Manny Prieto's Lightweight Raw Powerlifting Log

HeatWave 4.4: 6/20/14
Body Weight: 142.0
Stress Check: 22% (Medium)
RHR: 63

I trained at around 3 PM at Morgan Stanley on 8 hours of sleep.

A. Squat: 295x2, 305x2, 275x2x5
B. Squat (3-second Pause): 250x3x2 - First time doing 3-second pauses. The weight felt light but the longer pauses did make these more challenging.
C. Face Pull: 55x4x15

Yes, this was a relatively brief session (even though it didn’t feel brief!). The squats did feel better than Tuesday - I did some foam rolling last night because my groove had been feeling off for the past few days. Maybe not being a complete turd regarding that stuff actually does help!

Anyway, benching and deadlifting tomorrow!

HeatWave 4.5: 6/21/14
Body Weight: 141.8
Stress Check: 26% (Medium)
RHR: 66

I trained at 1 PM at Iron Arena. All benches were done on the Metal Militia bench with 50 lb. Iron Wolfe Super Bench Bar. All deadlifts used the Texas Deadlift Bar.

A. Bench Press: 210x3, 190x2x5
B. Bench Press (3-second pause): 190x3x2
C. Deadlift (sumo): 350x3x3, 340x3, 315x10 - I was supposed to do 350 for 4 sets of 3 but Jason told me to go down 10 lbs. on the last set as these were looking shaky. That 10-rep set was absolutely brutal.
D. Reverse Hyper: 70x4x15
E. Standing Abs on GHR: Green Bandx4x20

Three Weeks Out: 6/23/14
Body Weight: 142.8 (Ah, the good old Sunday evening BBQ!)
Stress Check: 40% (High)
RHR: 65

I trained at around 2 PM at Morgan Stanley on normal rest.

A. Bench Press: 205x2, 215x1, 225x1@8.5, 195x2x3 - I was just instructed to work up to 225 for a single then proceed to the back-off sets. This was the easiest 225 has felt.
B. Bench Press (3-second pause): 185x2x3
C. Incline DB Press: 55x3x10
D. Chinups: BWTx4x12

This is another five-day week, so Squats tomorrow!

Three Weeks Out: 6/24/14
Body Weight: 141.2
Stress Check: 49% (High)
RHR: 74

I trained at around 2 PM at Morgan Stanley on normal rest (note: due to schedule changes I actually get out of work an hour earlier, which actually allows me to get home about an hour and a half earlier - yay, more rest!).

A. Squats: 295x2, 305x2, 320x1@9 - Another submaximal single. I was hoping this would be less than 9, but everything felt heavy today. Oh well.
B. Anderson Squats: 315x3, 325x3, 335x3 - Pins were at the same height as last week, since I wasn’t told to move them back up.
C. Squats: 285x2x3
D. Paused Squats: 265x2x2
E. Conventional Deadlift (controlled eccentric): 260x3x5 - A bit more challenging than last week, but the controlled eccentric part was still much harder than the concentric here. I was running short on time so I had to do my abs during my break at 8 PM.
F. Abs (Technogym Ab Machine): 40x4x20 - I wasn’t happy with my form with 45, so I lightened the weight and focused on getting a good contraction.

Moar benching tomorrow!

Three Weeks Out: 6/25/14
Body Weight: 141.4
Stress Check: 11% (Low)
RHR: 61

The sound of lawn mowers woke me up earlier than I had wanted to, so I checked my numbers and then went back to sleep for another hour or two. I wonder if being “half-asleep” makes my numbers look a little more favorable as I’m obviously in more of a parasympathetic state when I’m not fully awake. Anyway, I trained at Morgan Stanley at around 2 PM; my net total sleep was around 8 hours though the quality may not have been 100% given the aforementioned lawn mowers. Anyway . . .

A. Bench Press: 205x3, 195x2x4, 190x2x4
B. Bench Press (3-second Pause): 185x3x3
C. Seated DB Press: 50x3x10
D. Bent-over BB Row: 155x5x8

Three Weeks Out: 6/27/14
Body Weight:142.2
Stress Check: 28% (Medium)
RHR: 67

I trained at around 1:30 PM at Morgan Stanley (one client wanted to come in earlier so I came in early to make sure I got everything in). Normal rest.

A. Squat: 295x3, 300x2, 285x2x4
B. Squat (3-second Pause): 255x3x2
C. Face Pull: 57.5x4x15

Benching and deadlifts tomorrow!

Three Weeks Out: 6/28/14
Body Weight: 141.2 (fluctuating a little more than I would like - gotta stay hydrated)
Stress Check: 22% (Medium)
RHR: 67

I only got around 6 hours of sleep as I had to work late because one of my coworkers called in sick. I trained at 1 PM at Iron Arena (Metal Militia Bench, 50 lb. Iron Wolfe Super Bench Bar, Texas Deadlift Bar).

A. Bench: 205x2, 220x2, 195x2x5
B. Sling Shot: 215x3, 230x2x3
C. Sumo Deadlift: (Warm-ups 135x8, 225x5) 315x2, 345x2, 365x2, 375x2 - The first three sets were written in the program, and the fourth was to be either heavier or lighter depending on how 365 went. 365 wasn’t super-fast but Jason mentioned doing 375 as an opener so I went ahead with that and it ended up being around a 9 RPE.
D. Reverse Hyper: 70x4x15
E. Standing Abs on GHR: Green Bandx4x20

One more week of training to go!

Two Weeks Out: 6/30/14
Body Weight: 142.4
Stress Check: 23% (Medium)
RHR: 65

I trained at Morgan Stanley at around 2 PM, on normal rest.

A. Bench Press: 205x2, 225x2, 235x1, 200x2x3
B. Bench Press (3-second pause): 195x2x2
C. Incline DB Press: 60x2x8, 65x8
D. Chin-up: BWTx4x12

This may be the last week of training before HeatWave, but Jason Manenkoff sure doesn’t fuck around, lol! I’m only training 4 days this week, but the weights are still pretty heavy!

Squatting tomorrow!

12 Days Out: 7/1/14
Body Weight: 140.8 (Hoping this is just a fluke - this is VERY surprising)
Stress Check: 36% (Medium)
RHR: 67

I trained at Morgan Stanley at around 2 PM, on normal rest.

A. Squat: (Warm-ups: 45x8, 95x5, 135x5, 185x3, 225x3, 255x1, 285x1) 300x3@8, 310x3@8.5 (rep PR) - 300 was the only required set but I was told to take 305-310 if I was feeling good, which I was. I did a better job of keeping my eyes on one spot on the ground so my hip drive and my overall concentration were better.
B. Anderson Squat (pins at 11 on Hammer Strength rack with platform): 335x3, 340x3, 350x3
C. Paused Squat: 275x2x2
D. Abs (Technogym Machine): 40x4x20

Still not my last heavy anything though . . . benching again tomorrow!

11 Days Out: 7/2/14
Body Weight: 140.2 (??? I swear I’m not planning on cutting weight until Sunday!)
Stress Check: 39% (Medium)
RHR: 67

I trained at Morgan Stanley at around 2 PM on normal rest.

A. Bench Press: 205x3, 215x3@9 - 205 flew up pretty easily, so I was hoping 215 would move better but the last rep slowed quite a bit. I had the option of doing another triple at 220+ but given how 215 went I didn’t want to risk missing.
B. Sling Shot: 235x2, 245x2, 250x2x2 - The last three sets were to be done in the 245-255 range, but 250 was a bit of a struggle so I didn’t go any heavier than that. I was somewhat disappointed, but the one time I tested my red Sling Shot 1 RM 250 was my max (I did do 250x2 once but that was with the stiffer Sling Shot that Jason had me test for one workout).
C. Bench Press (3-second pause, no Sling Shot): 200x3x2
D. Seated DB Press: 50x3x10
E. Bent-over BB Row: 155x5x8

I was hoping to go into meet week with more momentum, but I realize I’m at the point where the battle is more psychological than physical - the bulk of the work has already been done, and now it’s just a matter of executing on meet day. I’ve had a lot of great workouts throughout this training cycle, so I shouldn’t get too caught up in one not-so-great workout.

One more lift this week! . . . And since it looks like both my gym and Iron Arena will be closed this weekend, I should really figure out where I’m going to do this. Any New Yorkers lifting this weekend?

Last Heavy Lifts Before RPS HeatWave: 7/5/14
Body Weight: 141.8
Stress Check: 2% (Very Low)
RHR: 63

My sleep quality felt off - I was tossing and turning quite a bit. I trained with a friend at her gym in Astoria around 10:30 AM. The floor by the squat rack was uneven and none of the bars had center knurling, and the racks were both half racks that faced a mirror, but apparently none of that stuff seemed to bother me too much.

A. Squat: 45x8, 95x5, 135x5, 185x3, 225x3, 255x1, 285x1, 300x1, 320x2 - I had the option of going 315 or 320 for a double, and 300 flew up so I went with 320.
B. Bench: 200x2, 215x1, 230x2x1 - First single was 8.5, second felt like a 9.5 though upon reviewing my video again it did go up faster than it felt.
C. Deadlift: 135x5, 225x5, 275x3, 315x3, 365x1, 380x2x1 - Second was better than the first. I guess I just needed to get more “in the zone.”
D. Standing Abs on GHR: Green Bandx4x20

Vids from today: Manny Prieto Training (132 lb. Wt. Class) 7/5/14: Squat/Bench/Deadlift One Week Out - YouTube

One last day to enjoy the holiday before I start the cut down to 132!

4 Days Out: 7/8/14
Body Weight: 140.2 (was 143 on Sunday morning - already cutting down carbs and drinking 2 gallons of water per day in preparation for the weight cut)
Stress Check: 27% (Medium)
RHR: 64

I trained at around 1 PM at Morgan Stanley (I had an early client on my schedule - but of course she didn’t show up! GRRR). Just some light weights to keep my groove (even lighter than my meet day last warm-up) - this will be the last time I squat and bench before the meet on Saturday.

A. Squat: 175x3, 210x2x3, 245x2x3
B. Bench: 145x3, 165x2x3, 185x3x1
C. Sling Shot: 210x2, 230x2, 240x2
D. Landmine Row (neutral grip): 55 lbs. of platesx3x10 - T-bar row 100 lbs. was listed, but we don’t have a T-bar machine so I used a Landmine with a 45 lb. bar. With a landmine you’re not lifting the entire bar so I’m sure this isn’t exactly 100 lbs. but it felt close enough.
E. Band Pull-apart: Monster Minix3x15

One more day of assistance work tomorrow, and then that’s it until the meet!

Looking really strong Manny I can’t wait to hear how your meet goes…good luck

Been following for a while and have yet to comment. Really good stuff in here, man. I’ll also be at Heatwave on Saturday. Best of luck, though I’m sure you won’t need it.

3 Days Out - Final Workout Before RPS HeatWave: 7/9/14
Body Weight: 138.6
Stress Check: 47% (High)
RHR: 75

The Heart Rate numbers look unusual, though my sleep patterns have been thrown off lately - I’ve had to get up early in the AM to pee then gone back to sleep.

Anyway, I trained at Morgan Stanley at around 1:45 PM - just some light assistance work.

A. Landmine Row (neutral grip): 55 lbs. of platesx4x10
B. DB Lateral Raise: 15x3x12
C. Back Extension: monster minix3x12
D. Technogym Ab Machine: 40x4x20

Time to rest up, make weight, and get ready for a big meet on Saturday.

Meet Write-up: RPS HeatWave (Merrick, NY) - 7/12/14 2:30 PM
For those of you who hate long-ass write-ups, I’ll put the “short version” on top and the details at the bottom.

Official Weight: 132.0 lbs.
Division: Amateur Raw Classic (No Knee Wraps)
Squat: 340 lbs. (15 lb. meet PR from February)
Bench: 240 lbs. (35 lb. meet PR from February)
Deadlift: 400 lbs. (35 lb. meet PR from February)
Total: 980 lbs. (85 lb. PR from February)

Video: Manny Prieto (132 lb. Wt. Class): 980 Total at RPS HeatWave (Merrick, NY) - YouTube

Now for the “long” version . . .

This was my third powerlifting meet, but my first under the coaching of Jason Manenkoff. When I first met Jason, my goal was to qualify for Raw Unity Meet, and I wasn’t sure whether I was going to do this July meet (at the time, the new qualifying standards weren’t released, and I didn’t want to cut weight for another meet unless I felt like I had a realistic shot at qualifying). When the newer, higher standards were released, I agreed to do the meet regardless of what my numbers were as I felt like I was going to have to train the whole year to qualify. Then, as my training progressed, my numbers got to the point where we figured we might as well take a shot at this meet.

On Sunday of meet week, my weight was 143 after a long holiday weekend of BBQs. If you’ve been following my log closely, you have noticed that I’ve put on some muscle since the last meet, so of course cutting to 132 would be more difficult, but the rate at which I was losing weight in the early part of the week was also slower than my previous two meets, so I suspect the water load may have worked against me a little. I should also note that Jason had asked me to enter the PM session (I would normally lift in the morning), so I had a later weigh-in. My weight on Thursday night was 136, so I was worried I would have to use the sauna for the first time in my powerlifting career. I wore extra clothes to bed to try to sweat off a little more weight. Fortunately, more weight came off in the early part of Friday and I was already at 132.2 by 2:30 PM, so I was able to step on the scale exactly where I needed to be (as opposed to previous cuts where I overshot my weight goal and ended up having more weight to put on). Because of the late weigh-in I took the whole Friday off from work, so it was easier for me to reconstitute (I was already at 142 by 9 PM, and went to bed at around midnight weighing 144).

Squat Warm-ups: 65x8, 115x5, 170x3, 200x3, 230x2, 260x1, 280x1, 310x1
The warm-up area was a complete train wreck. Plates were lying around all over the place, and there were even people warming up in the Rogue squat stands outside of the warm-up area instead of the monolifts (which was what was on the platform). At one point I even dropped a plate on my left foot (which hurt pretty badly), and I had to rush through my last warm-up singles, leaving me feeling completely gassed by the time my name was called.
Opener: 320 - Good! Even with all those things considered, this was still easy enough to feel like an opener.
2nd Attempt: 340 - Good! This was a real grinder, though, so I went with 345 as my 3rd (I was hoping for 350+, but based on how shaky this was, that wasn’t happening.)
3rd Attempt: 345 - Miss - I fell too far forward and ended up losing my balance. I did this in the gym previously, so I was disappointed in how this went. Overall my execution was definitely off.

Bench Warm-ups: 50x8, 100x5, 140x5, Paused 165x2, 185x1, 200x1
Fortunately bench warm-ups seemed less adventurous, though the thicker bench pads took some getting used to.
Opener: 215 - Good!
2nd: 230 - Good! This felt pretty easy, so I knew I had another 10 lbs. in me (possibly even more, but I knew I wouldn’t be happy with anything less than 240).
3rd: 240 - Good! I definitely felt like I left another 5 lbs. on the platform here, but again, I didn’t want to miss and walk away with just 230 - not only does this keep my shot at a RUM-Qualifying total alive, but 240 is good enough to qualify for RUM Bench-Only.

Deadlift Warm-ups: 225x3, 275x1, 315x1, 340x1
Jason, Jon, and Kyle all benched in the 3rd flight while I was deadlifting in the 1st flight, so the only warm-up Jason got to see was my last one. That last warm-up scared him and me as it went up a lot slower than expected, but people were already starting to pull on the platform so it was too late for me to change my opener. When I was in the on-deck area I noticed my belt felt a little loose - I normally wear it with two holes showing, so I cranked my belt against the Rogue rack and got it to just one hole showing.
Opener: 370 - Good! And it felt like an opener, too. Crisis averted.
2nd: 400 - Good! With that, I was just 20 pounds away from qualifying for RUM and I didn’t have anything else to worry about, so it was time to go for broke.
3rd: 420 - Miss - I got the bar up to my knees but I felt it drift too far away from me and I lost my balance.

Overall, I was disappointed to fall short of qualifying for RUM, and my squats especially didn’t feel great (the belt thing I noticed during deadlifts probably affected my squat as well, so I was pissed that I didn’t notice that earlier), but I don’t know if anyone could have expected me to add 85 lbs. to my total in less than 5 months, especially considering it wasn’t like I was a complete beginner at that time. In the meantime, I’ll be looking to take another shot in the early fall.

Onward and upward!

You have a lot to be proud of. You did great Manny and this is just the beginning. Remember what you wrote in the questionnaire I sent you in response to the question regarding your goals…

  1. What are your current, specific goals? Please list the numbers youâ??re hoping for and the dates in which youâ??d like to achieve them. Looking for a 925 total at my next meet in September to qualify for RUM (assuming they donâ??t raise the qualifying totals again).

“330-220-375 would be great but Iâ??d be happy with adjusting those numbers up or down as my main focus is the total.”

I’d say 340,240,400 (980) pretty much blew your original goals out of the water! =) 85 lbs. added to your total and 30 lbs. more than you hoped for. Also for those interested one piece of info Manny forgot to share… His lifts ALL moved up in the national rankings… Squat#8 Bench#14 Deadlift#26 Total#7!!!

Nicely done at the meet. Impressive numbers indeed.
Continuing to follow from afar.

Great write up manny your log is very inspirational not only did you manage to set meet PR’s on all lifts but to add 35lbs to your bench in such a short time is amazing stuff both your team and yourself should be very proud
Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

@Jason - I was holding off on the rankings until they became “official” . . . and thanks for leaving the number in your quote so everyone knows that your questionnaire is long as hell, lol!

Post-Meet 1.1: 7/14/14
Body Weight: 139.6 - My weight typically does go down a bit after cutting weight. Also, I haven’t been taking my normal training supplements (creatine, Plazma, etc.) when I’m not training.
Stress Check: 21% (Medium)
RHR: 59 - Lowest in a while. Looks like the fatigue from training has dissipated.

I’m calling this period “Post-Meet” as we are easing back into things a little, but with my next meet most likely in October this isn’t the time to be slacking off. I trained at around 2 PM at Morgan Stanley on normal rest.

A. Squat: 225x4x6 - Working on moving my stance in. This didn’t feel completely comfortable (I might have moved in a little too close) but the weight was easy enough that every rep moved well.
B. Walking Lunge: 16 kg KBs in each handx3x8 per leg
C. RDL: 135x10, 145x10, 155x10, 165x10
D. Leg Curl (Morgan Stanley doesn’t have a GHR): 70x3x12
E. Technogym Ab Machine 40x4x20

One more day of training this week, then 4 days next week.
