“Shikasta” by Dorris Lessing. A strange twist to the creation story.
I just read the book Into Thin Air. It is an awesome book about the horrific 1996 expedition to Mount Everest.
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King was very interesting.
The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien-sets up the whole LOTR story.
The Stand by Stephen King was amazing.
Atlas Shrugged is the MOST IMPORTANT read of your life…the Fountainhead is up there too…
But if you want some fun check out the Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan
The Life of Pi - was out last year, the name of the author escapes me and I’ve lent my copy out so I can’t check.
“Angels and Demons” by Dan Brown. The author of “The Davinci Code”. Both excellent books that i found very hard to put down.
Ken.
“Infinite Jest” David Foster Wallace
“Foucault’s Pendulem” Umberto Eco
“Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy”
The Dark Tower Series by King
“The Rule of Four”
“Breakout - The Chosin Reservoir Campaign, Korea 1950” by Martin Russ. This is a tribute to the men of the 1st Marine Division and how 12,000 Marines and Army personnel fought their way out of an encirclement by more than 60,000 Chinese soldiers.

Godel, Escher, Bach, by Douglas Hofstadter is my favourite “make you think” book. Its main idea is consciousness through recursion and it looks at a range of topics in maths, computing, biology, music, art and philosophy. It’s also not as pretentious as it sounds! Very, very, very interesting if you’re at all interested in any of this stuff.
Good God! I never met anyone else who’s actually read this book.
You too must be a social outcast!

TC, have you read “Metamagical Themas?” It’s another book by Hofstrader–a collection of essays, actually–that has a more linguistic bent. Like you, I’m a lit guy, and I think this explains why I liked “Metamagical Themas” more than GEB. Check it out; I’m sure you’ll like it.
