Effect of caloric restriction and dietary composition of serum T3 and reverse T3 in man.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of caloric restriction and dietary composition on circulating T3 and rT3 obese subjects were studied after 7-18 days of total fasting and while on randomized hypocaloric diets (800 kcal) in which carbohydrate content was varied to provide from 0 to 100% calories. As anticipated, total fasting resulted in a 53% reduction in serum T3 in association with reciprocal 58% increase in rT3. Subjects receiving the no-carbohydrate hypocaloric diets for two weeks demonstrated a similar 47% decline in serum T3 but there was no significant change in rT3 with time.

In contrast, the same subjects receiving isocaloric diets containing at least 50 g of carbohydrate showed no significant changes in either T3 or rT3 concentration. The decline in serum T3 during the no-carbohydrate diet correlated significantly with blood glucose and ketones but there was no correlation with insulin or glucagon. We conclude that dietary carbohydrate is an important regulatory factor in T3 production in man. In contrast, rT3 concentration is not significantly affected by changes in dietary carbohydrate.

Our data suggest that the rise in serum rT3 during starvation may be related to more severe caloric restriction than that caused by the 800 kcal diet.[/quote]

interesting stuff wannabebig250. nice work

thanks. just trying to get to the bottom of why low carb paleo diets from the “gurus” contributed to my hypothyroidism.

Thanks for the info… Interesting, now considering CBL.

pop into the CBL thread to see the several hundred grams of carbs we can eat and lose weight lol.

in case anybody is wondering about personal experiences with carbs and thyroid. my daily temps came up from 96.0-97.5 to about 97.5-98.1 in only 2 weeks.

Good to know. Have you had any other symptoms of hypothyroidism which have improved?

umm… the ridges on my fingernails are almost gone. i had a thinning patch on one side of my hair (wasnt noticeable, only to me) that is filling back in. have energy all day long without crashing around 3-4pm. i feel “awake” when i wakeup and not groggy for hours. no more brain fog. less dry skin. not as moody. losing weight and gaining muscle and strength even though im eating 10x the amount of carbs than before. the list goes on and on.

^That’s awesome. Glad you figured yourself out!

I was born with hypothyroidism. Started with synthroid and now take another form of it called Levoxyl. I struggled badly during my first prep last year. Weight moved very slowly. Started with carbs, then carb cycled, then took them out. This year I started 16wks out, ran into problem again of no real weight change, decided to run low carb.

Worked great except now Im stuck at the same weight. Hasnt really moved in almost 2 weeks. Im doing 2 hrs low intensity cario per day. I dont know what to do. I tried have 1/2 cup of oats one morning pre workout. Felt great but weight didnt budge the next day. Then a week or so later i had a high carb day of 1 cup brown rice for meals 2-5. Nothing happened except i felt like shit the next day.

2 weeks later, i decided to refeed with a cheat meal for meal 2 which is alost no more than an hr after training. I did a lot less cardio that day and STILL lost almost a lb. 7 days later i did the exact same meal, same time of day, and i gained weight! Im 6.5wks out, 194lbs, trying to make it to 177lbs. any advice?? Oh and Im not regular. I cant go to the bathroom normally. taking probiotics, fibef, all sorts of those basics, etc.

I think you would get a better response starting your own thread, at least from me lol. Contest prepping goes way over my head.
