Meet report
Saturday, got up early and hopped on the scale just to check where I was at, 218. Cool. Had a cup of coffee and hit the road. Picked up my buddy and made it to the venue at 8:15 for the 8:30 weigh ins. Weighed in at 217, felt good. Started hydrating a lot, and had a protein shake. A LOT of lifter wound up showing up today, around 100 they had said. Fuck…gunna be a long day.
Tech meeting went from about 10-1030, lifting started shortly after. The meet was held in a rec center, on one of the basketball courts. Luckily, the free weight area at this place had some decent equipment. I was in the 3rd squat flight (out of 5), and they were running 2 platforms-1 for squats and 1 for curls, until the curlers were done (about 30 of them-3 flights) then it became the bench platform. Took a while, a long while, but I finally started warming up for squat a little after noon. Felt great, depth was fine, turns out I was sinking the shit out of them. Perfect.
135x5x2
175x3
205x2x2
245x2/1
285x1x2
*Was taking forever before it got to our flight for some reason, so I wound up going back and hitting one more rep @ 275 to stay warm.
Then I was up.
140kg (308.5#)
150kg (330.5#)
160kg (352.5#) +12# PR attempt…
Like a boss. Deeper than they needed to be, but I’m ok with that. I’d really prefer to never get redlighted on depth again.
Benching didn’t take place until almost 5 hours later. Yes. That’s right. Squats took a while, and the 8 bench flights onnly going on one platform, plus a lot of lag time between the guys being ready to load the next weight on the bar and the announcer who couldn’t keep up with both platforms, led to a lot of guys getting really pissed off. Tried to relax, eat some, drink a lot, finally came my turn to start warming up.
135x5x2
185x3
205x3
225x2/1/1 just trying to stay warm
Then my attempts
No vids, since would-be camera guy was my handoff guy
115kg (253.5#) Good-easy
120kg (264.5#) Good-slowed a little just past the halfway point, but locked out fine.
125kg (275.5#) Failed-couldn’t lock it out. Came off the chest just fine, just couldn’t lock it out. Fuck. Someday I’ll go 3/3 on bench…
Then they rearranged some shit (I think because a lot of guys left at this point, as it was around 6pm) and I didn’t have a week before deadlifting, maybe 30-45 minutes.
Deadlift warmups went surprisingly well. After being here 10 hours, I thought I’d have been dead by now, but it wasn’t too bad. The end was in sight.
135x5 Felt like nothing
225x3 Again, nothing
272x2 Nope
315x2x2 Oh there’s the bar…
365x2 Good, second rep feeling heavier
390x1 Heavy, but not THAT bad
Time to hit it
190kg Opener (418.7lbs) Nailed it.
205kg (451.7lbs) Heavy at lockout, flew off the floor, got it. +10# meet PR. Very happy with this. Went to the table, asked what the state record was (I already knew) and they said 212.5kg (468.2#) and they said I could probably take a 1kg bump to have a shot at it. I asked for verification on this, since the last time they told me that they wound up changing it right before I hit the platform and needed to add more to it-and I failed it. So this time, it was OK. I could try 213.5kg for the 220# 30-34 age group AZ record.
Flew off the deck, surprised me in fact, but lockout took forever. Kept it moving, heard someone say “HIPS!” and it clicked. Pushed them through, locked it out. 3 whites. Fucking pumped. Very VERY happy with this. I’ve never set a record in anything, and I know it’s a small sub-class record but IDGAF. I set it, and will keep breaking that shit.
Lifting partner wound up pulling a 600# dead (@242), benched 402, and squatted 480. Saw a kid (20-24) do his first meet, and he wound up going 622/418/661 @ 275. Attempted a 705 pull and almost got it, couldn’t lock it out though. By far, the heaviest attempt I’ve seen at a meet yet, and I can’t wait to see what this guy does in the future.
Meet was over around 9:45pm, and I got home a little after midnight, exhausted. I know what I need to work on, and will do so to continue to improve. Planning on running 531 for a few cycles while prepping for the October 6th Tough Mudder, and then I’ll run Sheiko #32 to peak for a NASA meet the first week in November. Paused benching has worked as far as making the chest NOT a weak point right now, so now just gotta hammer the lockout, and I need more deadlift lockout work, as my off the floor speed is pretty solid. I think I could have ripped 500 to my knees, honestly. Lockout…Work It!
1088 Total, which is a +35# PR. SO close to 1100. Then 1200…1300…etc
Then yesterday, 6/24 I hit some floor pressing since my tris weren’t too sore
Rolling DB ext
25’s 12x3
Floor press
135x10x5 Paused first 2 sets
DB curls x12x3
Just to keep the blood moving, try and recover. Ate a ton at Chipotle last night, woke up today…218.
