And don’t lecture me on free speech in the U.S. I remember when a couple of black sportsmen were punished over raising a gloved fist. There was no violence in their action, but they were punished for it.
…[/quote]
This is a silly example. They were punished by the USOC, not by the government.
Jim McMahon was punished and fined by the NFL for wearing and Adidas headband.

100%. All they have to do is apply. If they don’t get the permits file a lawsuit. It is the same thing the neonazis do.
This thread reminds me of the quote “he who angers you also controls you”.
I agree with Rainjack that the hate groups have a right to assemble in a peaceful manner (even as much as I disagree with the group). What SHOULD have happened was that the town turn a blind eye to the group, while the cops WATCH THEM LIKE A HAWK. Surely, at some point, every one of them would have at least gotten a public profanity citation.
Unfortunately, the looters just lent creedance to everything the Nazis were trying to state. It really pisses me off when someone makes neo-nazis look right.
Don’t give groups like that free rent in your head.
I guarantee that none of the white supremacists are losing any sleep over what happened. They are laughing all the way back to West Virginia, because they got just what they wanted.
Does this imply that every time ANSWR or that “By any means necessary” group, both of which are neo-communist organizations, starts a rally, we should riot, burn and pillage?
From the accounts that I read about this incident, the Neo-Nazis had legal permits to march, but they decided to take their march though a predominately african-american neighborhood, possibly looking for a confrontation.
In addition, while they marched, they shouted obscenities at the gathering crowds of people. Again not a bright move. This group was clearly out to start trouble and they got it. In many people’s minds ANY press is better than no press at all (e.g. Hollywood “bad” boys and girls).
I’m not saying the response was right, but I feel that the Neo-Nazi group should have charges leveled against them for inciting a riot as well as those who were involved in the riot.

For the record, before anyone else says anything, I am TOTALLY against the willful destruction of someone’s property just because you are frustrated or are trying to make a point. It is counterproductive to destroy the very area that you live in because you are not hurting the “man”, like some of the more ignorant of people think, you are hurting the very people that you call your brothers and sisters and the “man” uses these actions to justify “his” own beliefs about you.

I was under the impression that the thugs started tearing stuff up before the march even began. How can the neo-nazis be guilty of inciting a riot when thugs started their rampage no where near the starting point of the march, and before the march even began?
If they did something illegal, then they should pay the price. But trumping up charges against them because you don’t like them is wrong.
The thugs broke the law. They should pay. It was there fault for acting the way they did. Period.

(Shaking head) you are missing the entire point my friend!
It’s not politically correct to hold certain groups responsible for their actions. However, it is always politically correct to attack a bunch of Nazis.
Slight shift of subject… To all those who feel these nazi’s shouldn’t have the right to march, what is your take on the white and jew hating nation of islam and black panthers having the “right” to march. Farakhann(sp?) has openly stated his hate for jews and whites. Because they are black does it give them the right to harbor this opinion and still in your eyes have the right to march as opposed to the nazi’s?
Let me clear things up on the happenings in Toledo on Saturday. This happened in the neighborhood I grew up in. In fact, we lived there 20 years. I watched the neighborhood deteriorate into what it is now, and have often wondered why this hasn’t happened before.
Now onto what happened. One thing that didn’t happen was the actual march. They showed up at a local park and did a few chants. The police realized that there were alot more anti-protesters in the area than they thought and canceled the march immediately. They got into their cars and went to another part of Toledo and watched the events that followed on TV like everyone else. Once the rioters learned that they were gone is when all hell broke loose.
People took out all there anger on the Police, firemen, and rescue workers. They threw bricks at cop cars and even worse, I saw footage where they were throwing bricks at the Rescue Squads. They also burned down a bar of a 87 year-old man that has been there since the beginning of time. They also looted some stores and gas stations. In all there were 114 arrest.
There were a couple of Homecoming dances canceled and an 8:00 curfew in effect on Saturday and Sunday.
There was a report of someone calling down to the Nazi group about the problems they have been having with the gangs in the area. The person denies it and it is still unclear of who contacted who. The group had announced the march a week and a half ago. People all over the media, including the mayor and police chief, were telling people to stay indoors and ignore the idiots. Well, you see how that went over.
Its always funny to watch others criticize people for their actions. its even funnier to listen to people become experts on a subject they know nothing about. The problem doesnt lie with in this one incident, it stems from the treatment of african americans over the course of our history. In know way am i agreeing with any type of violence, but i dont think you have the right to provoke any group of people.

It’s always funny to watch moral relativists refuse to say rioting, throwing rocks at ambulances, and burning buildings is wrong.

Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit.
The thugs were not provoked. They acted on their own.
When will the “they are poor black people” excuse finally play out? They are fully responsible for their own actions. There was no white threat to their well-being. I’m sick of the excuses.
I think their very presence should make them legally responsible for insighting a riot. Rainjack ur not a spineless pussy. But I still don’t blame those people for responding the way they did. If a nazi group goes to a black neighbourhood they should be charged even if they didn’t provoke anyone. you guys are right though, if everyone completly ignored these mutts they would be without a means to spread their hate filled ignorance.

Violence is violence. You can justify any action with the type of logic you propose. Do you really want people dealing with issues that way?
No group gets a free pass to commit a crime.
If violence is going to be used to redress social issues and make a point what’s to stop the police from stopping a riot with a machine gun?

It’s called self-control. Something that the thugs did not have.
No one is defending what the neo-nazis stand for - at least I haven’t seen anyone taking up their cause on here.
The only ones that got hurt from the rioting was the property owners that had their stuff torn up, and the 114 thugs that were arrested. How does that do anything to combat what the neos stand for? I say it does nothing but perpetuate the nazi’s bigotry. The nanzis think that blacks are like animals, and that is eactly how a bunch of them acted.

They never marched!!! The police canceled it before it took place. How you can defend these people I have no idea. You were not there. You did not grow-up there. You do not know the history of the area. You know nothing about what happened. They are complete idiots. They tore up their own streets. They threw rocks at the same people that they will call to come and save them after they get shot at by some other idiot.

Exactly! It’s already been reported that they are bragging on their website and to the media about how the “savages” acted. In short - they won.
I heard that a member of the Black Panthers was going to drive down the road in front of my house today, so I just set fire to my barn. I think the Black Panthers should be held liable for my actions.
Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as the Ohio story, now, does it?
