Lindsey Vonn To Compete in Downhill with Torn ACL

Lindsey Vonn will compete in Olympic downhill (possibly also super-g and combination) with torn ACL and bruised meniscus on her left knee. Crazy for sure but inspiring.

I do not see it as inspiring. She is an intense competitor with much international success. I see her not wanting to miss what is likely her last Olympics as a competitor

Intensley competitive And still in shape to do it at 41. You can call that inspirational.

I think it is incredibly inspiring. If she can ski downhill at age 41 after few years of retirement, one week after new injury still injured you are also capable of many things. Have a lot to learn? Bad equipment at work? Do not feel like going to gym/swim? Coming back after injury? Something bad happened to you? Well mostly likely you can do it and can rise again if Lindsey can do. You can also think of Lindsey in tough times as a motivation as she has fallen and raised many times.

I detest these comparisons. If you like them, good. If others find these types of comparisons inspiring to them, that too is fine.

IMO, the Joe normal has no idea the intense training and dedication and determination and never give up attitude that is coupled to phenomenal genetics. And Joe normal will never walk in the shoes of those like Lindsay Vonn.

I credit her “never give up” determination.

Great marketing move, she’ll make millions off of endorsements and story rights for her “inspiring story”.

As a 41 year old, I agree with you.

I’m glad Lindsey gets one more run. I’m sure she has worked her ass off for this and the risk is worth the reward to her.

I’m never going to choke out the Nemean Lion, but Heracles still inspires me.

Well to be fair Joe will never have the goal to compete in Olympic downhill that is harder than learning new language, finishing education etc.

That is true. However I doubt her move is for marketing or financial reasons.

Thats what it comes down to for me. I used to snowboard a fair bit and was pretty decent.

A comming of age realization that happened about my early 20’s was that I would not be going pro, and I should just chill with the destruction of my joints and connective tissues.

Now she’s 41 and has had a phenominal career. She can afford to go for it both financially and physically.

Best case scenario- she goes out on top and becomes a legend.

Worst case- She goes out very near the top and is still a legend.

Factor in that she loves the sport and is a fierce competitor and of course she’s going to go for it.

I like this guy.

I mean, I do get exposed to mild doses of thorium from time to time, so :man_shrugging:t2:. Maybe some day!

That didn’t go too good.

Took balls to give it a go.

I tore my acl in a dirt bike crash when I was 18. I waited 10 months to get surgery and continued to ride the entire time. Even with a brace and wraps, it would still give out at times. Its just not a stable joint and it affects your confidence.

Lindsay Vonn competing despite the pain reminds me of a Road House quote:

  • [Doc] Do you enjoy pain?
  • [Dalton] Pain don’t hurt.
  • [Doc] Most of my patients would disagree with you

Well it didn’t end well, however she was third on training in downhill with torn acl and did not give up until the end.

Was it smart? No. Inspiring? Yes. Worth it? Lindsey will have to tell.

If she were not a woman, no one would give a shit. Countless male athletes have played with torn tendons, ligaments, and broken bones. No one said it was inspiring. There was no widespread media coverage. This is all for attention. She got it, made her sponsors happy, and made money. Good for her.

I would bet that one of Lindsay’s core values is “No Regrets.”

Nonetheless, she is a highly regarded international Alpine snow skier.

Lindsey Vonn is famous for being one of the greatest American alpine skiers of all time, holding records for most World Cup wins (82) by a female skier, winning Olympic gold in downhill (2010), securing four World Cup overall titles, and earning multiple World Championship medals, known for her dominance in speed events like downhill and Super-G despite major injuries.

You can’t second guess reality like that. Thats why we have purple unicorn boy girls running around fighting cops.

She’s a hell of an athlete and competitor. That stands on its own merit.
