Lipid Panel

Just got my blood work back and I have 50 HDL, 124 LDL, 217 Total Cholesterol, and 215 Triglycerides. I am 25 and in pretty good shape. It should be noted I never do cardio. Should I be concerned?

No.

I am pretty sure you will die of something.

Well, ranges and values always help, but…

  1. HDL is OK, but not great. ATP-III Guidelines state that HDL-C above 59mg/dL can be considered a negative risk factor for heart disease.
  2. LDL isn’t awful, but not great. I’m throwing this out there knowing that all the high fat disciples will come in screaming about particle size, fluffiness and blah blah blah. Come at me, bros.
  3. TC isn’t awful, but not great. This is due to both 1 and 2.
  4. TG need to be addressed. Normal is <150.

Your results are not awful, but, while we shouldn’t have to amputate anything in the near future, you would do well to take some steps to address this.

You can read a little more on the test you had performed, along with some recommendations for your TG level, here:

Appreciate the info man. I decided to cut out milk and switch to egg whites. I drink a lotttttt of milk and I think that has something to do with my TG being high.

Have you been bulking? Lots of processed/fast foods? Body fat%? Have you put on significant size/weight?

Ya I mean over the past 6 years I’ve gone from 129 lbs at 6ft to 195 lbs. I do have some fat around the love handle area and I think I am around 12-14% BF.

No worries, man.

Did your physician not go over these results with you or was this a privately ordered test?

From what I’ve read the cholesterol that is in food does not get turned into the cholesterol we may clog our arteries with. We get our cholesterol from the fats we eat, so therefore there’s no need to worry about eating eggs or shellfish.

He reviewed them but did not go over them with me.

There is good and bad HDL (yes, some HDL is bad) and bad and neutral LDL. Total LDL and HDL mean little. Your triglycerides are a bit high, if you want to get those down, cut your carbs.

If you want to know if you are at risk, you need to get them to measure particle size.
