I just saw it this evening. I can’t share the above posts and give it a positive review.
This movie looked great. The effects were top notch, and it was worth the movie just for that alone. The acting was decent. Jack Black plays a convincing slimebag. Naomi Watts played a good role, a leading lady both tender and brave.
I really not care for the direction of this movie. It came across to me that Peter Jackson is in love with himself and thinks his own work is the best thing ever to hit the theatres. It seemed to me his is fishing for awards with overdramatic scenes.
A couple of things that really got me; the character Jimmy, what was up with him. “Jimmy, no.”, “Whatever happens, don’t take care of Jimmy.” And this guy was an adult, they treated him like a kid. Then, Jimmy’s mentor, the token black first mate, falls into the predicatble role. When he gets brave, you know he is going to die.
It is really hard for a remake to be done well. If the original story is stuck to closely (as in Kong), then the director gets accoused of not being original. If it gets varied and the director put’s his own twist on it, then
he gets accoused of bastardizing a classic. A succesful balance of the two makes for a good remake, and thought Kong lacked that balance.
