I’m a loafer every year since '99. My second favorite New England mountain behind Jay Peak.
It’s such a great mountain. I never got to ski Jay Peak, or anywhere outside Maine for that matter, for what reasons do you find it better than the loaf?
355 inches of annual snowfall (compared to 300 for Aspen and 206 for Sugarloaf) and incredible tree skiing.

Or…if you really like snow, 465 for Wolf Creek. No one who wants to ski actually goes to Aspen.
I would suggest running, or other intense cardio more then lifting for a beginner.
I have been skiing for 26 years of my 29 year life. I used to compete in moguls in high school and then coached the freestyle team while in collage for 5 years. squats and deads are the best for serious skiers. but more important is the cardio for completing the mogul course.
You will be falling a lot no matter what, so expect to be sore.
Also all those from texas, your just like skiers from NJ, New Jersey, aka the armpit of america. Hey Joey, Joey from Jersey with the jeans, and starter jacket. LOL

Hey, jeans will keep you plenty warm and dry, and look good too! LOL.
only dry when rocking the gators also. lol and a cig in your mouth.
“joey from Jersey”
Or i guess
“trevor from texas”
brant where are you going skiing?

Someone said something about jeans. Do NOT wear jeans, unless you wear sweat or windbreak pants over them. Every year a couple people wear jeans, you fall and they get wet and heavy, and start chafing in places you don’t want to be chafed. go with snow pants, or sweat pants with some waterproof material over them.
You’ll be sore no matter what. I agree with previous posters about backing off the heavy lifts prior to skiing. I would avoid anything that tightens up your hips and low back.
Try high rep wall squats or as stated previously, high rep front squats. Might be a good time to try Tabata if you haven’t before.

It was convenient to make my point.
I don’t have the luxury of that much snow out east and I can’t afford a west trip this year so I’ll just have to do with my Jay Peak.

Jay is awesome, except it’s always damn cold and windy on the lifts. But the tree skiing makes up for it. I grew up skiing at Whistler/Blackcomb/Mount Washington and I’m still not used to this east coast ice/cold conditions.
OP, can you ice skate, if so you’ll find skiing pretty easy. Just be sure to get some short skis and you’ll be fine. In addition to squatting, try some timed wall sits. It’s pretty close to the position you’ll be in the entire day of skiing.
I’ve been skiing for 16 years but I’ve never thought of weight training specifically for the sport of skiing.
I would go with high-rep squats followed by some isometric holds in the squat position.
I would throw in some eccentric squats if you have partners to help you lift the weight back up. At the US training facility in Park City, they have eccentric leg press machines and eccentric bikes. If you do have equipment like this, I would use it.

Actually I’m from Maine. I’ve been a skier just as long as you have. And I think I look pretty good on skis
but you might disagree.
Give the snooty attitude a rest.

Edit: Another reason skiing is so much fun is that you CAN have epically incredible crash-and-burns and due to the nature of the sport it’s usually pretty harmless. Unless you hit a tree and twist your spine like my dad did… but usually it’s cool.[/quote]
Or if you come off a large jump and land on a mogul. Popped my right leg out of the socket and bruised a lung. 11 months later I’m still recovering.

Gotta disagree, Aspen, Aspen Highlands, and Snowmass have some incredible skiing.
Granted, they are on the expensive side, but there are fewer posers there than the other major CO resorts.
I hadn’t been skiing in 10 years and went with my kids for the 1st time last year. I thought I’d be really sore after wards and look like I hadn’t skied in years. I found that the new ski’s they have today are a huge difference from the ones I grew up with. I had a great time never fell down once and never did get sore.
I can’t wait to get out there again this year!

Yeah, you don’t have to muscle 'em around like you used to.
I kinda miss it.
