After having to cut as much weight as I did for Raw Unity, I was at a crossroads. My last meet at 132 gave me a total that is Top 11 in the Current rankings, but still far away from the All-Time list, so I was reaching the point where the risk of continuing to cut to 132 outweighed the potential rewards. On the other hand, I was still too small to be competitive at 148, so we spent the first several weeks after RUM focusing on gaining mass.
I’m still far from ready to compete against guys who actually have to cut weight for 148, but the USAPL (which has two-hour weigh-ins) has the 66 kg (145.5 lb.) weight class, so I figured a good intermediate step would be to do a meet in that federation to qualify for Raw Nationals in October.
I had considered doing the USAPL meet at South Brooklyn Weightlifting Club after RUM, but it had sold out before I even finished training for RUM. I had then thought about doing the Orange County meet the following weekend, but then I heard about the CT Spring Classic, which not only was actually closer to home than Orange County, but was going to have several notable lifters - Kimberly Walford was going to be judging, while Ewa Januszkiewicz and Krissy Mae Cagney were on the roster (Krissy would eventually withdraw due to injury, but Ewa did not disappoint, as you can see here: https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/hphotos-xaf1/t50.2886-16/11213118_390468777807171_125875049_n.mp4). So I signed up for that meet.
My own expectations for the meet were low - with the main focus of the past few weeks being hypertrophy, not only did we not have much of a peak for this meet, but much of what I did was a departure from my usual powerlifting training - I didn’t even pull in my competition stance until two weeks out. Plus, with my first meet in a new weight class, and my first USAPL meet, I knew I would be starting from the bottom.
I started meet week at 149, so I did have to cut weight. Unfortunately my weight ended up getting way too low, even though I was eating plenty of food Friday night and even Saturday morning (they ended up splitting the meet into sessions, with men lifting in the afternoon). I did manage to get back up to 146 before stepping on the platform, but I definitely can’t let myself get too light like this again.
The warm-up area used Texas Power Bars and EliteFTS racks and benches, so it definitely felt different from what was on the platform but not a huge difference.
Squat
Warm-ups: 45x8, 95x5, 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 255x1, 275x1, 300x1, 320x1
Opener: 155 kg (341.7 lbs.) - Good!
2nd: 162.5 kg (358.2 lbs.) - Red-lighted for depth. I stumbled out of the rack which made the lift much more difficult than it should have been. Looked like a close call, but the USAPL is known for not giving those calls. I would have liked more, but knowing how this went I ended up taking it again. I lowered the rack height to see if that would help.
3rd: 162.5 kg (358.2 lbs.) - Red-lighted again. The walkout was a little better, but I still had trouble keeping the bar secured on my back and ended up losing my balance on the way down, so this ended up being another close call.
Bench
Warm-ups: 45x8, 95x8, 135x5, 165x3, 185x2, 205x1, 220x1
Opener: 105 kg (231.4 lbs.) - Good!
2nd: 112.5 kg (248 lbs.) - Good, though it felt much heavier than I had hoped. Even though I had just hit 260 in the gym, I played it safe and went for a small PR.
3rd: 115 kg (253.5 lbs.) - Missed halfway up.
Deadlift
Warm-ups: 135x5, 225x3, 275x1, 315x1, 365x1
Opener: 185 kg (407.8 lbs.) - Good! At this point, needing 451 to reach a PR total, we went right up to 435 for a PR attempt.
2nd: 197.5 kg (435.4 lbs.) - Missed just below the knee, didn’t do a good enough job keeping my knees out.
3rd: 197.5 kg (435.4 lbs.) - Missed again - was keeping knees out more but the bar got away from me.
In terms of my performance, this was a disappointing day, but if I was going to have issues like the ones I had, it was better to have them at a meet with little on the line (I still managed to qualify for Raw Nationals even with the numbers I did have). And despite a poor performance on my part, this was one of the more enjoyable meets I’ve been to (probably 2nd to Raw Unity). Looking forward to ironing out those issues so I can perform better at my next meet.
