Kdjohn: Physical Philosophy & Iron Insights

Have you ever checked EatWild or Craigslist?

Haven’t tried craigslist and I’ve never heard of eatwild, but will definitely check it out. Is it like a craigslist for meat or something?

I need to get some shit off my chest, and since no one else in my life “gets” this lifting thing, I’m gonna spew it all in my log. Because I can. And because T-Nation is like a safe space for me, I guess.

I’ve talked about it before, but I get crazy anxiety when it comes to training sometimes. When I was training and teaching martial arts, it was a non-issue, because combat was what I sunk all my thought into, while working out was just a secondary thing. However, now that I haven’t been training martial arts the last couple years, physical culture has taken the lead.

Most of this anxiety stems from one main concern: having crazy training ADD, jumping from one thing to the next, not making progress, then being ridiculed by my peers for fruitless efforts.

Another piece of anxiety is this… horrible negative attitude from the different branches of strength training. Powerlifters, bodybuilders, CrossFitters, kettlebell…ers? It just seems like everyone thinks their brand of training is the best way and subtle shade (sometimes not-so-subtle) gets thrown at the other branches. This is another reason I always jump ship: because I always feel like I’m doing the wrong type of training.

I’m just so fucking sick of it. I enjoy all physical pursuits; I like training it all. Barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, bodyweight, powerlifting, weightlifting, running, hiking, swimming — whatever, I just enjoy the process of training hard at ANYTHING and making myself stronger, faster, healthier and better as a human being.

So fuck the rest of physical culture. I like everything and I want to train everything. I don’t need to have a 5-plate deadlift, or squat 3x my BW, or do 100 chins in a row or any other number of arbitrary training “rules”.

In the spirit of this log’s name, and just as the wolverine has been known to fend of bigger predators, when the wolves and bears of the strength world try to come and put me down, I’m gonna stand up and say, “Fuck you”.

It’s a directory of farms organized by state. Of course, not every farm lists its information here. Nevertheless it’s very comprehensive. Though I have no idea where you live, I find it hard to believe that you wouldn’t be able to find at least one source near you. It’s worth checking out if you are interested. Local Harvest is a good source as well.

Oof, this hits home. I really need to limit my internet usage. Not reading training articles (or, trying to) definitely helps.

Need to try to stay in the training logs section only.

If you haven’t, Paul Kelso’s “Powerlifting Basics Texas Style” is worth reading, just to help reinforce the whole “we’re all just lifting weights” mentality. Shouldn’t have the disasterous effect of reading online training articles.

I totally dig the direction you’re going. Just do stuff because it’s worth doing. Jamie Lewis writes about that a lot as well. If you’re working hard and doing it frequently, you’re going to get results.

This was huge for my success with lifting. Highly recommended.

This applies to everything in life. It comes from people with very small self-worth, who contribute very little to the world at large. It’s no different than sports teams or politics. Just a way for people to feel superior based on something relatively arbitrary that does not make them superior. The further you can distance yourself from this kinda stuff, the happier and more confident you’ll be. Head down and onward march dude.

This was always my mentality with combat. I didn’t care where somebody came from in their martial arts history, we were all fighters, and I respected them for it. I got absolutely murked by a karate practitioner one day, which is an art people usually make fun of. He was so ferocious.

Somehow, I lost that mentality with weights. It makes me sad.

It’s annoying because, deep down, I know that I know this. I just get trapped in this cycle of seeing the criticism and second guessing everything, because the perfectionist in me assumes what I’m doing is “incorrect”. It’s stupid and I hate it.

Hear hear @kdjohn mate.

Just drown out the white noise man. There’s way too much stress in trying to get a good fucking workout under your belt nowadays so any more is a non starter.

Start time: didn’t check
Garage temp: -4C

Power clean + 1 jerk on first rep

  • 135x5
  • 150x5
  • 170x5
  • SS w/ band dislocations, 3x20

Front squat

  • 170x5
  • 190x5
  • 210x5
  • Back squats: 5x10 @ 205 + a bunch of Hise shrugs

Clean rows

  • 145x5
  • 170x5
  • 190x5

Barbell curls

  • 70x5
  • 80x5
  • 90x5

Kettlebell swings

  • 10 swings EMOM 5 min @ 32kg (70.5)

Notes:

  • Good session. That single jerk and the band dislocations really made my upper back and shoulders feel stable for the cleans and front squat.
  • I hate Boring But Big squats. So much. BUT, doing them got me the strongest I’ve ever been on squats, so I’m just trying to keep that in mind. The Hise shrugs helped keep my upper back tight, which was helpful.
  • So, I don’t know if “clean rows” are an actually thing (I certainly couldn’t find anything on the internet), but it’s basically just a Pendlay row, but from the clean starting position (lower hips, upright chest, etc etc). I really like them.

Start time: 1300
Garage temp: -1C

Double kettlebell clean + push press + front squat @ 32kg/32kg (70.5)

  • 1+2+1
  • 1+3+1
  • 1+5+1
  • 1+1+2
  • 1+1+3
  • 1+1+5
  • 2+1+1
  • 3+1+1
  • 5+1+1

Constant-tension close grip chins/push-ups, slow tempo

  • 3xAMRAP each

Hanging knee crunches

  • 2xAMRAP

Notes:

  • This session was very “tonic”. That kettlebell complex and progression was absolute money. Made me feel strong and stable but not fatigued. Love it.
  • The chins/push-ups were done with long breaks between — 2 minutes between chins and push-ups, then 2 minutes again between the push-ups and next set of chins. Even with such long breaks, because of the constant-tension and keeping everything upper body, I was so swollen. Just completely pumped with blood.
  • All in all, this was just want I needed. The combination of the “grease the groove” style with the kettlebells and the pump from the chins/push-ups, I feel great after the session.

@Frank_C thanks, buddy! Trying to get back to the roots of my training, doing what I used to do that I loved.

24/01/2021

Start time: 1330
Garage temp: didn’t check

Power snatch

  • worked up to 140x3

Back squat

  • 5x5 @ 230

Bench

  • worked up to 200x3

Snatch-grip straight-leg deadlift, 3010 tempo

  • 3x8 @ 200

Diamond push-ups, myo-reps

  • 25+5+5+5+5+5

Weighted sit-ups (plate behind head)

  • 3x15 @ BW+10

Notes:

  • Decided to (sort of) run Volume & Strength from Forever. Seemed like a good way to push the power versions of the O-lifts and powerlifts (minus deadlift) without slaughtering myself, and I can easily work it as a 2x/week thing.
  • Those snatch-grip SLDL were killer. The slow eccentric had me feeling them from my ankles all the way to my neck. Killer posterior chain exercise.
  • Weighted sit-ups highlighted the fact that my abs are exceptionally weak. Aside from main work, abs are going to be the most prioritized exercise. Can’t let my core get weak.

Had to do a post about the food I prepped this week, inspired by Powerlifting Basics, Texas Style.

There’s a dish in the book I really wanted to try because it A) sounded super easy and B) super delicious. It was a “casserole” of corn, peppers and onions with cheese and olives on top. I changed it up slightly; I mixed corn, green and red bell peppers, fresh jalapeño, onion, beans, habanero jack cheese, and a little salsa. Mixed it all up, baked it for about 20 minutes at 350°, then put the rest of the cheese on top and turned the broiler on until the cheese start getting crisp on the edges. Super easy.

Had it with some BBQ pulled pork on blue corn tortillas and OH MY GAAAAAWD, it’s amazing. I have died and gone to heaven.

Tagging @T3hPwnisher because you wanted me to let you know when I made anything. Also @flappinit because it seems like the kinda thing you’d dig.

I have so much transcendental envy right now, because that sounds phenomenal. Outstanding work dude! A fitting tribute to the spirit of Paul as well. Now use that fuel to crush some lifts!

If you can find the space in your diet to make it sometime, do so.

Plenty of diet space: lack of alone time prohibits food experiments unfortunately. One day though…

Thanks dude, I can definitely see myself making this soon. Possibly with some shredded chuck in the insta pot instead of the pulled pork. This might be heresy to some, but while I really like pulled pork, I just can’t eat a lot of it. Fills me up quick and I can’t shovel it down like I can beef.
