Looking for Something to Read

Any recommendations? I am retired now and I have plenty of time to read, but I am having trouble finding good books.

What kind of books do you like or are you looking for anything?

I like Dan Brown and Lee Child for leisure reading. If the Middle East interests you Black Flags by Joby Warrwick is one of the best books I’ve read in the last few years. If you like early American history Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger and Revolutionary Summer by Joseph Ellis were both really good.

Tons of books in here:

Doestoyevsky, The Brother’s Karamazov, The Idiot, Crime and Punishment, The Double

Biographies - Washington, Franklin, Napoleon, Teddy Roosevelt (3 part series by Edmund Morris is phenomenal), Patton

The Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire by Gibbons should keep you busy. Or get out of the fuckin’ house you bastard. It’s a big beautiful world - be a shame not to see it…

Thanks for the quick response. I like almost any type of book, but I’m really looking for fiction right now. I’ve read Brown and Child and enjoyed both. I noticed the Reacher books have really taken off, have you read the later ones?

I’ve read probably 6 or so of the series, but haven’t really kept up with it. They’re good vacation books so to speak.

I don’t know why but No Shortcuts To The Top by Ed Viesturs was the first book that popped in my head. I read it 10 years ago. Great adventure nonfiction by the first American to summit all of the worlds 8000+ meter mountains without using any supplemental oxygen

You could always hit up LOTR or A Song of Ice and Fire. (Martin is releasing another book - a prequel about the rise of the Targaryen’s in November)

If you liked the movie “Arrival” then I’d suggest “Stories of your Life and others” by Ted Chiang, which includes the short story that movie is based upon and only the second best story in the collection.

Anything written by Clive Cussler ( yes I have read them all)
David Balducci… Absolute Power and The Escape
The Breakthrough series by Micheal C Grumley ( if you have amazon. He is self published)
And if you want your brain to melt… The Atlantis Gene series by AG Riddle

Dick Couch’s series on the Navy SEALs is great nonfiction that reads like fiction if you’re interested in that sort of thing. The Warrior Elite is about BUD/S, and The Finishing School is about SQT, which is immediately after BUD/S.

Dick Marcinko’s Rogue Warrior is another good nonfiction book about the guy that started SEAL Team Six.

Also, if you haven’t read A Song of Ice and Fire (the series Game of Thrones is based on), I don’t recommend it unless (or until) the author finally finishes the series. You’ll blow through all 5 books in a month or two and then be left waiting for the last two, which will probably never be published until GRRM dies and someone else takes over.
