Living with Anxiety

I have been on antidepressants since 18 which would make it now 15 years. I have been on many under the sun, from effexor to prozac to risperdal, welbutrin, prozac, blah blah. I also took Buspar for 6 months it is one of the few anti depressant / anti anxiety daily meds with little or no side effects.

One thing I have figured out after years of mental bullshit which included stints in mental facilities is you cannot take meds without therapy its like working out w/o worrying about nutrition. it just doesent work.

Also stay away from the NET, it will scare the shit out of you cuz all you hear is horror stories, but I am living proof it can get better and will get better. hang in ther bro.

I have dealt with anxiety for a while, most of the symptoms are wanting to hibernate/not attempt anything such as training or going to work. I can self medicate with alcohol, but obviously that really backfires most of the time.

What works for me:

SUN! Seriously, spend time laying in the sun for Vit. D/stimulated melatonin. The direct sunlight works much better than supplements. It’s immediately physically relaxing.

This is just me, but prolonged cardio such as a five mile run has always been much more effective at stimulating endorphins than lifting, and it’s easier because you can turn off your brain and just run without thinking, “Two more sets…” -there’s nothing to think about. Just breathing and running.

It’s different for different people, you might be the type that a heavy lifting day might relax more.
Take Vit. D, in relation to how much sun you get.
Superfood
Omega-3s
Vitamin B
Cayenne pepper capsules have an immediate warm, relaxing physical effect. I love cayenne.

I use all of the above in conjunction for good effect, sort of like an anti-anxiety stack.

I wonder if anxiety could be almost genetic, because I notice some people who just can’t relax no matter how much you tell them to, or try to calm them down. It’s almost like a programmed response.

The symptoms as you describe them above are more synonymous with depression more so than anxiety, though the two can definitely overlap. Just sayin`.

Well I’ve been through a barrage of tests and was diagnosed with GAD. The reason I don’t want to go to work is because I get anxious to the point of (in the past) having panic attacks in case of something bad happening, due to my mistakes. (I realize this sounds crazy and stupid but… yep it’s what happens.)

The social thing is related to if I feel “perfect,” like if I feel I have made a mistake that day, especially related to food/neglecting training, I don’t want to see people. YES I AM A CRAZY MESSED UP ARROGANT PERFECTIONIST AND I’M WORKING ON ITTTTT!!!

runs and hides

LOL…hey, if youre not at least a BIT of a nut job, chances are youre a pretty boring and uninspiring person <grinnin`>

In other words, you can come out of hiding now…you`re all right in my book

I would second the weed suggestion. I used to get really bad anxiety. I started blazing and it made it go away. Even after stopping I didnt get anxiety anymore.
He is in California so he might be able to find a doctor to actually give him a prescription for it so he wont need to do anything illegal.
If you have some money I would suggest a vaporizer though for 2 reasons

  1. easier on your lungs
  2. I actually find I dont get that tired feeling. It just calms me down but at the same time I’m very focused. Its the only way I will go out in public while high.

May I suggest this?

In some people that actually causes increased anxiety - so that might not be the best idea.

Got to get Sativa and not Indica strains.[/quote]

Wouldnt indica be better caus it would calm his body down, while sativa would make him “hyper aware” (i dont know about this in others, but i get more aware of my surroundings with a sativa) which is bad? Indica would relax him, which i think is better than having him all jumpy and shit.

Patrick Holford is a renowned nutritionist and has many brilliant book’s one of which is ‘Optimum Nutrition for the Mind’. It covers everything but with the emphasis on nutritional interventions over prescribed medications.

St. John Wort is a herbal remedy for anxiety and stress related disorders and has been found to be just as effective as prescribed medications without the side effetcs.

I agree with the posters who advise anything over prescription drugs.

Best of Luck with everything!

Big Mike,
I’ve been through it, man. In fact, posted quite a bit on the subject here in the past.

The second link turns into more of a training log at the end, but the first part has some really great discussion to help you out.

I know it seems impossible, but things will get better. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Big Mike, IK’m writing my answer based on this post. perhaps the lifting is stimulating something that is setting off your anxiety. You might have low levels of something and the lifting resultas in depletion of something or other. You might be low in minerals or perhaps your blood sugar, or certain hormones or something are borderline?

Or the blood being pumped is affecting your heart or amygdala or something. i think you know what i mean.
How about going to the doctor and getting a very detailed blood test to check the levels of the relevant thyroid, adrenals, etc, as many elements as you can. (Long time since i’ve had to do this, I’ ve forgotten what they’re all called).
next, go to a naturopath or lab and get a mineral analysis by getting your hair analysed. You can get your urine analysed too, it yields more detail than a blood test.

If you’re doing weights and THEN feeling anxious, you might be low in magnesium, for example.

Try the tests, if something is too low, get the relevant vitamins, and then check how you feel after a gym session.

If you can, perhaps get your blood/urine/hair tested, then go to the gym ,and test them immediately after your workout.

If this is not possible, log your sensations/feelings just before your workout, and then just after your workout. Even during your workout! An experienced doctor and naturopath will be able to spot the symptoms.
If you have serious depression issues needing medication, i can’t comment on that at all.
Good luck.

Ah, behind as usual. Great that you’ve licked the problem, BM!
