For those of you who’ve purchased one of the 2L nalgenes from this site . . .
How do you keep that fucker clean? Maybe it doesn’t get so bad if you’re using Biotest products in it (I use mine for whey/dextrose/maltodextrin from other companies, got the bottle from a friend), but I find that 99% of the time mine smells like old socks, and I can’t exactly get my hand in there to scrub around and clean it. Beyond immediately rinsing it after every usage and periodically shaking around some soap and water in there, what do you do?
The baby bottle brush is a huge help, as is not waiting when you’re done using it to fill with hot water and soap. I’ll usually wash it pretty well, then still leave it filled with hot water for a while just to soak before giving it a second series of rinses.
(I learned the hard way that it doesn’t go in the dishwasher -lol)
So I was having the same problem. I like to sip on water with crystal light throughout the day and even though I soaked it every night it would never come close to clean.
Squirt some washing up liquid inside and pour some water in
Shake. Then shake some more.
Pour the water out, put some clean water in.
Repeat 3&4 about 2-3 times
Put the bottle in the drying rack upside down
I leave my Nalgene in the rack until I have to use it again the next day. If I’m away for a couple of days I put the cap on, but only screw it on a tiny bit, allowing air flow.

The point was things like crystal light, waxy maize, dextrose etc leave behind residue that’s difficult to remove from the bottle with simple soap and water.

I was pretty fucking pissed to learn that my $30 water bottle is not dishwasher safe. I learned this after putting it in the dishwasher and having the thing come out looking like it’s 8 months pregnant.
They just use bleach to clean them in scientific laboratories. 10% solution. This is really simple. If it is bad, let is soak in it overnight. There is no better way.
