Makes Me Laugh in the Gym

The second strange thing was when he loaded plates on any move. These were old-school metal plates that had the lip on them to you could pick them up. He had to have ALL the lips of each plate either all facing into the bar or away from the bar. It didn’t matter which as long as they were all similar.

I do this. We have old school iron plates with a lip. Every lip on every plate had to be facing the same direction. Either in or out, but must be the same. Pins must be in an up position. You will find a lot of OCD lifters in this world. But I don’t flex non-existant muscles. I do love looking at my pumped up traps however. None of the other muscles, just traps.

Every plate is supposed to face the same way. That’s a rule. You don’t break it. Bad stuff happens if you break it.
Ah now I’m beginning to see why I am small or weak. I tempted the Plate-Lip God.

On an off-note, we weighed some of the metal plates in the gym where I worked when we upgraded to rubber ones. After 10 or so years of being used, you’d be surprised how off the metal plates would be. I don’t know if it’s from use or poor quality control, but every one was shy by anywhere from 2-.5 lbs on our digital scale.

I was setting up to squat the other day, ammonia cap in hand, when some skinny asian in a wife beater walks up to the rack, put’s his hand on one side of the bar, and looks himself up and down in the mirror next to the rack…

I’m usually fairly laid back when lifting, but this had me pissed.

I think I have it worse than most though because I lift in a collegiate recreation gym.

Correct. This isn’t wierd, or funny. Its old school. You won’t find too many long time lifters that don’t do this.
Every powerlifter I know breaks that rule.

The first plate on the bar ALWAYS faces inwards. Even if it’s only a 5kg plate for curls or somethng. And the rest face outwards.

Weird as it seems, this is how it happens in competition and I can’t lift with them any other way!

<<< Thats me! Or it used to be when I used metal plates. Now we have rubber ones, and there are 2 different brands, but I must use the same brand at opposing ends of the bar, though different brands are permitted to sit next to each other on one end of the bar.
I have 3 300 pound sets of olympic plates and some odd ones I got used. I have to have “brand symmetry” on my bars.

Both ends have to be the same combination of plates. While I’ve never weighed them the thought that there may be a slight variation between plates of the same size would haunt me otherwise.

the mirrors are there for a reason. you should be looking in the mirror so you keep your form correct. however if you’re going out of your way to flex in a mirror you should really have one at home to do it in.

What makes me laugh are the skinny college boys not grunting, but SCREAMING while benching one plate per side.

“LIGHT WEIGHT! LIGHT WEIGHT!”

First off, let me say that i lift at a gym at ohio state univ. I have 2 choices, i can go to the gym where it’s super nice, brand new, clean, state of the art, or i can go to the one where it’s dirty and i see the same guys. obviously i choose the 2nd.

anyways, it’s almost sad how bad everyone works out there, although about 5-10% of people do pretty solid workouts, and i always enjoy seeing the same guys(and a couple girls) lifting correctly, and with effort written all over their faces. I think I have seen maybeeeee 3 other people do a squat parallel or slightly below, and that includes my brother.

I just go and focus on my routine, i get too annoyed looking around seeing all the guys who will forever be toothpicks.

I like checking out my calves and rear delts. They need work so I blatently flex and look at them to check if they’re improving.

I don’t care who sees.

Why is that?

Sounds like some of you need to concentrate on LIFTING and not so much other people’s behavior.

Now thats what I was trying to say. “Brand symmetry”… Nice :)
Yep, three different ones, but both ends have to be the same and in the same order from the inside. All three sets have the built in handles and are the same on both sides thank God or I’d probably fret over that too.

It’s called gymmetry, and it keeps your lifts from being lop-sided.

Truth.

But do you line the handles up … on both sides of the bar ?

My Brother.

What makes me laugh in the gym?

I saw a guy bring his mp3 player in to the gym so he could listen to tunes while on the elliptical.

Not so funny?

His “portable” mp3 player was a laptop!
