Good luck man. Crush some PR’S
Thank you kindly!
Good to know.
I’d guess 5-10lbs. I took them out of training at the beginning of this prep (12 weeks) and I hadn’t actually had them very long before that to know for sure.
Not a bad idea. I’ll take my opener the same and play it by ear.
I should probably read more about powerlifting meets so I know what I’m getting into lol. I currently have very little clue. People have asked me how I’m going to warmup for each lift…I don’t have any idea. I’m picturing like 1 squat rack with 225lbs on it that everyone is trying to get a few reps on, but I’m sure it’s a slightly more organized chaos than that.
Thank you, I’ll update as soon as I can.
Actually…
If you’re weighing in on the day, turn up as early as possible. Stake out your own space. If you can, bring a folding chair. Also anything you may need like a battery pack, esky with ice packs, a gallon of water, food, super glue, sports tape, chalk, etc.
Measure the height from floor to bar in squat and bench rack with a loaded bar to make picking rack and pin heights easier.
Go through your bag a couple of days before and make sure you have everything: soft suit, two pairs of deadlift socks, spare shirt, whatever shoes you need, warmup stuff like bands and rollers, a Leatherman or penknife is a good idea as are pliers and a screwdriver, wraps of whatever kind you need, belt(s), etc.
So I went for my weigh in this morning, 95.6kg (~211lbs). They also had us lift off on the competition bench and squat racks to set our height. Then they checked all of our equipment. My stretchy wrist wraps that I typically use are not allowed, but I had a pair of Titan wrist wraps (that have barely any stretch) and they are allowed. I’ve never used them before, but I’m sure they will be better than nothing.
Also, the elbow sleeves are apparently only allowed for squat and deadlift (not bench) so I won’t bother wearing them as they don’t do anything for me for those lifts.
I managed to forget my singlet, tshirt and I don’t own any underwear that aren’t briefs (which are not allowed) so it looks like I’ll be going commando. Cool.
Openers have been officially set for tomorrow morning at:
Squat: 220.0kg (485lbs)
Bench: 142.5kg (315lbs)
Deadlift: 265.0kg (585lbs)
This would set me up at a 1385lb total with a goal of hitting >1500lbs.
I plan on bringing some salted beef/rice mix to munch on during the day as well as some rice cakes. Things that are pretty easy on my stomach. I also found some electrolyte replenishing packets at the back of my supplement cupboard that I’ll bring in case I’m feeling a little low on energy nearing the end of the meet.
It looks like I have quite the crew coming to watch my meet and we are all headed to an all-you-can-eat buffet afterwards followed by an all-you-can-drink party at a friend’s place. Should be a good day!
Hell, I’d do the meet just so I could enjoy the food and drinks afterwards! Good luck!
This mental image is disgustingly funny.
Have a blast man. Can’t wait to see how this goes for you!
Haha exactly!
Dear spectators, all zoom cameras have been banned from this meet.
I’ll try to get my wife to take some videos of the lifts to post up afterwards! She wants to take pictures, but I tried to explain picture do nothing for me, I need to be able to watch my lifts!
In powerlifting “Briefs” and “Tighty Whities” are not necessarily the same thing. Maybe ask for clarification.
It would be nice if this was the case, but he was very explicit in what was required. He made the hand gestures and everything. Tighty whities or commando. The Joe Boxer Briefs that I wear are not allowed. Ah well, not a huge deal.
That is some strange shit.
Livin’ Dangerous! Good luck with the 1500 total tomorrow!
TBH I couldn’t wear boxers under a suit if I wanted. Budgie smugglers work way better, because a suit gives you one hell of a wedgie. The last thing you want is boxers adding anything to it.
Good Luck at the comp
Good luck man, now all I can think of is the intro to commando ‘somewhere, somehow, someone’s gonna pay’.
Wishing you luck mate, get after it and have fun!
Today is the hotdog classic for him?
GAME DAY BABY!!! I hope you are having s great time!!!
@FlatsFarmer @alex44938 @simo74 @Irishman92 @losthog @MarkKO @BOTSLAYER - Thanks guys. First meet is in the books!
MEET RECAP:
First I will start off with saying how great the event was run. Spotters, judges, warmup helpers, and lifters were a great bunch of people and made my first competition feel very comfortable.
SQUATS
There were 3 squat racks for warming up on one side of the gym while the other side was for the spectators and lifting flight. I picked the group of shorter dudes so that the rack height would not need to be adjusted at all. Unfortunately one of the guys was quite short which made for quite a low pick. Everyone was very accommodating for what weights each other wanted to use for warming up. With 285lbs on the bar I went for a little paused triple just to get the feel. Then went to rack it and missed one side since it was so damn low. I almost fell backwards but managed to save it at the expense of my back. FUCK. Quite sore, and starting to tighten up before I even worked up to my first real warmup weight…not a good start. Looks like Advil for lunch.
Fortunately, this didn’t seem to affect my squat/deadlift much, as it seemed to only hurt when leaning back, rather than when trying to pull back (as in my squat or deadlift - if that makes sense at all…).
Squat opener at 220.0kg or 485lbs - Liftoff felt off, but I think I rushed it being in front of a crowd for the first time in my lifting career. Buried the depth and came back up pretty quick. 3 Whites
Squat attempt 2 at 237.5kg or 523.6lbs - Liftoff felt clean. Bar was under control. Hit depth and bar came up quickly. 525lbs was my gym PR, so time to smoke it. 3 Whites
Squat attempt 3 at 250.0kg or 551.2lbs - Felt heavy. Hit depth, reached my sticking point…and somehow got through it. There was absolutely doubt in my mind on this one. I wouldn’t have got it with change in my pockets. 25+lb PR 3 Whites
BENCH
Bench warmups were a little odd. Two guys were with their coach on the station that I was sharing. They kept stripping the weight down and took up majority of the time on it. I definitely wasn’t really being assertive enough to get more time, so much of the fault is my own. Bench warmups were:
135x5
185x5
225x1
275x1
And this was over the course of approximately 40minutes… I did a lot of band pullaparts and facepulls since I seemed to just be waiting around.
Bench opener 142.5kg or 314.2lbs - I was surprised with the length of pause required to get the press command but went up no problem. 315lbs is a weight I can roll out of bed and hit. 3 Whites
Bench attempt 2 at 157.5kg or 347.2lbs - Again a seemingly long pause, touched my chest a little high, elbows flared out early, hit sticking point. Failed lift. 3 Reds Yes this was a big jump, but I just hit some easy paused singles at 335lbs earlier in the week that I felt I could just muscle it up. I was surprised that my tweaked back was actually more bothered by trying to get tight on the bench than squatting.
Bench attempt 3 at 157.5kg or 347.2lbs (repeat) - See above. Just didn’t have it today. Hindsight would be to take a smaller jump here after noticing that the pause was longer than I had been training for, but ego and all that. Not happy with a 315lb bench since I’ve had a 315lb bench for over 3 years. This does give me an area to work on though. Glass is half full I suppose. 3 Reds
DEADLIFT
I’m a little bit in my head now with a bad performance on the bench. I gulped down some food since I had time after my bench and before deadlifts. I had some friends and family come to watch so I unwound by sitting with the spectators and shooting the shit with them. My wife was taking videos of each lift and running over to the warmup area and showing me which was very helpful. Deadlift warmups were a bit rushed due to the venue having 1 bathroom stall and 50lifters who just finished lunch and were looking to “make some room”. I pulled some singles up to 545lbs and nothing felt even heavy enough to consider a warmup. I asked the girl to double check the weight on the bar to be sure my kg conversion wasn’t wayyy off.
Deadlift opener at 265.0kg or 585lbs - Excellent opener. Smooth as butter. 3 Whites
Deadlift second attempt 287.5kg or 639.3lbs - I took a bit more of a jump here than I was going to since 585lbs moved so well and I needed to lift over 635lbs to hit a 1500lb total, so I went for it to give me a chance to go for a decent PR on my 3rd attempt. Again, deadlift flew up! Made my goal total and I’m a happy man! Announcer said “If anyone wants to know what a deadlift should look like, that was it”. 3 Whites
Deadlift third attempt at 305kg or 672.4lbs - Gym PR with straps coming into the meet was 655lbs so here goes nothing! Pulled this shit clean! I love deadlift bars. I think one is going in my shopping cart here shortly. Announcer: “I want this guy’s autograph!”. 3 Whites
Ended with a 697.5kg - 1537.7lb total - 432.66 Wilks Score with a poverty bench! Goal has been met, I’m pumped about my squat and deadlift. To be honest, if I’m going to have an off day on one lift, let it be bench.
I appreciate all the support from you guys along the way and thanks to coach @BOTSLAYER for the program and peaking me into the meet. I have videos to upload, but that will be a hungover chore for tomorrow. Time to celebrate!
Damn good work, man!
Awesome report. So glad it went well for you. Sounds like the peak went perfect and You had one of those perfect days!
Quit being so damn nice and don’t hurt yourself trying to be kind…
