Kudos for Cigars

I had a cigar this weekend. A really good one. It must have been good because I was higher than a kite and barfed about 10 minutes after finishing it.

did it have weed in it by any chance?

If you barfed for 10 minutes after smoking it, then it wasn’t a good one.

On the other hand, you don’t really smoke cigars, you taste them. I didn’t know the difference until somebody showed me.

I think it was nicotine overload. A friend of mine that is a cigar person told me the one I had was pretty mild too. A Monte Cristo Rothschilde. I was flying by the time I finished it.

Many cuban brands are considerably stronger than dominican’s, honduran’s and cigars from other countries and will make you barf if you are unnacustomed to them.

Oh yeah, don’t inhale.

Yeah, the Monte Cristo is a light one. Good though. If you inhaled like it was a cigarette, you definitely screwed yourself up. Don’t inhale into the lungs. As an example, if you were just taking a taste of a milkshake, you’d just bring the shake into your mouth and taste, then spit it out 'cause it doesn’t mix with your ultra-low-carb-whatever-diet. Anyway, you get the point. Cigars have many times the carcinogens that cigarettes do, so once again don’t inhale.

Some recommendations for a light introduction: Macanudo portofino, H. Uppmans, Punch Grand Cruz, some of the Baccarats.

Baccarrat’s are some of the best. I look for them first whenever I hit a cigar shop. Nice flavor and smooth smoke. However, I did have a genuine Cuban once, and I’ve never had better. I do agree with yorik and aragorn; you should smoke cigars for the flavor and don’t ever inhale.

Punch cigars from Honduras are quite mild, from Cuba they are quite strong. Cigar Aficionado rates them as one of the strongest, not that that magazine is the last word, but a good resource. Punch are my favourite smoke.

Er…

  1. Aren`t cigars just tobacco leaves with nothing else except the ring? I was under the impression that insurance companies gave leeway to cigar smokers precisely because there were no extras?

  2. Carcinogens? See point one. How could a plain vanilla tobacco leaf be worse than a cigarette containing tons of chemical compounds?

Then again, I`m no cigar expert…

Love the Punch cigars! They’ve been some of the best I’ve ever had.

But can’t forget the La Gloria Cubana, Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta, Montecristo, H. Upmann…aw hell there’s just too many good ones.

“Don’t inhale” is the best advice you’ll ever get.

La Aroma de Cuba is a great brand to give a try. They are pretty inexpensive but very tasty!

Other favorites of mine are:

San Luis Rey
Punch
Partagas
Padron
Romeo y Julieta

cmon man, what about arturo fuente

i like padron also

yeah you are right, a REAL CIGAR is just tobacco, the wrapper, binder, filler and all is tobacco, there are no chemicals of any sort put into a real hand rolled cigar. we are not discussing black and milds.

as for my preference in cigars, The entire line of CAO cigars i find lovely, the all time best is the CAO black but it was a limited run, it is the only cigar that has recieved perfect scores from every major cigar reviewer(besides the cuban Cohiba). but personaly i find cohibas, montecristos, and davidoffs to be overpriced for the flavours you recieve from these cigars, if you got the money to blow on these go for it, but otherwise go for CAO or Arturo Fuente(another line of my favs).

i also just started smoking Rocky Patels, i def recomend his vintage series(he also a very nice man).
if your going for bargain, quality, handrolled check out La Finca and/or Consuegra.

also if you guys arent inhaling your smoke then you arent truly enjoying the stick, you dont inhale the entire stogie but every so often you take a good amount of smoke against your palate blow half out and suck the rest down.

sorry for the rant, but cigars is like my familys pasttime, i’ve had pre-embargo cubans before, so old you HAD to wipe the plume off.

As someone else said, you are right, but it is kind of like comparing being shot with a rifle (cigar) and a shot gun (cigarette). One is a hell of a lot messier than the other, but the end result is pretty much the same. Cigars are still carcinogenic and can cause the same type of health problems as cigarettes.

That being said, I love the fact that I live in Australia and can walk down to my local tobacconist and buy a nice Cohiba Robusta from Cuba whenever I want.

hmmm… Macanudo hyde park, since i’ve only tried a couple of mac’ies (“R”,gold line and vintage '97)then you can expect a mild smoke, with a consistant burn and even ash, if your expecting a a strong, makes you wanna puke cigar this brand isnt the one for you.

bottom line… all the macs i’ve smoked are very good and i strongly doubt you will be disappinted… again unless its the wrong body for you.

edit@1250 : just got back from my local cigar shop, the hyde park if im not mistaken is the “size” 5.5x50 in the “R” series, if correct and same cigar your love it.

and for that i despise you.

I’m going to the Dominican Republic next week for spring break. Anyone know what the deal is with bringing cigars back into the US?

you can bring back 50 cigars for personal consumption.

cubans you can not only not bring in, but as of 2004 it is illegal for u.s. citizens to purchase or consume products of cuban origin -even when not on u.s. soil !

can you believe that shit ? even when not in the country ! punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or up to $250,000 fine. thanks gee w.

that shit pisses me off. but on the bright side i wasn’t too happy with the last batch of cubans i had anyways…all had some kind of rolling problems…those things are too frickn expensive to have that shit going on…davidoffs have never let me down however. but it’s not like i smoke a lot… maybe 25 a year.
