i second that, sharp aquos have great colors and contrast imho.
Their full hd panels are top notch…

Wait for the New Sony XBR line to come out, or look at the Samsung LN46a650 and the LN46a750…Sony uses Samsungs panels, however, the sound quality is superior on the Sony…

And panasonic DOES NOT make a 120hz TV. There largest LCD is 37" anything greater in size, will be a Plasma if its a Panasonic.

It may be too small for you but I got the Panasonic
TX37LZD800 I find it difficult to fault, no make that almost impossible to fault. The slightest niggle is that the remote needs to be lined up with the centreline of the set when more than 15ft away. Put it this way: I’d by another!

I’m surprised there hasn’t been any mention of the Mitsubishi TV’s here?

Sharp aquos are power whores and WILL run your bill up compared to the samsungs and probably sonys.

I’d but aquos as second tier w/ toshiiba. I think sony and samsung are among the best available.

Love my Aquos, great picture. Mine’s only 720p, though, but I never have any trouble with the pic breaking up watching sports or fast movement. My buddy has a LG 1080 and that thing sucks for watching football, a real pain in the ass.

I would venture to say the Samsung A650 and 750 have the best LCD pictures available right now. The new XBR’s which won’t be out until this fall may be better, but they are guaranteed to be hundreds if not thousands more.

I work at Circuit City and the A650 is the first LCD I would actually consider to be on par, if not better than some plasmas, and that is saying alot.[/quote]

The new XBR’s will not be thousands more, I’ll get you guys a ballpark figure on Wednesday.

Wow, you know your stuff!

Mitsubishi’s makes the top of the line stuff, there 30’ model, LT3050 a few years ago, blew away the XBR in picture quality. I just don’t think the have the marketing as the bigger names out there…

WOW Strong hate on the LG’s.
I was thinking of buying a 50 inch LG plasma since my current 134cms rear prejection LG tv is still going great guns after 7 years.
They are nice and cheap compared to the Samsung’s over here.

Id love to get a LCD but im a fan of massive tv’s and the stores over here only stock 40-42 inch and below and cost a shitload more.

Did the OP post a budget??

Ok, folks - I have made my decision and taken delivery of a Sony KDL-46W4100. The KDL-46Z4100 and the XBR stuff were not worth the extra money to me, and the picture I saw in the store was on par with the other 46-inch-class sets there.

It was between this and the Samsung LN46A650. Most reviews put the Samsung as better overall than the Sony (and I’ll probably regret not going with the Samsung some day). But the main reason I went with the Sony was that I read many, many stories of negative experiences with Samsung customer service when something went wrong with the set. My luck is usually bad with purchases like this and I wanted to minimize my chances of having customer service problems.

CNET’s review of the KDL-46W4100 is somewhat less than glowing and they give it a 7.3. But, user ratings are in the high 8’s and low 9’s and some of the stuff that CNET criticizes don’t bother me a bit.

For example, they really slam the menu system as cumbersome. But, I really like it and thought it was intuitive pretty much right out of the box. They also criticize fluctuations in intensity of blacks across the screen and problems with skin tones that have to be adjusted out with the picture settings in the menus.

But all of these things can only be detected by hardcore video- and audophiles with fine electronic instruments. We’ll see how it goes. Maybe I’ll notice all this fluctuating backlight as I watch it more.

I was able to get it from Amazon for $1900 with free shipping and no sales tax. Most other places, both on-line and brick-and-mortar were $2200 to $2700, PLUS sales tax (anywhere from $175 to $220) PLUS shipping.

Thanks for the discussion and advice. Best of luck to anyone else buying a TV nowadays. I think it’s a pretty hard thing to do.
