Looking for a New Watch

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

I can appreciate the appreciation of the craftsmanship. That being said, performance wise, any difference?

Also, is there a reason why companies like Hamilton or Tissot get more respect from watch guys even though I’m assuming they use a battery operated quartz movement? I’m finding this watch scene pretty fascinating.

As an aside, you seem to know a lot about a lot.
Hamilton and Tissot get more respect because they are entry level swiss watches with a lot of history and have generally been top quality amongst their competitors.

If you swim have you thought about the seiko dive watch? Classic design, automatic and durable. Mine was about $300.00. It is 15 years old and works fine. Probably have to replace the synthetic band every couple years.

Go on ebay and find an older, beat up, Rolex, preferably a Daytona or a old military Rolex, that has been recently serviced. You can find one for under $500. I found an old black case one from the 1960s that was perfect.

Put a NATO strap band on it (about $20): BINGO, looks like a $25,000 Pro-Hunter Rolex.

People have stopped meetings and asked about the watch, several times.

Total investment: $450.
You can’t find a dial for a Daytona for $500. Hell, the box alone from the 60s or 70s would be worth more than $500. I paid over $1,000 for my Daytona’s 5 year service, you’re not going to find a recently serviced vintage watch for less than half the price of a service.

Ah, a retail payer. I have a cousin, you see. But yes, a Daytona was a poor example. I’d look for an old military watch, which did have black cases.

Here are my 3 favs: UN Blue Max (replaced the blue band b/c rubber bothered my arm), a 2014 Daytona (my go-to work watch), and modern ProHunter (black cased Rolex).

I actually like my improvised ProHunter better because its cheaper and I don’t feel like I am going to get mugged. Plus it has a black NATO strap, not that that isn’t easy enough to change.

I never wear my AP; too douchey.

Nice collection. The bracelet on the UN looks terrific, a definite upgrade over the rubber strap.

Thanks. I called UN and told them I was getting a rash from the strap and they sent the metal strap for free, which I thought was pretty cool. I actually like the look of the strap, though. I’ve been very impressed with UN overall – I’ve had that watch ever since the Blue Max came out and never had to service it.

When I am in the right town (NYC), I’ll post pictures of my cheapo black Rolex and the AP.
