I’ve seen your log title before but it didn’t really catch my attention until today because I’m waiting to have my 2nd MRI to clarify if my hip labrum is torn.

Forgive me for not reading all of your log to catch up but I’m curious about my potential future.

Do you have any restrictions now that you’re fixed up and have recovered from surgery?

Is there anything you avoid to keep from developing a problem again?

My understanding of my situation is that there’s a small deformity in my femur that causes impingement and over time can lead to a tear in the labrum. I’ll be 33 this month.

I’m also 33 and know how you feel. I think what caused my initial problem is that I had a bad fall off of an army obstacle course. Like a bonehead I walked it off. I was 21 at the time. For years I continued to get stronger with no pain. I started losing range of motion and had pain in my groin. I was diagnosed with fai/hip impingment, torn labrum and severe,osteoarthritis at 29 or 30. I eventually had to stop dl and sq as the pain was severe and my rom was awful.

After several surgeons said total hip replacement I found one awesome Dr who did hip resurfacing. It is a better alternative for athletes. Long story short today I squat and deadlift fine. My deadlift is about 90lbs,less than my best ever and my squat is about 130 less. I hope to get as strong as I used to be, but I’m just happy to train pain free.

Short runs and fine, but slower of course. The longest distance I have run non-stop is 1 mile, but I hate running. I have hiked 7 miles in one day which was cool. I walk 2 miles 3-4x a week.

I would make sure to get xray and MRI if you haven’t done so. Also, if it hurts don’t do it.

Thanks for the info. I’ve had one MRI and X-rays. The specialist thinks there’s a deformity on my femur and a tear in the labrum. He said an MRI with arthrogram would show a more clear picture so I’m headed back for that next Wed. They’ll jab a nice, big needle into my hip from the front and inject dye directly into the joint. It’s going to suck.

If that confirms the tear then I think we’ll be discussing surgery. A friend of mine just had the same problem and surgery by the same doctor and he’s recovering well. He’s not supposed to flex his hip past 90 degrees for 3 months. Sounds like a long recovery in terms of being able to train the way I like.

Recovery takes time. But, if you get surgery don’t be a fool and rush back. It takes time to regain ROM and strength. Good luck.
