lighter than I was when I got them, they aren’t as tight and I don’t pull them all the way up my belly so they don’t add much. ( If you want them to fit more chilled out like this, consider going 1 size up.) They just help avoid that super deep down muscle tightness. The one time I hurt myself on ME lower day doing conjugate, I didn’t wear the Power Pants during the previous DE lower workout.
Damn shipping to Canada, and conversion from USD.
$35 pants + $30 shipping = $65USD / 0.75 = $87, gah. I had them all the way to checkout. I’ll try to hunt around the web later tonight and see if any retailers have them with some cheaper shipping costs.
JUST hung up the phone with the corner store up the road, large meat lovers pizza will be ready in 30mins. Picture to follow. I think a whisky will go nicely with this.
No pieces remained for leftovers. My wife and I played darts last night while devouring this pizza. She beat me 2/3 games! We play a game where you have to hit numbers from 20 to 15 three times as well as get 3 bulls eyes, doubles and triples.
Last night was Tuesday in Canada, right? Pizza, whiskey, and darts on a weeknight? What was the occasion?
Sounds like a nice night. My wife and I used to do that type of stuff so the time in the early days of our relationship. We weren’t officially dating for a few weeks and we competed in everything. I miss those days.
Pizza was amazing! Large meat lovers pizza with 4 cans of pop for $22 at a corner store that is about 2 mins down the road.
My wife is extremely competitive, so she was VERY happy to beat me, lol. Last time we played I beat her 3 games to none so she was happy for redemption.
My wife can definitely hold her own for a tiny woman, I think it was 5 for me, 3 for her.
Haha, yes it was a Tuesday in Canada! The occasion was one of two weeknights that I don’t have a workout (so we actually have an entire evening to hang out together), and she is pregnant and wanted pizza (I may have said the “Pizza” word though to initiate the request)! Who am I to argue with that?
We both realize our lives are going to change completely once our little one comes into the world (for the better), but are trying to enjoy some of the small things that may begin to take a back seat once our situation changes. We actually went to go bowling last week one evening, but the place was packed (league night), and plan to still do that again soon as well. That is another sport(?)/activity(?) that her and I are very close in skill level, so it makes for a fun night out.
You don’t have to give up this type of stuff. I think most of us let it go because we get a bit fatigued and just want to sit and relax. My wife canceled date night on Sunday because she just wanted to have one day with nothing planned.
I find it odd that date night causes her stress. It’s relaxing to me but I’m not going to argue with her. She planned a birthday party for Friday night and shouldered that load by herself.
We know we don’t have to, but we likely will for this reason you mentioned. We both thoroughly enjoy our “down time”. We like being able to kick back with a show before bed, and are often more interested in doing that than going out bowling or playing darts.
Right now we just don’t really have enough of an excuse to be lazy, so we are making an effort to do more fun activities.
