Low Carb Diet

Has anyone experienced on a low-carb diet (<50 g of carbs), your head hurting and your abdomen kinda pulsing/mildy hurting (I mean you can feel the pulse/something different)?

I’ve just been on a low carb diet for 1 week now, my head still hurts… I’m eating 200 g of protein, 250 g of fat, and <50 g of carbs and following Thibs war room for strategies for my fat loss in going from 195 lbs @ 12 % to 185 lbs @ 7 %?

Anyone else feel any weird physiological side effects when dieting, especially lowering your carbs?

Also I’ve been on a ketogenic diet for 5 months, going from 225 lbs to 195 lbs @ 12 % bf (long time to diet, but got rid of a ton of fat), I took a 7 month break (eating at maintenance with good carbs e.g. veggies, brown rice, oats and improving my strength levels)… I now want to get rid of the last 10 lbs of fat to get down to 185 lbs @ 7 %… do you suggest to do a full ketogenic diet (<50 g)? Or should I try carb cycling? I don’t know this abdominal pain/pulsing is freakin’ me out… I have never had it… could it be from the ketogenic diet?

Any other tips you guys have for nutrition and training going from 12 % to 7-8 % (I know it is very hard and takes time)?

Thanks,

Yes…headaches, dizziness, general fatigue. Carbs are used primarily for fuel (basically).

1st week was a little rough, but I’m used to it nwo. 45g/day for the past 5.5 weeks.

refeed every 2 weeks and I slip into a temporary diabetic coma for an hour or two

The headaches usually occur when your body is shifting into ketosis, which should have happened already for you. I’m not sure why this is happening, because you’ve mentioned that you’ve done a keto diet before (you ARE on a keto diet currently). I would suggest carb cycling diet or maybe a CKD. Search for the “Carb Cycling Experience” thread or “T-Nation Diet Links” thread if you’re interested in another approach and would like to get some ideas.

Again, I’m not sure why you were fine with a keto diet in the past but now you’re having trouble. Also, your calories were at 3000+kcals daily which might be alittle too high if you’re looking to slice down to 7%.

I run pretty low on carbs, below 50 on my light training days and below 125 on my heavy days (I do utilize a cheat day on the weekends, around 150-200). When your first getting into it, your body will give you flak (headaches, dizziness, etc,) but sooner or later you will adapt. The traditional American diet is so carb heavy that our bodies have become very accustomed to using them as energy. I don’t really experience any side effects anymore, except maybe on off days where I keep carbs to an absolute minimum.

Your body can adapt to pretty much anything, it just takes time.

Well I’m a noob when it comes to dieting properly. I’ve wrestled for 3 years, and have dieted down severely, losing a crap load of muscle. In the past because of proper diet (lots of proteins and fats during ketosis) I was able to lose of fat, without any muscle sacrifice. Of course, I took time off to eat more (nutritious of course) and re-set my metabolism. Now the last 8-10 lbs is what is left to get to a sub 10 % bf, I don’t want to do any drastic like the protein/fat approach with creams/bacon/eggs as my main sources, rather I hope to eat more veggies, leaner protein sources, and good fats like olive oil/cheeses/nuts (I just wanna to eat alot more healthier for myself).

But even in low carb, I experience alot of gas and some headaches.

I don’t want to go overboard like last time… I have a habit, from being a wrestler, of overtraining, and I know now this totally destroyed my metabolism (eating way less, and working out 2X a day)… I understand fat loss is now all about intensity and not so much frequency, so what do you guys suggest in respect to a training and nutrition protocol to drop these last 8-10 lbs… and what are your experiences going to the sub 10 % bf?

I would do what you’re doing now, but cut some fats out to drop your calories. You’re currently over 3,000kcals. If you’re not doing some cardio start adding it in. Just a matter of time.

What are good low carb sources for veggies, fruits? What types of spices, flavorings do you guys using during cutting phases?

I pretty much eat veggies (any) 24/7 dieting and not dieting. I eat beans/legumes as well and sometimes potatoes/corn.
I’m not a bber, I’m merely an athlete has bulked from 180 lbs to 225 lbs, gained muscle for performance, and cut down to 195 lbs now. When I bulked I just ate alot of veggies, beans, potatoes, and corn with alot of protein (I’m a wrestler, so I stopped doing any cardiovascular work during this and the gains were easy).

Also is there suggested # of days lifting/cardio should be allotted to, for general fat loss? (I’m also participate in the swimming club now… so we have technical practices)
I tend to go overboard in respect to training/nutrition (because of wrestling… my mentality is really rigid/strict from the intense training), I have a high level of anaerobic endurance/conditioning so metabolic conditioning comes easy to me.

I recommend you look into “The Anabolic Diet” by Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale. Its essentially a high protein, low carb, high fat diet, with carb cycling. You should be able to download it online or buy it of course.

low carb takes some getting used to, once you used to it though its actually not a big deal. just stick it out

Google “carb counter” or that type of thing, there are a bunch of free carb indexes online. I also like a website called low carb diets @ About.com for basic low carb info, recipes etc. It’s not a bodybuilding website so don’t expect that.

Starchy vegetable to avoid are potatoes (all kinds), most squash, peas and corn, lima beans etc. Some vegetables are high in sugar (beets etc). You want fibrous vegetables like green beans, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, brussel sprouts etc.

Most fruits are not low carb. Blackberries, cranberries are two exceptions. Other fruits (strawberries) have a few carbs, but you can possibly eat them in small amounts, if you are not trying to eliminate carbs altogether.

imo lcd is the shittiest kind of diets, they make u feel bad, depressed and PANIC ATTACKS,every single time i go on a lcd this shit aka “panic attack” starts to hit me on the half of the 3rd week .

and it goes on an exponential increase 1 a day then 2 times and so,and after researching and reading ,it shoed that low carb diets effect the seratonin lvls which in turn r in direct cause of cuasing freak outs,or panic attacks.

anyways if u wana go on lcd i would recommend u zig zag 3 days lcd 1 day high and so on .

You owe it to yourself to try the diet and give it a chance. Everyone responds differently to carbs; some people don’t adapt easily to a low carb diet, while some people feel better without carbs. Myself for example, I feel better with low carbs and when I carb up on the weekend its like a diabetic coma with a horrible gas problem. I never expercienced the side effects of transitioning from carbs to fat as an energy source like many people do.

When my wife was diagnosed with Type two Diabetes two years ago we tried low carb. If I remember right I started getting a headache a few day in and kept it for around two weeks. After that the headache went away and I felt like I had tons more energy. I quit feeling the ups and downs I usually felt during the day. I even quit craving sugar… Shocker for ME! I ate this way to support my wife in controlling her Blood sugar. I actually lost 20 pounds that I had put on the year before working at a desk job. I was eating tons of fat and protein way beyond the calories I was eating before. Once I lost back to around 190 I quit losing.

All it took to end it was putting one piece of cake in my mouth for a birthday. I was instantly addicted and when I tried to eat low carb the next week… It was a constant headache all over again. We were consistant for around 9 months our first try.

I plan on doing it again… (after the holidays!) with a little higher carb count. I think I ate below 50 before. I might eat 50-75 next time. I just need to research it a bit more.

Ohhh…This website seem to have pretty good recipes.
