MacGyver Moments

I was doing a dinner party last night and they also hired a bartender. Cool. I needed a couple wines for some dishes and asked him to pick them for me, since he was buying the booze. He agreed.

Well, he turned out to be a no-show. The guests are kinda pissed, which isn’t a good starting point for me, and I needed that wine an hour ago to serve on time. I go out to my car to check if I magically happen to have a bottle or 2 in my portable kit. No dice. But I have some collagen in my gym bag. And I saw a megapack of those squeeze popsicles that cut your mouth in the freezer.

I got compliments on the sauce all night long.

What are some of those MacGuyver moments you have had at work, in the gym, or wherever?

I’ve had to get good at doing this in the kitchen. It’s probably helped me develop thinking skills overall.

Some highlights:

1. cold smoking setup: put pot on stove, soaked wood chips in pot. Covered pot with foil, connected pot to a covered bowl with the fish using a silicone tube
2. Angled heat source for omlette: heated a flat griddle pan, flipped and tilted to use as a heat source that mimics tilting pan into the flame of a gas stove to cook the far lip
3. Blow drier is used more for drying the skin of various meats than for my hair
4. Water bath/sous vide alternative: fillled rice cooker with water and kept on the “warm” setting. Made perfectly tender liver
5. 
   I ordered eel thinking it was filleted and segmented. It was not.
6. i needed a mould for liver truffles. Grocery store had tiny sample cups for yoghurt which happened to be the perfect shape
7. Made my own baking powder from citric acid and baking soda leftover from chemistry class in high school
8. I wanted to make merengue nests for a dessert. They turned out ugly and cracked I turned the remaining merengue into “spoons”
