Kdjohn: Physical Philosophy & Iron Insights

Perhaps it is futile. However, I’m pig-headed enough to gun for it anyways.

I know, but the goof ball put the 10 min 2.5k as his toughest challenge at the moment.

It’s not futile. It sounds horrible, though. They are special forces.

This is because I have pacing issues over short distances. I’m 100% made for endurance work, but middle distance is a weird area for me. My worry is that I’ll gas out too quickly too early on the 2.5km, whereas I know I can naturally pace myself on the 5km.

Maybe you could knock out both in one run? Run the 5k and see what your time is half way.

That’s a great idea!

Tricep bar incline press (2020 tempo)

  • 2x12 @ 65
  • SS W/ tricep bar curls, 2x12 (2020 tempo)
  • 1x25 band incline press
  • 1x25 band curls

Notes:

  • Front squats were flying today. I initially went in not knowing what I wanted to do for this week’s “strength” portion (Volume & Strength has a few you can choose for the Anchor), but after the 5+ set I knew I had it in me for a PR, so I hit some Joker sets. Totally paid off. Got videos of the 5+ set and Joker below.
  • Coulda added more weight to the incline press. Even with a slow tempo and constant tension I wasn’t tapped out by the second set.

Just watched the front squat vids and both looked easy! I think getting out of breath was the limiting factor in the PR set because that bar was cruising til that last rep. I guess that answers my question on how you could hit a PR after that set.

The 275x3 was definitely easy, and it might be ballsy to say, but I probably could’ve ground out another 1 or 2. The next rep on the PR/5+ set would’ve been uuuuugly though; I could feel my upper body and core losing integrity, and didn’t want to risk anything for ego’s sake.

My leg strength far outpaces my upper body strength.

Bench

  • 135x5
  • 155x5
  • 180x15
  • 200x2
  • 220x2
  • 240x3 (PR)

Hang power snatch

  • 3x5 @ 95
  • SS W/ band dislocations, 3x10

45° back raises

  • 2x12 @ 45
  • SS W/ chins, 1x10; 1x8+2

Hanging leg raises

  • 2x15
  • SS W/ chins, 1x5; kneeling band pulldowns, 1x25

Notes:

  • More PRs! This time on bench, which is a notoriously poor lift for me. Once again, I probably had another rep or two on the Joker, but I was just so surprised I got 3 that I racked it. The 5+ set was definitely the end of the line; the 15th rep wasn’t pretty, as you’ll see in the videos below.

Start time: 2110
Garage temp: 5C

Power clean & jerk

  • 135x5
  • 155x5
  • 175x5
  • SS W/ band dislocations, 3x10

Squat

  • 5x5 @ 195
  • SS W/ sit-ups, 5x20 @ BW

Bench (3ct pause)

  • 5x5 @ 135

KB gorilla rows

  • 2x25/side @ 32kg (70)

Notes:

  • Work schedule got shifted around this week, so I had to do this after I got home. Ripped through it because I don’t like doing anything too strenuous after work.
  • Jerks felt heavier than they should’ve, but I suppose it’s to be expected after PRing bench the day before. Need to work on getting under the bar faster instead of trying to press up.
